List of regional railway stations in Victoria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of the currently operating Victorian regional railway stations. The stations make up 7 radial train lines, which all operate out of Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, Australia, with 2 further lines proposed to be reopened to Vline passenger rail services.

Four lines previously closed to passenger services - those to Ararat, Bairnsdale, Leongatha and Mildura were proposed to be refurbished as part of the Linking Victoria project. While all were expected to reopen during 2004, the two larger projects, Leongatha and Mildura, have been delayed due to their funding being redirected to cover cost blowouts on the Ararat and Bairnsdale lines, both of which have now been reopened to passenger service.

Stations listed in bold are terminus stations. Some trains will be timetabled to terminate before the end of the line, although on some lines all trains will terminate at the last station at all times.

[edit] Albury-Wodonga line

The Albury-Wodonga line is the only broad gauge line operated by V/Line to cross the border into New South Wales, with the primary terminus being located in the New South Wales town of Albury

[edit] Stations on the line

The line continues on from the Broadmeadows suburban line at Broadmeadows.

From Southern Cross to Craigieburn stations, the line is covered by Metcard ticketing.

[edit] Ararat line

The line from Southern Cross to Ballarat has been recently partially upgraded under the Regional Fast Rail project, although some sections retain timber sleepers.

The Ballarat - Ararat section of the line was closed from 1994 until 10 July 2004, when it was reopened for a twice-daily service as part of the Linking Victoria Project. Services have recently been altered to thrice-daily.

Passenger Services may be extended north-west to Mildura under the Linking Victoria Project (though if North Geelong to Mildura rail line is converted from Broad Gauge to Standard Gauge, services between Melbourne and Mildura will not be able to travel via Bacchus Marsh, and will instead involve either a change of train at Ballarat or a less direct trip via Brooklyn-North Geelong C box-Gheringhap). However, the current Labor government has only allocated $53 million for freight rail trackwork on the Ballarat to Mildura section, and the promise of passenger trains to Mildura seems as far away as ever.

[edit] Stations on the line

The line braches from the Sydenham suburban line at Sunshine.

From Southern Cross to Melton stations, the line is covered by Metcard ticketing.

[edit] Bairnsdale line

The line from Southern Cross to Traralgon has been recently partially upgraded under the Regional Fast Rail project. Only one track between Pakenham and Bunyip, and between Longwarry and Moe, was upgraded: the other track, the north line, retains its old rails and timber sleepers. The RFR project ran $839 million plus over its original $80 million budget, due to the State government's inability to determine what it scope of works it required.

The section between Sale and Bairnsdale was closed from August 1993 to May 2004, when it was reopened to cater for log trains. A twice-daily passenger service on the reopened section resumed on May 3, 2004 as part of the Linking Victoria Project.

The line continues on from the Pakenham suburban line at Pakenham.

[edit] Echuca line

The line from Southern Cross to Bendigo has been recently partially upgraded under the Regional Fast Rail project. The section of track between Kyneton and Bendigo was reduced from double to single track as part of the RFR project, which thus far is $839 million over its original $80 million budget.

The Echuca line from Bendigo to Echuca was closed on 19 December 2004 and reopened on 3 September 2006 due to the upgrade of that section of track.

From Southern Cross to Sunbury stations, the line is covered by Metcard ticketing.

[edit] Warrnambool line

From mid 1993 to August 31, 2004, the Warrnambool service was operated by the now-defunct West Coast Railway. Starting September 2004, all services are now run by V/Line, partially using former West Coast Railway carriages & locomotives.

[edit] Stations on the line

The line continues on from the Werribee suburban line at Werribee.

This trains also connect with a coach service to Point Fairy and Mount Gambier.

[edit] Passenger lines proposed to be reopened

The following three lines, whilst closed to passenger rail at present are proposed to be reopened to passenger services in the future. The Mildura line is currently open to freight; while an upgrade to the line was announced in 2006, this is limited to improving the current slow 40kmh maximum speed on many sections, and is not relevant to any hopes that a passenger train service might recommence. The Leongatha line remains partly open with electric passenger services running Melbourne to Cranbourne, and with the South Gippsland Tourist Railway running tourist servcies between Korumburra and Leongatha, but closed to all rail traffic from Cranbourne to Korumburra. The Nyora to Korumburra tourist railway section may shortly reopen.

[edit] Mildura line

The line branches from the Ararat line at Ballarat.

[edit] Leongatha line

The line continues on from the Cranbourne line at Cranbourne.

Note: The South Gippsland Tourist Railway currently run tourist trains between Korumburra and Leongatha, and may shortly recommence tourist trains between Nyora and Korumburra.
