The Japanese word for "island" is shima, which as a suffix often changes to jima. The usual kanji for shima is 島. The same kanji has the on'yomi tō. Many names incorporate one of these. Examples include Amami Ōshima, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa Hontō (Okinawa Main Island).
