The Japanese word for "island" is shima, which as a suffix often changes to jima. The usual kanji for shima is 島. The same kanji has the on'yomi . Many names incorporate one of these. Examples include Amami Ōshima, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa Hontō (Okinawa Main Island).
