This is a list of countries that declared themselves socialist, or are socialist by their constitution.
Such countries usually use the term "building socialism" to describe the transition to centrally-planned economy, the removal of the gap between rich and poor and creation of equality between its citizens.
This is a list of countries that declared themselves to be socialist, they may not actually be so.
