- United States Gato class submarine: Kuroshio was launched on August 15, 1955 and deleted on March 31, 1966. The first submarine of Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force.
- Oyashio class submarine class (old): A single unit that was first launched on May 25, 1959 and deleted on September 30, 1976. The first indigenous submarine of Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. Displacement was at 1139 t when surfaced and 1420t when submerged, and armament was 4 533 mm bow torpedo tubes. Complement was 65.
