List of historical capitals of Hungary
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the history of Hungary and the Kingdom of Hungary, the country has had more than one capital city. These were:
- Székesfehérvár and Esztergom from around 1000 until 1361, but the function of a capital was not that clear as it is today
- Buda 1361–1536
- Pressburg (today Bratislava; Hungarian: Pozsony, Slovak: Prešporok) (1536–1848 for Royal Hungary and the Kingdom of Hungary)
- Buda again 1848–1873, but the country was part of Austria from 1849 till 1867, so the true capital was Vienna (Bécs).
- Budapest (including Buda) 1873–present
Note that the Roman provinces on the territory of Hungary, notably Pannonia, had other capitals. Capitals of Roman Pannonia, located in the territory of present day Hungary, were: Aquincum (today Óbuda), Savaria (Szombathely) and Sopianae (Pécs).
