List of mainstream films with unsimulated sex

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The depiction of sexuality in mainstream cinema was at one time restricted by law and self-imposed industry standards. Films showing explicit sexual activity were, with very rare exceptions, confined to privately-distributed underground films or "porn loops". Beginning in the 1960s, however, mainstream cinema began pushing boundaries in terms of what is allowed on screen. Although the vast majority of sexual situations depicted in mainstream cinema are simulated, on rare occasions filmmakers have produced motion pictures in which actors were allowed (or instructed) to engage in some level of genuine sexual activity, up to and including sexual intercourse. The difference between these films and pornography is that, while such scenes might be considered pornographic, the main intent of these films is usually not pornographic. Despite this, the release of such films (recent examples include Vincent Gallo's The Brown Bunny and Michael Winterbottom's 9 Songs) have often been accompanied by controversy; many of these films have only been released in their uncensored form on home video and DVD, while the scenes in question are usually made widely available (legally or usually otherwise) through the Internet.

[edit] Films with rumored sexual activity

Some information in this section has not been verified and may not be reliable.

In addition to the above, a number of mainstream films have become notable for claims and rumors that actual sexual activity occurred during filming, even if actual penetration, etc. was not visible on screen. This can also include alleged sexual activity that does not necessarily involve penetration. The rumors listed in this section have been referenced in the media.

Examples of this include:

  • Boxcar Bertha (1972) - this low-budget crime film directed by Martin Scorsese features a short (and heavily-edited in every form) scene of intercourse in a moving train between Barbara Hershey and David Carradine. Though nothing is shown due to its editing, Hershey and Carradine have always maintained that the coitus was real and rumours persist that lost footage would substantiate their claim. Scorsese declines to talk about the scene.
  • Don't Look Now (1973) - contains one, long rumored, unsimulated love scene between Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, but never confirmed or denied.
  • Tattoo (1981) - love scene between Bruce Dern and Maud Adams.
  • Bolero - the final love scene was reported to have been unsimulated.
  • 37°2 le matin (a.k.a. Betty Blue) - uncut version of the film opens with a lengthy, single-take love scene between Beatrice Dalle and Jean Hugues-Anglade which is so realistic it is considered by many reviewers to have been unsimulated.
  • Wild Orchid (1990) - widely reported to have shown Mickey Rourke and then-lover Carre Otis having intercourse during the film's major love scene (uncut version only).
  • Basic Instinct (1992) - some of the explicit scenes involving Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone led to widespread but ultimately unconfirmed rumors that some of the action was unsimulated.
  • The Lover (1992) - media-based rumors at the time of the film's release suggested that at least one of the love scenes between Jane March and Tony Leung was unsimulated, however all parties involved deny this.
  • Play Time (1994) - Monique Parent and Jennifer Burton masturbate together in one scene. Parent has claimed that this scene was unsimulated.
  • The Funeral (1996) - The sex scene involving Amber Smith was reported to be unsimulated by Playboy magazine when they featured photos of the actress in a 1997 issue. No penetration is actually shown in the scene.
  • The Key to Sex (1998) - Appears to show Maria Ford engaging in unsimulated cunnilingus in one scene, but it's difficult to tell for certain due to the camera angle.
  • Singapore Sling (2000) - Widely rumored to include unsimulated intercourse between Shannon Tweed and a male actor; this viewpoint is supported by screen captures of the scene in question that some claim appear to show penetration.
  • Scarlet Diva (2000) - the star Asia Argento's sex scenes with a film crewperson Jeff Alexander and co-star Jean Shephard were rumored to be unsimulated, as well as an explicit sex scene between Vera Gemma and Alessandro Villari.
  • Monster's Ball (2001) - in the "unrated director's cut" DVD of this film, one brief shot in its famous love scene between Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton strongly indicates that the intercourse is unsimulated.
  • The Model Solution (2002) - lead actress Holly Hollywood allegedly masturbates to an unsimulated climax (claimed by the actress in an interview about the film).
  • Havoc (2004) - lead actress Anne Hathaway (actress) is rumored to have actually performed fellatio on co-star Mike Vogel. This information came from The Howard Stern Show when a grip who worked on the film said he "saw Mike's penis go into Anne's mouth" during the convertible blowjob scene.

[edit] Films showing unsimulated object penetration

Another variation on this theme are mainstream films in which digital or object penetration of a vagina is shown. Several of the films listed above such as Romance show this act in addition to the other unsimulated content. Films that also show some sort of penetration (as the maximum explicit content) include:

  • Emmanuelle (1974) - in the first film in this long-running series, a dancer is shown inserting a cigarette into her vagina and then blowing smoke out of it.
  • Immoral Tales (1974) - Marie Forså inserts a pearl in her vagina.
  • Wild Orchid II: Two Shades of Blue (1992) - in the uncut version of this film, a vibrator is shown inserted into a woman's vagina during one sequence.
  • L'uomo che guarda (1994), English title, The Voyeur - actress Cristina Garavaglia inserts a cigar into her vagina in this Tinto Brass-directed film.
  • Requiem for a Dream (2000) - In the director's cut version of the film, two actresses are shown inserting a single double-headed dildo during a party scene. One of the actresses is performing as a body double for Jennifer Connelly in this Academy Award-nominated film. (It is often erroneously reported that Connelly performed the scene herself.)
  • Trasgredire (2000) - numerous scenes featuring lead actress Yuliya Mayarchuk masturbating in this Tinto Brass film.
  • The Center of the World (2001) - during a strip club sequence, porn star Alisha Klass, playing a dancer, inserts a lollypop into her vagina.

[edit] Films showing other unsimulated sexual activity

This category is for films that show sexual detail uncommon in mainstream films, but not necessarily to the explicit extent of the above. For the most part, this is the maximum extent of sexual explicitness for these films.

[edit] Pornographic films reedited as mainstream releases

Some information in this section has not been verified and may not be reliable.
Please check for any inaccuracies, and modify and cite sources as needed.

Prior to the advent of home video, a number of hardcore pornography films were released to mainstream cinemas. In most cases, scenes of penetration were either cut out or replaced with alternate shots. One exception to this was Deep Throat, which was released uncensored.

Examples of this type of hybrid release include:

  • Deep Throat (1972) - generally released uncensored
  • Alice in Wonderland (1976) - available in an R-rated version
  • Café Flesh (1982) - R-rated version of this science fiction porn film was released to mainstream cinemas
  • Dixie Ray, Hollywood Star (1983) - reissued in R-rated form as It's Called Murder, Baby.
  • Night Trips (1989) - was actually exhibited at several notable film festivals

[edit] Television series with unsimulated sexual activity

Unsimulated sexual activity is occasionally depicted on television programs. The rise of specialty cable networks in the 1980s resulted in a number of sexually explicit made-for-cable programs. The following list only includes programming made for non-pornographic broadcasters and therefore does not include programs such as Night Calls and 7 Lives Exposed (Playboy Channel productions with unsimulated sexual activity).

  • Family Business, a Showtime reality series about a porn film producer, features footage of actual sexual acts, although scenes of penetration have been edited out.
  • Sin Cities, a British travel series, often included scenes showing people (including, occasionally, the show's hosts) engaged in actual sexual activity. As with Family Business, actual penetration is not shown.
  • Big Brother. Numerous contestants on European and South American editions of this reality-cum-game show have been caught on tape engaged in intercourse; in some countries this footage was only viewable on the Internet, while in other regions it has been broadcast, leading to viewer complaints. In the 2006 series of the Australian version, two male housemates sexually abused a female by "Turkey Slapping" her. This was shown through live feed on the internet. This activity did not involve penetration, however.
  • Cheaters, an American reality series that exposes individuals engaging in infidelity, regularly films subject couples in sexual situations with hidden cameras as part of their investigations. The televised version of the series censors the most explicit footage, however DVD releases of the series have included uncensored footage. In particular the video release The Best of Cheaters 4: Too Hot for Broadcast includes footage of two women penetrating themselves with dildos and male-female penetration can also be glimpsed.
  • Porno Valley is another reality series dealing with the adult film industry, and thus includes footage of real sexual acts, though once again no penetration is shown directly.
