List of maps used in Red vs. Blue
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of maps used in the filming of the machinima series Red vs. Blue. As in most machinima, the maps of the games are used as sets, often in contexts different from those of the actual game and its storyline. These maps are listed in order of first appearance in Red vs. Blue.

[edit] Main storyline
These maps are primarily used in the actual Red vs. Blue storyline, though they may be used in special episodes for various purposes, as noted.
[edit] Blood Gulch
-
- Game: Halo: Combat Evolved
- Videos: Trailer, 0–39, 41, 42, 50–52, 74, PSAs 1-10, Specials 1-5, 7, St. Patrick's Day, Flag Day, Lost Campaign Ads, Go For Launch, Computer Gaming World video, Barenaked Ladies videos, PAX, Electronic Gaming Monthly videos, episode 28.5
Blood Gulch is a box canyon that serves as the main setting for the series for most of the first two seasons, and the start of the third. It is one of many bases for both the Red and Blue Armies. According to Simmons, the only reason that either team had built a base there is that the other team was building one. It is never revealed how long either base has existed, but Church's time travel reveals that they had been there for at least a couple of weeks prior to the events of episode 1. The map has also been used in later episodes for flashback scenes, and during Church's time travelling in season 3. Grif mentions during season 4 that both he and Simmons had been stationed at Blood Gulch for three years, and it is thus assumed Sarge too.
Outside of the main storyline, Blood Gulch is typically implied in PSAs as a set where the supposed actors of Red vs. Blue talk to the audience about special subjects.
[edit] Silent Cartographer
-
- Game: Halo: Combat Evolved
- Video: 9
The cut scene from the beginning of the Silent Cartographer campaign (single-player) map is used to show Sarge returning to Blood Gulch after meeting with Red Command. As the Pelican in the shot are flying over water, it may be assumed that Blood Gulch is surrounded by large amounts of water on at least one side.
[edit] Pillar of Autumn
The cut scene from the beginning of the Pillar of Autumn campaign map, the first map in Halo, is used to show the animation for Vic, the communications officer who is the liaison between Blood Gulch and Blue Command. The same scene is used for animation of Vic Jr., Vic's distant descendant. Also, a cut scene from the cryogenics laboratory is used in one episode for a flashback showing the implantion of Omega into Tex.
This map is the only Halo: Combat Evolved map to have been used to portray events in the future.
[edit] Sidewinder
-
- Game: Halo: Combat Evolved
- Videos: 10, 38, 39, 41–43, 52, EGM video: Point/Counterpoint: Celebrating the Holidays
An extremely cold planet made entirely out of ice, Sidewinder is the former location of another set of Red and Blue bases. It is also where Church was stationed before he was transferred to Blood Gulch. In a flashback, Tex is seen killing all the members of the Sidewinder Blue Team, except for Church, who is subsequently transferred to Blood Gulch before the start of the series. Despite the annihilation of the Sidewinder Blues, the Red Team remains stationed there, and captures Church and Grif when they teleport there in pursuit of O'Malley, Doc, and Lopez at the end of season 2. Wyoming later eliminates the entire Red Team in season 3.
Burnie Burns notes on the season 1 DVD audio commentary that Sidewinder was introduced in response to fans' questions as to whether the series would ever use a map other than Blood Gulch for filming.
[edit] Hang 'Em High
Hang 'Em High is used to represent the inside of Caboose's mind, in which Church and Tex find themselves after their ghosts possess Caboose in an attempt to kill O'Malley. It is inhabited by Caboose's inaccurate mental images of the Blood Gulch soldiers.
[edit] Battle Creek
-
- Game: Halo: Combat Evolved
- Videos: 38–40
Battle Creek is the initial home of a group of eternally respawning Reds and Blues who parody stereotypical Halo gamers. Sarge and Caboose are sent here near the end of season 2, when the Reds' teleporter malfunctions.
[edit] Chiron TL34
-
- Game: Halo: Combat Evolved
- Videos: 38–42
Chiron TL34 is depicted as a maze of teleporters. Simmons, who speculates that this area could be a janitors' closet, is teleported here at the end of season 2 while trying to pursue O'Malley, Doc, and Lopez. In the original Halo, this map is supposed to be a training facility for the SPARTAN II project.
[edit] Longest
-
- Game: Halo: Combat Evolved
- Video: 40
Longest is used to depict a Red Base in which Wyoming first appears.
[edit] Burial Mounds
Burial Mounds is used as the wasteland in which the Reds, Tucker, and Caboose find themselves after being blasted to the future; according to the season 3 DVD commentary, it is suggested that this is the Sidewinder in the future, after the snow has melted. To the Alien, it is known as "Great Burning Plains of Honka Hill", and is the first location through which the members of the sacred quest team need to travel. At one point, it had been home to at least one cow-like creature prophesied as part of the sacred quest, but that creature had already been killed by the time that the quest team arrives.
[edit] Zanzibar
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Videos: 44–50, 52–66, Total Request Live video
Zanzibar is used for the seaside fortress initially found by O'Malley and Doc in the future and is the future version of the map in which Church finds Gary in the past. The Great Weapon is initially located just outside the fortress, which locks down automatically and immediately when Tucker first brings the sword inside.
In a special video broadcast on MTV, Church convinces Tucker and Caboose into believing that the shore of Zanzibar is, in fact, Laguna Beach, in order for them to leave in search of reality television stars.
[edit] Coagulation
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Videos: 57–82, PSAs 11, 13, 14, Specials 6, 9, 10, Custom Videos, Bungie videos, Total Request Live video
Coagulation is represented as the future version of Blood Gulch. While the area has changed somewhat in the 800 years between the present and the future, the layout of the land is mostly the same. Sheila, left behind in the canyon because she is hard-wired into the tank, has made improvements to the Blue Base (modifications to the Red Base are shown but have no stated creator); Simmons, however, expresses doubts as to whether she could have done this without arms.
As with Blood Gulch, Coagulation outside of the main storyline serves as a set the supposed actors of Red vs. Blue use to film PSAs.
[edit] Backwash
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: 68
Backwash is used to film the swamp where the quest team stops at to rest, and where Tex manages to catch up with the group. When the Alien describes the "Great Burning Plains" and the "Great Freezing Plains" prior to the quest, Caboose somewhat accurately guesses the presence of "some pretty wet plains in between".
[edit] Containment
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Videos: 69–71, PSA 12, Special 8, Red vs. Blue: Out of Mind Part One
Containment is a snowy landscape that contains a fortress, depicted as a temple, guarded by the Battle Creek soldiers, who appear to hold a sort of uneasy truce. The Alien calls this location "The Great Freezing Plains of Blarganthia". The temple also houses an alien spacecraft behind a gate that Tucker's sword can unlock, as well as a concealed chamber in which Wyoming stored a jeep vehicle.
In a PSA about the 2006 Winter Olympics, Containment's slanted outside fortress walls served as a brief course for the "Rocket Luge" event, organized by Sarge. It is also used as the non-canonical base of the Reds when the Blues steal their flag in Special 8.
[edit] Relic
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Videos: 73, Out of Mind Part Two, Part Four, Part Five
Relic is used for O'Malley's secret lair in the future, to which he apparently flees after his defeat at his former fortress. While O'Malley has managed to store a large number of doomsday devices inside the base, he does not have an answering machine. The top of the base is only accessible from a teleporter located underneath, accessible by using a holographic lock.
[edit] Waterworks
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Videos: Episodes 81, 84
A dark hidden cave, found underneath the floor of Coagulation. It is revealed in episode 81 that Donut fell through the roof of the cavern after the ship crash landed on top of him.
[edit] Other videos
These maps have only been used outside the main storyline, in other videos, their events usually non-canon, or used in the miniseries Red vs. Blue: Out of Mind.
[edit] Ascension
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Special 7, Out of Mind Part Two
Seen first in Special 7, Church and Simmons flashback to the rocky terrain of Ascension in arguing what caused their defeat in a multiplayer match against Bungie Studios. In the miniseries Out of Mind, Tex is seen escaping from a base located on Ascension she blows up a whole squad of soldiers, before jumping off a ledge into the clouds below.
[edit] Warlock
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Special 8
While searching for their car, Church and Tucker walk through a dark, multi-level, color-coded parking garage, represented by Warlock.
[edit] Sanctuary
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Videos: Special 8, Custom Videos
Sanctuary has served twice as a setting for the series, once as Church and Tucker searched for their car, and another as a background while Tucker asked viewers to consider better personal hygiene. In comparison with Blood Gulch, the Blue base is surrounded by lush scenery and a majestic waterfall leading into a calm pond, leading Tucker to suggest it as perfect bait once the Red team would run out of water at their base. A small pond is also held within a small structure where Tucker gives his hygiene advice, the water fed by various currents running through the walls.
[edit] Turf
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Special 8, Out of Mind Part Three
Church and Tucker finish their journey to find their car in Turf, an urban street on which they parked. Tucker notes a yogurt shop on the street, but is not allowed to enter because it's closed and Church is unwilling to break in just to get Tucker free yogurt.
In Out of Mind Part Three, Tex finds an acquaintance named York attempting to break into a shop close to the one Tucker had pointed out.
[edit] Headlong
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Custom Videos
The urban cityscape of Headlong serves as a backdrop when Church gave a generic wedding proposal for viewers to personally use. Most noticeable of the setting is the large "Welcome to New Mombasa" featured behind Church.
[edit] Ivory Tower
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Custom Videos
While holding an intervention for any viewers requiring one, the characters are seen standing in front of a drab window in Ivory Tower.
[edit] Elongation
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Custom Videos
While conducting a public relations video, Grif is seen standing in front of the crate-transporting conveyer belts of Elongation, giving the impression of a warehouse or factory.
[edit] Foundation
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Videos: Out of Mind Part Two, Part Three
Seen in the Out of Mind miniseries, Foundation is depicted as both a Special forces Training Facility in which Tex, Wyoming, Church and Jimmy all trained (the former two also having their artificial intelligences (AI) inplanted here), as well as York's apartment.
[edit] Colossus
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Out of Mind Part Two
During the AI removal process as a result of the disastrous experiments at the Training Facility, soldiers are seen lining up to have a machine separate the programs from the soldiers.
[edit] Terminal
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Out of Mind Part Two
Tex is seen escaping from the AI removal process, running past a guard and shooting him down.
[edit] Lockout
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Out of Mind Part Two
The green-lit hallway found on Lockout is shown as another hallway Tex runs through to escape the Facility.
[edit] Outskirts
-
- Game: Halo 2
- Video: Out of Mind Part Three
As part of a large city shown as comprising parts of this single-player campaign map as well as sections of Turf, Outskirts is implied to hold a Commercial District (where York is seen breaking into a store), as well as the outside of York's apartment.
