Artists and albums are listed alphabetically, ignoring articles such as "The" and "A". People are sorted by their first name (ie Nelly Furtado is found under "N").

This is a list of original, influential grunge music albums. They appear on at least one (cited) list, either a best-of for the genre or in the top five of a list for a specific year (and are described as "grunge" or "post grunge" by allmusic.com. Numerical citations are to an amateur list, while the text links are to a professional source.

Although citations can be found for calling each of these a "grunge" album, in quite a few cases, the designation would be controversial. For example:

  • The earliest album in the list, the first Violent Femmes album is largely acoustic, but could be connected to grunge by its attitude and the subject matter of its songs
  • The Seattle-based Presidents of the United States of America were clearly part of the same local music scene that produced the most prominent grunge bands, but their generally cheerful, poppy sound does not fit the grunge archetype.

The top five most cited albums are in bold.
