List of items and artifacts in Negima
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is a list of items and artifacts that appeared in the Manga Negima.
[edit] Pactio Artifacts
Magic artifacts are often the result of a Pactio, as explained in the entry in Magic in Negima about Pactios.
[edit] Pactio items resulting from a contract with Negi
Asuna (Ensis Exorcizans) - A giant fan, called a harisen, that can exorcize demons with a single swipe. It is a rather powerful artifact. On the pactio card, it is depicted as a giant sword. Why it manifested as a harisen (giant fan) is not certain, though fans have speculated that it is the incomplete form of the sword version. Asuna's sword seems to manifest in times of great emotion, at one point it becomes a sword when she believes Negi is in a near-death situation, at another point a blinding anger does the trick. There is no indication of why this happens but extreme emotions has, to this point, been the deciding factor when Asuna summons the harisen or sword. An important point to note is that the harisen has little to no effect against opponents that possess no magic, such as robots and non-magical beings, (though if it has any substantial effect against Chachamaru is subject to debate, since she is a robot that is magically-empowered). The same cannot be said for the sword version, since it has been shown to cleave through rock. Most recently, Asuna was able to counter multiple magical attacks with the sword version, just with a single swipe. Furthermore, she is starting to gain control over the more powerful version of her artifact, making it appear at will.
Nodoka (Diarium Ejus) - Nodoka gained a picture diary that can read the inner thoughts of people, and prints those thoughts into words and images. This is very useful in a variety of situations, including combat and information gathering, (especially for interrogations, though Nodoka is reluctant to forcibly read the inner thoughts of others - she always apologizes afterwards). This artifact is considered to be very powerful and its potential for misuse is considerable. However, the reason why Nodoka received the book may be due to the fact that her innocent personality prevents her from abusing it. There are two drawbacks to take note. First, is that in order to read the thoughts of a person, she needs to know his/her name and second, the person's mind that the she wishes to read has to be within a 5-point radius of her, (if not, Nodoka could have read Nagi's mind, assuming he is still alive). Its range might be further now, since Nodoka was able to read Yue's mind when she went chasing after her in the lower levels at Library Island. If she does not use the diary or not call a name, it will read her mind automatically by default, much to her embarrassment.
- As a note, Nodoka does not have to meet a person to read their mind. In volume 9, chapter 74, Nodoka uses her book to read the mind of Aizaka Sayo, seat number one and resident ghost of class 3-A. Since Nodoka had never actually met Sayo we can say that she just needs to know the name of who she is contacting, or at the very least, just need to know what they look like (which is possible in Sayo's case since her photo is in the class register).
- The images that appear in her diary are usually simplistic with very poor details. Evangeline even commented that the pictures were not very realistic. Whether this is a property of the artifact or based on Nodoka's perceptions is unclear, but these depictions have led to some misunderstandings, (such as the case of Aizaka Sayo, in which the bad drawings depicted her as some kind of blood-thirsty spirit).
- When in use, the book levitates and turns its own pages as the thoughts of the target person are read. Closing the book automatically stops the mind-reading process. Nodoka can also edit the words and images that appear, as if she were using a word processor. So far, it has been shown that she can delete text and images in the book, simply by pointing with her index finger and using the proper incantation. It is possible that the book has other abilities that have yet to be shown, as Nodoka continues to learn about magic and her artifact.
- When it comes to the origins of the Diarium Ejus, the following passage appears (in Japanese) as part of the instructions on how to use the book (as seen in volume 5, chapter 38):
This book was created in 1459, the masterpiece of (blocked) Shantoto. Its purpose was to act as an aid to (blocked) and his magi, and can also be used as an art (blocked) in the hands of one who would abuse the power.
Setsuna (Sica Shishikushiro) - a complementary shoto, or, wakizashi, is Setsuna's pactio item. In addition to being an extra blade, it is able to multiply into 16 copies and attack the target like a swarm of wasps. It is also useful in very close-quarters, whereby her long-sword would be a hindrance.
Konoka (Flabellum Euri and Flabellum Australe) - The entire outfit she wears on her card, including the fans, is her artifact, in which has been revealed to heal any injuries within three minutes. She has also been training herself with simple incantations to heal minor scrapes and cuts. In chapter 150, Konoka heals a boy's knee with just her practice wand.
Yue (Orbis Sensualium Pictus) - Her artifact is a set consisting of a cloak, book, witch's hat, and a broom. Their abilities are gradually being revealed, with the book appearing to be a beginner's manual for casting spells. Chamo mentions that she has the same Beginner Mage Set that Negi also had. This implies that her equipment is essentially the same as those given to mages in training. At first, her artifact does not offer any immediate firepower, but its potential is starting to prove useful. The beginner's manual has a wide array of general information on various magical topics, like an encyclopedia. It is able to display this information in the form of illusionary pages, like holograms. Even more amazing, is that the textbook is also linked with Mahou.net and updates continuously. It will answer any question Yue asks that pertain to magic. Simply put, Yue now has the equivalent of a magical library branch in one book. She was able to discern Asuna's magic cancellation ability to be among the most powerful, simply by looking it up. Furthermore, she was able to learn the spell needed to amplify Asuna's power. Yue also keeps a practice wand and is already able to cast a few simple spells with it. As for the broom, its purpose has not been shown as of yet, though readers have speculated that it is used like Negi uses his wand, (ie: spell-casting and transport).
Haruna (Imperium Graphices) - Her artifact is also a set. Hers consists of a sketchbook, inkwell, and quill, as well as a hat and apron. As in the anime, whatever she draws becomes real. She has been experimenting with her artifact, making small doodles of aliens, cats and even a turtle. According to Chamo, the artifact is used for easy summoning of low-level Golems. The number of images she can bring to life and the size she can make them is yet unknown. Currently, she was able to make lifelike copies of herself and several of the other girls in order to fool the magic teachers who were after them. It was shown that the images begin to degrade after a short while. She was also able to conjure up a giant armored warrior and dozens of Chamo duplicates. Apparently, she can make any of her images come to life at any time, and does not have to draw them on the spot.
Chisame (Electrium Reguno) - Her artifact is a heart-topped staff, similar to a weapon used by magical girls. The staff allows for several magical properties when used. For starters, it allows for her to attack opponents with a powerful magical attack when used proper.
Secondly, when in conjunction with her laptop PC, it allows her and anyone within her vicinity to enter cyberspace, upon which she can internally hack into systems using her computer knowledge to put a stop to any opponent. However, their physical bodies remain in the real word in a kind of trance-like state. Most likely, it is their astral forms which enters cyberspace.
Additionally, Chisame is supported by seven virtual 'electronic spirits,' which are seen as talking, long-tailed mice. They wanted Chisame to give them names, but she didn't want to be bothered with such a task and left their names up to Makie. Their names are as follows: Kincha, Hanpe, Konnya, Chikuwafu, Negi, Daiko, and Shirataki. They aid Chisame in her battle with Chachamaru in cyberspace by downloading data, and watching out for any kind of viral attacks.
And finally, the staff has the ability to allow Chisame to change her costume form instantaneously similar to her Chiu alter-ego. When her costume is not changed, she can be transformed from use of her pactio into a costume similar to the one on her card. (which was the very first costume Chiu wore in this series). In cyberspace, all characters can change costumes and initiate attacks and defenses.
[edit] Anime only Pactio items
These artifacts are seen only in the anime when Negi was forced to make a Pactio with every girl in his class. Each one also receives a costume as well.
Ku Fei - Magical tonfa that emit waves of energy when used.
Zazie - Magical cards that can slice up demons.
Chao - A pair of Chinese War Fans. Their powers were not shown.
Ayaka - A formal dress with flowers. Its power was not shown.
Akira - A frilled swimsuit and anklet. She is able to create and direct waves of water.
Chachamaru - A new costume with magical laser cannons.
Chisame - She becomes her Net Idol alter ego with magical powers. Her glasses became a power staff.
Satomi - Mechanical arms that deliver a punch called a 'Plasma Punch.'
Satsuki - The entire stall she works at in the manga is her artifact, which enables her to feed dozens of demons at a time until they disappear.
Ako - A huge hypodermic needle.
Makie - A magic ribbon that she can wield like a whip.
Mana - A rifle that fires magic bullets.
Evangeline - She gets a dark costume and her full powers are unsealed.
Yuna - She is dressed in her basketball uniform and can jump very high. Her artifact is not shown, but one can assume it is the basketball depicted in her card.
Kaede - She possesses a huge shuriken. Its power was not shown.
Haruna - A magic marker that allows her to bring any image she draws to life.
Fuuka and Fumika - Both are dressed in ninja outfits and are able to do the shadow doppelganger technique. The number of copies they can make is unknown.
Misa, Madoka and Sakurako - All three are dressed in their cheerleader outfits and are able to empower the others with cheers. In Satsuki's case, they were able to make her go faster to feed a huge crowd of demons.
Sayo - A flaming fireball.
Misora - She wears a nun's habit and seems to be able to call down lightning.
[edit] Other pactio items not resulting from a contract with Negi
Mana- she originally had an artifact from her previous contract with a mage, but since her partner is now deceased, she is no longer able to call forth her item, nor is given any additional magic support, (as stated in the English version of the manga). The guns she carries are not considered as her artifacts, but may be replicas of the original magic items.
Mei (Favor Purgandi)- Her item is a broom. Not much information has been given about what this broom does; though Mei uses it the way Negi uses his staff, (in chapter 156, she is seen flying with it). It may be similar to the broom that Yue has. One possible power of the broom is to completely disarm opponents with a stroke, but it is uncertain whether this is due to the broom, or Mei's own magical prowess.
Misora - A pair of sneakers that gives her superhuman speed and agility. Their combat potential is limited as Misora states that she can only run away with them.
Albireo (To Fyuron To Biographicon) - His item is a bookmark along with a spiraling archive of books. It gives Albireo the power to transform into any person that he recorded in one of the many books that he has spiraling around him. The artifact lacks its usefulness for Albireo as he can only keep his transformed appearance for a few minutes, if the being he wishes to emulate is stronger than him. Add to that the fact that most people are weaker than Albireo himself, he does not need to turn himself into them.
Another ability of Albireo's artifact is that it can, for a full 10 minutes, make him become the emulated being completely (thoughts, emotion, personality, etc.), but the price to pay for this ability is quite high. The book that has the records of the then-copied being would lose all of its power after a single use, and that it would turn into nothing more than a simple biography. Furthermore, Albireo will only have the memories of that person up to the point in which the biography was written. When he was emulating Nagi Springfield, he did not know that the real Nagi had met up with Negi six years before the present time.
[edit] Non-Pactio Artifacts
Other artifacts and items make an appearance throughout the manga. Negi is a collector of antique magic items, and many of these appear during the battle with Evangeline, or at least the chapter page.
[edit] Staffs and wands
Staffs and magic wands are used to help the casting of magic, and can be considered as a kind of focal point. Staffs are necessary for beginners to cast magic although higher-level mages like Evageline and Nagi can cast without one. Negi's staff is able to answer to his call and fly to him. He also uses it as a vehicle (much like a witch riding a broomstick), as it can fly at the speed of a car. Smaller training wands are also Negi's collection and are used in Evageline's resort for students like Yue and Nodoka to practice basic magic. Negi carries a small wand for emergency use as well. In chapter 70, Konoka also carried a retractable wand with her.
During the third day of the Mahora Festival, several thousand wands with simple incantation triggers are distributed among the participants of the so-called Mars Attacks Vs Mage Order Game. These wands can be used by anyone and were made specifically to disable magically animated constructs such as golems and robots with mystical energy. The participants are unaware that they are using real magical items, since they believe that the entire event is a game.
[edit] Magic gun
A magic gun was used by Negi to fight against Evangeline in the black out battle of manga book 3. No long description was given but it is able to shoot down magic arrows cast by Evangeline. Other types of magic guns have been shown in the manga, from small wand-like pistols to large bazooka-like weapons. Negi seems to have some Panzerfaust kind of disposable single-shot rocket weapons. A large number of these weapons were distributed to the participants during the third day of the Mahora Festival to combat Chao's robot army under the pretense that it is a game.
[edit] Love potions
Love potions have appeared a few times in the manga. The first was a potion created by Negi in order to help Asuna. The actual effect of the potion was that anyone of the opposite sex who looked at the person who drank the potion (which in this case, was unfortunately Negi) would instantly fall in love with them. A second love potion appeared as a form of chocolates, and worked internally, the person eating them would fall in love with the first person they saw (which, again, was unfortunately Negi). This effect, unlike the first potion, was more long-term and subtle in effect, possibly in order to reduce the chances of their use being detected. This is because love potions/magic are actually outlawed contraband in Western Magic societies because they modify and alter the free will of other people, and in the case of these love potions- the romantic feelings of the person. Because they can be used for malicious purposes, it is illegal to use or produce them. Negi's first attempt to make one was a poor grade form at best and luckily, he had not been found out and punished for it.
[edit] Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia, a pocket watch given to Negi by Chao allows him to go back in time. The amount of magic used is the determining factor of how far back one can travel, according to Chao in the manga, 24 hours is the limit for a single mage, and is only demonstrated to allow travel in time, not space, however in the anime it is used to take the entire class to Germany in the year 1993. So far, only Negi has used the device frequently, in order to keep his promises to visit each of his students' festival activities.
Unfortunately, the watch is also a trap. When it was brought into Evangeline's resort, it caused the resort to keep them for a week in the real world. Afterwards, it becomes inactive since the main source of energy was the World Tree during the Mahora Festival. Negi and the gang were able to reactivate the watch by going deep into the core of the World Tree, which still had some residual magic left for a time jump. Apparently, it was enough to make it back to the third day of the Mahora Festival, but the watch seemed to break at the end of the jump, which may imply that it has been rendered useless. However, as of ch.153, Negi was able to use it to counter the effects of Mana's time-warping bullets, and to keep pace with Chao during his battle with her. Negi uses a couple of spirits to manipulate the watch in order to counter Chao's time jumps.
[edit] Cassiopeia No.2
Even if the watch designs are the same, Cassiopeia No.2 is carried by Chao and allows her to go into the future if the time-watch is already filled with magic power. She used it to escape from the teachers after the Mahora Fighting Tournament half-a-day. Like Cassiopeia, it does not allow her to travel in space. No details have been said about the limits. Due to its ability, Chao was able to evade physical attacks by moving forward into the future. She was even able to avoid being trapped by Setsuna's Pactio artifact. For the battles in the final day of the festival, the watch is built into the back of her Battlesuit and is controlled by an AI computer. However, during her fight with Negi, the watch is shattered, thereby preventing her from using it to skip through time.
[edit] Red Candy/Blue Candy, Age-Deceiving Pills
The Red Candy/Blue Candy, Age-Deceiving Pills, (English-version: Age-Misrepresentation Pastilles, Red & Blue Candy Drops) are special, very expensive magic pills that Chamo had purchased at maho.net. These pills have the ability to change the outer appearance of the person who takes them, to different age by illusion. The main purpose was to turn Negi 30 years old, in order to help Asuna get the courage to ask out Takahata-sensei, by using Negi as a practice subject. The red pills render the user older, while the blue pills make the user younger. Due to the somewhat unstable effects, it is very difficult to make oneself older or younger more than a few years from his/her true age, and the effects usually last for about half a day. Turning 30 was too hard for Negi, so he settled on a teenage (15 years old) version of himself, (which later became his 'cousin Nagi'). Konoka was the only one so far to be able to attain an adult form of herself (ages 18 and 21), as well as an infant version, (possibly by accident after gorging on the pills). Other users of the pills include the wolf-boy Kotaro (15), Setsuna (7) and Chisame (10) (without her consent when Chachamaru popped one in her mouth). Not surprisingly, the older-looking Negi resembles his father Nagi when he was 15, and even Evangeline was fooled for a moment. Negi has used the pills on a few occasions, most recently to escape the paparazzi after the Mahora Fighting Tournament, and to take out Ako Izumi as 'Nagi' to help her relax before the Mahora Festival's live concert.
[edit] Alchemy potions and magic catalysts
Evangeline used magic catalysts in the first battle with Negi in order to cast magic with her weaken magic powers under the curse. Negi in turn carried potions in the second battle with her for fast casting of magic.
[edit] Magic ring
Evangeline gave a magic ring to Negi that acts as a casting substitute for his staff. This made it easier for him to cast spells during the Mahora Fighting Tournament. The script cast on the ring reads Virga annulata quae movet artem magicam. In Latin it means Ring shaped item that could help cast magic. In other words, it is a magic catylist
[edit] Book of Melchizedek
This is a book stored in the Library Island, it is said to have the powers to make people smart. The Five Baka-Rangers, along with Negi and Konoka, went on an expedition to find it, in order to avoid finishing last during the Second-Year Exams. Negi claims that it is a very powerful artifact, perhaps the Ultimate Spell Book, in which jacking up brainpower would simply be a warm-up.
[edit] Demon sealing bottle
The bottle appeared in chapter 66 and 69, the bottle was used to seal demons in it.
[edit] Magic canceling pendant
Appeared in chapter 69 and 70, the pendant itself is not able to cancel any magic, but it is made for people with that ability (e.g. Asuna can cancel magic cast on or near her.) to cancel all the long distance magic. The body status enhancing magic and ki are still in function even next to the pendant.
[edit] Evangeline's resort
First appeared in chapter 63, Evangeline's resort is a magic artifact built and maintained by Evangeline. Its appearance is a model resort inside a glass sphere and draws people next to it inside. Once inside, people need to stay there for at least 24 hours before they can come out. The time inside the resort is different from outside and every 24 hours inside only equals to one hour of normal time. This resort is a very good place for practicing magic since Evangeline made it easy to cast magic inside, and her servant Chachazero is able to move freely on her own. It is here where Evangeline can utilize her full powers. However, she also recommended to the girls not to use it too often, because it makes them grow older in real life as in the resort, they age 24 hours but in real life, only 1 hour has passed. This does not affect Evangeline, being an immortal Shinso vampire. It has also been revealed that Takahata-sensei has used the resort in order to train in his own fighting style, which could explain why he looks older than he should be, chronologically speaking. This room may be a subtle reference to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber of Dragonball Z, in which a day in the outside world equals a year within.
[edit] Mana's Bullets
As a Shinto Priestess and mercenary for hire, Mana uses a variety of ammunition in order to exorcise ghosts and demons. Most notably used are her 'spellbreaker bullets,' which can pierce through magical barriers and counter spells. In the latest chapters, she is using a form of ammunition that causes her target to warp forward 3 hours into the future.
- Here is a list of bullet types (where each bullet can have more than one effect)
- BB bullets enchanted for exorcism purpose
- Tranquilizing bullets that can send the target person flying a few metres back
- Magic barrier penetrating bullets
- Time shifting bullets that use technology instead of magic to send the target to 3 hours later
- Location shifting bullets enchanted to send the target person about 3 km from the spot
[edit] Regular Items
[edit] Mana's guns
(In the order of appearance)
- This is just an airsoft replica of the actual gun, presumably manufactured by Sun Project, since it is the only airsoft gun manufacturer in Japan with the wooden handle version. However, the manga version seems to be semi-automatic and does not need to use the bolt action. This was used in both chapter 49, 86 and 155, they fire 6mm BB bullets enchanted for exorcism. This was used also as a weapon for the biathlon club activities in the anime. Written as a footnote on the early character design profiles in the manga, the author originally planned for her to use a normal Remington 700 instead. The reason of changing to the military model M40A1 is unknown, although it is a known fact that a rifle with a boxed magazine might be better in some cases.
- Dual IMI Desert Eagle
- This was used in both chapter 49, 86 and 155. She uses them as short-range weapons along with her incredible athletic skills. These are just airsoft replicas of the actual gun, they fire 6mm BB bullets enchanted for exorcism purpose in chapter 49 and presumably something tranquilizing in chapter 86 when used on students.
- This gun fires .50 BMG bullets but since she was using it on students, she loads tranquilizing bullets in it. This is the only gun that is not stated as air soft gun she uses. This was used in chapter 86. Notice it is almost impossible for a .50BMG to not harm a human. Therefore, this might be a replica of the real gun. Either that, or the gun has been tuned down (most military sniper rifles have the ability to adjust the trigger pull) to fire the somewhat weaker tranquilizer round, since the students that were shot were sent flying afar (which is physically impossible, even for .50 BMG).
- This gun was used to fire special bullets that can penetrate magic barriers. (For detail description of the bullet, please see Bullets section above) In the hands of Mana, she has enough skill to fire bullets to bounce back from buildings to attack targets behind a wall.
- This gun was first used in chapter 155, and loaded with time-warping bullets (like the PSG-1). She used it (one-handed) as a defense weapon when Kaede managed to get close enough to her to attack, though a few seconds later, she is shown fighting hand-to-hand with her Desert Eagles again.
[edit] Yue's drinks
(In the order of appearance)
- Green tea Cola
- It appeared in chapter 7.
- Last Elixir
- It appeared in chapter 44 and chapter 45.
- Black vinegar tomato
- It appeared in chapter 74.
- School festival limited merchandise: Water of Life
- It appeared in chapter 81.
- Milk Cola
- It appeared in chapter 127.
[edit] Unknown drinks
In some panels, the words are too small to read, these appeared in chapter 8, 28.
[edit] Unfortunely sold out drinks
- Tomato milk
- In chapter 54, Nodoka coming back with 3 drinks saying the Tomato milk Yue wanted could not be found.
[edit] Soda Machine drinks
These are drinks from a soda machine appeared in chapter 127.
- Milk Tomato (box)
- 7 taste cola (七味コーラprobably a reference to assorted chili pepper powder) (box)
- Tomato soda (can)
[edit] Nuru Nuru X
Nuru Nuru X (Slime Slime X), appeared in chapter 67, the gel was said to have various cosmetic uses.
[edit] Boeing Stearman
The Mahora Aerobatics Club flies Stearman biplanes with an extra fuel tank mounted under the fuselage. Other modifications include covered landing gear, cowled engine, single cockpit (with the front cockpit either removed or the two combined into one, or simply covered by surface material) and squared-off rudder.
Interestingly, thousands of Stearman planes were sold to civil users after the Second World War, which may explain how Mahora Academy obtained the aircraft.
[edit] Mil Mi-24
Apparently a Russian Mi-24 assault low-capacity transport gunship was seen in the background during the Mahora Festival. Equipped weapons remains unknown, although it is possible that it is the popular Hind-D variant of the helicopter (hence comes with better systems than earlier variants, although it is now superseded by the Mi-24PN). How the military clubs managed to obtain that helicopter (and effectively breaking Japanese legislations on self-defense forces) remains unknown.
Ironically, the helicopter (along with other military vehicles seen in the festival) is not used to attack the giant weapon lifeforms that appeared during the 3rd day of the festival. Otherwise, the helicopter would have provided awesome firepower from mid-air.
