  • Granville Woods (1856 – 1910), an inventor. Woods was born in Columbus and spent his early childhood there.
  • Howard Dwight Smith (1886 – 1958), an architect. Smith graduated from the Ohio State University in 1907. He began the design and construction of Ohio Stadium in 1917, and during this project was a professor of architecture at OSU from 1918 to 1921. Smith was then chief architect for the Columbus Public Schools, then returned to OSU as University Architect 1929 to 1956.
  • Warner Baxter (1889 – 1951), an actor. Baxter was born in Columbus and lived there until age nine.
  • Elsie Janis (1889 – 1956), a vaudeville performer, screenwriter, actress and composer. Janis was born and raised in Columbus and maintained a home there, even while travelling for her career, until 1932.
  • Eddie Rickenbacker (1890 – 1973), a decorated World War I fighter pilot and airline owner and executive. Rickenbacker was born and raised in Columbus.
  • Grace Cunard (1893 – 1967), an actress, screenwriter, and film director. Cunard was born in Columbus.
  • James Thurber (1894 – 1961), a humorist and cartoonist. Thurber was born and raised in Columbus, and many of his short stories depict episodes from this period of his life.
  • Prescott Bush (1895 – 1972), a U.S. Senator, executive banker, the father of the 41st President of the United States and grandfather of the 43rd President. Bush was born in Columbus and spent his childhood there until 1908. He moved back to Columbus for part of 1923 for a job in business.

  • Curtis LeMay (1906 - 1990), a U.S. Air Force general and one-time candidate for Vice President of the United States. LeMay was born and raised in Columbus, and studied civil engineering at the Ohio State University.
  • Tom Poston (1921 – ), an actor. Poston was born in Columbus and lived there until he attended college.
  • Majel Barrett (1932 – ), an actress. Barrett was born in Columbus.
  • Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1935 - 1977), jazz musician. Kirk was born and raised in Columbus, and educated at the Ohio School For The Blind.
  • Jack Nicklaus (1940 – ), a professional golfer. Nicklaus was born in Columbus, and attended the Ohio State University. He won the 1961 NCAA Championship while playing for the school.
  • Phil Ochs(1940 - 1976), a singer and musician. Ochs spent part of his childhood in the city, which provided the inspiration for his song "Boy in Ohio."
  • Jack Hanna (1947 – ), a zookeeper. Hanna was director of the Columbus Zoo (in neighboring Powell) from 1978 until 1993, and Director Emeritus afterwards.
  • Beverly D'Angelo (1951 – ), an actress. D'Angelo was born and raised in Columbus.
  • Aminah Robinson (1940 – ), internationally renowned artist. Life long Columbus resident.
  • Christopher Ries (1952 – ), a sculptor. Ries was born in Columbus and attended the Ohio State University.
  • Archie Griffin (1953 – ), a football player. Griffin attended the Ohio State University and won the Heisman Trophy twice as a player for the OSU Buckeyes. He returned to Columbus after his pro career to become the university's assistant athletic director, and president of its alumni association.
  • Bob Orr (1953 - ), a television reporter and anchor at WBNS-TV, the Columbus CBS affiliate, between 1978-85 and 1988-93. Orr then became a correspondent for CBS News in Washington, DC.
  • Michael Feinstein (1956 – ), a singer and pianist. Feinstein was born in Columbus and lived there until age 19.
  • Dwight Yoakam (1956 – ), a country music musician. Yoakam was raised in Columbus and briefly attended the Ohio State University before dropping out.
  • Dana Tyler (1958 - ), a television news anchor. Tyler began her career at WBNS-TV, the Columbus CBS affiliate, before moving to WCBS-TV in New York City in 1990.
  • Richard Biggs (1960 – 2004), an actor. Biggs was born in Columbus.
