• Herald of Free Enterprise ( United Kingdom): Passenger ferry sunk in the North Sea off Zeebrugge, Belgium after taking on water and capsizing; the bow doors of the so called ro-ro (roll-on roll-off) ferry were subsequently discovered to have been partially open. 193 fatalities.

• Doña Paz ( Philippines): Passenger ferry sunk in the Tablas Strait in the Philippines after colliding with the oil tanker Vector.
