Nepal's constitution of 1990 provides for a multi-party system. However, in 2005 the king of Nepal "put aside" the constitution and assumed all significant government powers, ostensibly in response to a threat by Maoist insurgents. Since 1999, there have been no elections, and activities of political parties are currently repressed by the state forces.
