This is a list of famous people, for whom smoking is clearly a recognised part of their public image, and/or who act in a peculiar way about themselves smoking.

- Aydo Abay - The frontman of the indie rock quartret Blackmail. Often seen with a lit cigarette in many of the promotional photos of the band, he has been seen smoking in interviews and music video sets with one.
- Ryan Adams- Singer. Can often be seen with a cigarette on and off stage and during interviews. Has been known to use a special ash tray clipped to the head of his guitar on stage. He is pictured with a cigarette in his mouth on the cover of his first solo album Heartbreaker (2000).
- Emmanuelle Béart - Award-winning French Actress (born August 14, 1965) Often seen smoking on screen and has made numerous publicity photos with cigarette in hand.
- Humphrey Bogart - American actor who often appeared with a cigarette in his mouth, making bogart a slang verb meaning "holding on to a joint instead of passing it on" among cannabis smokers.
- David Bowie - Several photos - both on stage and publicity shots - depict Bowie smoking. According to the biography Strange Fascination, he smokes both Gitane and Marlboro cigarettes. Quit in early 2000s after a heart attack.
- June Brown - British actress who is famous for her role as Dot Cotton in the BBC soap opera EastEnders; both Brown and her character are heavy smokers.
- Herman Brusselmans - Belgian author who claims that he smokes 'because he has the talent for it.' According to him, this talent is quite rare. Brusselmans is a heavy smoker of L&M cigarettes.
- Charles Bukowski - American poet and writer known to have smoked Pall Mall brand cigarettes throughout his life.
- Paul Banks - American singer and songwriter for the New York band Interpol. Smokes frequently on stage, in photo shoots and in interviews.
- Beverley Callard - British actress best known for her portrayal of Liz McDonald in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street.
- Johnny Cash - Legendary American country singer. Often photographed smoking a cigarette with a ponderous expression on his face.
- Nick Cave - Brooding Australian singer/songwriter and leader of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Insists that since he started smoking Marlboro Lights, his record sales are going to go down. Has cancelled concerts at venues which have a strict no-smoking policy.
- Andrew Dice Clay - Raunchy American stand-up comic, almost never seen with out a cigarette (even sometimes unlit due to smoking restrictions).
- Jeremy Clarkson - Host of British television show Top Gear, claims the Koenigsegg CCX made him quit smoking.
- Kurt Cobain- Late singer and guitarist of the band Nirvana. Often seen smoking in interviews and on-stage.
- Chris Cornell - Lead singer for bands Soundgarden and Audioslave often seen smoking in interviews and on stage.
- Bette Davis - American film actress who was never without a cigarette. She starred in Now, Voyager (1942), which has the famous scene in which Paul Henreid places two cigarettes in his mouth, lights them, and then passes one to Bette Davis. She died in 1989 after a long battle with breast cancer and having suffered several strokes.
- Kim Deal - Bassist for alternative rock band the Pixies, shown smoking on the Pixies: Sell Out DVD.
- James Dean - American actor and icon, who smoked 2 packs of Chesterfield cigarettes a day. He died in a car crash in 1955, aged 24.
- Johnny Depp - American actor, can often be seen in interviews smoking. On Inside the Actor's Studio he apologized for poisoning himself with the cigarette, and then lit one up. Has a preference for chocolate flavoured rolling papers.
- Marlene Dietrich - Famed German actress who smoked as part of her "Dietrich image." Lived to 90.
- Pete Doherty- Of the band Babyshambles and formerly of The Libertines. Rarely seen without cigarette in press photos. Smokes onstage while singing and in interviews.
- Bob Dylan - American singer song writer, attributed voice change on his album Nashville Skyline to his quitting smoking, though this is disputed. Seen reading a paper in the 1967 documentary Don't Look Back, where he quotes the journalist as saying he "smokes eighty a day."
- Colin Farrell - Colin James Farrell, born May 31, 1976, is an Irish actor. He is seldom seen off-screen in interviews without a cigarette. He is also a notorious drinker, and has been quoted as saying he smokes one carton per week (200 cigarettes).
- George Harrison - Member of The Beatles that was famously seen smoking in the movies A Hard Days Night and Help!. His off-screen chain-smoking habit lead to his death from lung cancer in 2001.
- Theo van Gogh - Dutch film maker ever accompanied by a dark French cigarette.
- Audrey Hepburn - Iconic actress that often smoked several packs a day, immortalized first in the classic film Roman Holiday where her character, Princess Anne, lights a cigarette for the very first time. She is most commonly associated smoking from a filter in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
- Bill Hicks - American stand-up comedian, satirist, and social critic, with a reputation suffering from his drug use. In 1988, he quit drugs, falling back to cigarette smoking, a theme that featured heavily in his performances. Once jokingly claimed his cigarette habit was so bad that he was going through two lighters per day. In the final years of his life, his voice was noticably different, presumably from the amount of cigarettes he continued to smoke.
- Saul Hudson (Slash) - The cigarette has become a trademark for Slash along with his top hat. He is always seen playing his guitar with a cigarette in his mouth and was once saying that if he could have anything in the world, it would be a never-ending supply of Marlboro cigarettes.
- James Hunt - English Formula One driver. Was often seen smoking while not driving. He usually lit a cigarette on the victory podium, however he later quit.
- Joe Jackson - Singer. Jackson moved from New York City to England as a result of the city’s smoking ban.
- Shahrukh Khan - Bollywood top superstar, rarely seen without cigarettes off-screen, though he has vowed to reduce smoking from his 40th birthday.
- Anne Kirkbride - Playing Deirdre Barlow on the soap opera Coronation Street, Kirkbride is well-known for her raspy voice (which intensified over the years), and has become one of her trademarks. Kirkbride is a chain smoker in real life, although her character is no longer a smoker. Diagnosed with lymphoma in 1993, and quit the following year; but admitted that she could not quit smoking.
- Denis Leary - A comedian incorporating smoking into his act.
- John Lennon - Former Beatles singer and songwriter. Prototypically portrayed with colored sunglasses and shaggy hair.
- René Lévesque - former and first indépendantiste premier of Québec. Almost never in public seen without his trademark Players cigarette.
- Jim Leyland - Baseball manager, managed the World Series Champion Florida Marlins in 1997, currently of the 2006 American League Champion Detroit Tigers, often known to smoke in the dugout during games. More recently, as smoking has been banned in many major league stadiums, he smokes on the ramp to the clubhouse between innings.
- Margrethe II of Denmark - Queen of Denmark. A well known chain smoker.
- Freddie Mercury - Former Queen vocalist. His heavy smoking led to a roughening of his voice during the 1980s, but he eventually gave up smoking towards the end of the decade after being diagnosed with HIV; he died of AIDS in 1991.
- Joni Mitchell - Canadian musician and painter. Started smoking at age nine; claims to have fallen in love with smoking from the first puff. Her self-portrait on the cover of her 2000 album Both Sides Now depicts her with a cigarette in her hand.
- Brian Molko - Musician of Placebo, often seen smoking in promotional shots and during concerts.
- Joshua Homme - Musician of Queens of the Stone Age, often smokes during interviews, skilled at blowing smoke rings.
- Edward R. Murrow - A chain smoker, Murrow was seldom seen without a cigarette in hand.
- Conor Oberst - Popular folk musician, often photographed with a cigarette in his hand. Has expressed a particular affection for Parliaments.
- J. Robert Oppenheimer - Father of the atomic bomb, photographed often with a cigarette dangling from his mouth and known for his peculiar way of removing ash with the tip of a finger.
- Al Pacino - Iconic Academy Award-winning American stage and film actor. Suffered from a throat disorder in the mid-1980s which forced him to stop smoking cigarettes. In Sea of Love, he sounded noticibly different, featuring his now-famous dark, owly eyes and hoarse, deep voice.
- Jimmy Page - Guitarist of British rock band, Led Zeppelin. Chain smoked on stage towards the final years of Led Zeppelin, reportedly to curb cravings for heroin.
- Sean Penn - American actor, frequently photographed off-camera with a lit American Spirit cigarette. Though he has attempted to quit several times, he reportedly has a four-pack a day habit. [1]
- Kiefer Sutherland - Award-winning actor most noted for his portrayal of Jack Bauer in the hit TV series 24 has conducted many interviews and appearances with cigarette in hand.
- Joaquin Phoenix - American actor and chain smoker. Portrayed fellow smoker Johnny Cash in Walk the Line (2005).
- Georges Pompidou - Former French president, often pictured with a cigarette in his mouth.
- Ayn Rand - Prominent novelist and creator of the philosophy Objectivism was often seen with cigarette in hand. She discussed in her novel Atlas Shrugged how cigarettes are a profound symbol of man and his ability to tame nature: "... Fire, a dangerous force,tamed at his fingertips... When a man thinks, there is a spot of fire alive in his mind- and it is appropriate that he should have the burning point of a cigarette as his one expression."
- Rajinikanth - a stylish smoker and great Tamil cinema hero who entered into cinema because of his style of smoking. Now he decides to avoid smoking scenes.
- Aesop Rock - Underground Rapper. His trademark husky voice is often attributed to his smoking habit. Reportedly smoked four packs per day early in his career.
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt - 32nd President of the United States, who was featured in photographs smiling with his face turned up and with a cigarette in his mouth (with the cigarette actually not touching his lips, but in a cigarette holder–one of the few people to use one). (Polio)
- Keith Richards Guitarist for the Rolling Stones. A frequent smoker on stage and in interviews.
- Axl Rose - Lead singer for Guns N' Roses. Often seen smoking cigarettes and cigars on and off stage, featured in several music videos while smoking.
- Jean-Paul Sartre - French existentialist philosopher, critic, novelist and dramatist. Well-known lover of Gauloise cigarettes.
- Klaus Schulze - German Electronic music pioneer.
- Rod Serling - Often had a cigarette in hand when introducing episodes of the The Twilight Zone.
- Tupac Amaru Shakur - Arguably the most famous rapper in history, the also actor/activist was usually seen smoking Newport cigarettes in most of his interviews.
- Frank Sinatra - Said to have been buried with a pack of Camels and a Zippo lighter.
- Sócrates - Captain of the 1982 FIFA World Cup Brazilian football team.
- Britney Spears - American pop singer whose 20-a-day smoking habit became public when she was in her early 20s. She stopped smoking briefly a few years later after becoming pregnant with her first child but has since resumed her smoking habit after having her second child.
- Elliott Smith- Late singer/songwriter known for his chain-smoking of Camels.
- Sharon Stone- Actress known for her smoking in the most widely known scene of Basic Instinct.
- Terry-Thomas - English comic known for his seven inch long cigarette holders.
- Hunter S. Thompson - American writer, creator of gonzo journalism and counter-culture icon. Best known for his books Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972. The quintessential image of Thompson includes a cigarette in a cigarette holder/filter. (Suicide)
- Judy Baar Topinka - First female State Treasurer in Illinois, and currently the only elected Republican statewide official (born January 16, 1944), is unapologetic about her cigarette habit.
- Ville Valo - Founder and lead vocalist of the Finnish Goth-Rock band HIM. Is rarely seen without a cigarette perched between his lips.
- Edward Van Halen - Legendary guitar player. Founding member of the rock band Van Halen. Known as an avid smoker on and off stage.
- Eddie Vedder - Member of the American band Pearl Jam, often seen smoking and drinking bottles of wine while playing live with the band.
- Kurt Vonnegut - American author and a Pall Mall smoker. He claimed that smoking Pall Malls was a classy way to commit suicide. During an interview at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he remarked that he was angry his smoking had yet to kill him.
- Izzy Stradlin - American guitarist. Former Rhythm guitarist of Guns N' Roses, frequently seen smoking in music videos.
- Michael Weikath - German heavy metal guitarist and one of the founding members of the legendary power metal band Helloween, 'Weiki' often has a cigarette dangling from his mouth on stage. He has stated that he usually smokes Prince cigarettes, but in concerts will usually be smoking Marlboros.
- Scott Weiland - American rock singer currently fronting the supergroup Velvet Revolver. Formerly of Stone Temple Pilots. Most commonly seen smoking onstage and during interviews.
- Ron Wood - British guitarist and member of the Rolling Stones. Once an even heavier smoker than his band-mate Keith Richards, Wood has attempted to curb his cigarette consumption after being diagnosed with emphysema in 2004. However, as of the 2006 leg of the Bigger Bang Tour, Wood was reportedly smoking onstage once again.
- Frank Zappa - American composer and musician who was renowned for his cigarette and coffee preferences, although he abstained from all other drugs. Said tobacco was his favourite 'food'. Cigarettes are referenced in the titles of two of his instrumentals, It Must Be a Camel and Twenty Small Cigars, and mentions of smoking can also be found throughout his lyrics.
- Tony Yayo - Known as the "Talk of New York" (T.O.N.Y.). Member of G-Unit is often seen smoking.
- Angus Young , Lead guitarist of legendary rock band AC/DC, often seen in interviews smoking Benson & Hedges.
- Zinedine Zidane - Retired French footballer and national hero, the 'face' of a global anti-smoking campaign.[2]
- Anthony Bourdain- Frequently seen smoking on his show Anthony Bourdain: No reservations.

- Red Auerbach - legendary Boston Celtics coach. He would light a cigar in victory, when he thought the game was over.
- Ron Bennington - Radio personality. Whenever receiving a gift/care-package he prefers cigars above anything else.
- Milton Berle - American comedian, who was usually seen with a cigar.
- Art Buchwald - political pundit and humorist, has smoked cigars when giving speeches
- Anthony Burgess - novelist and critic, author of A Clockwork Orange and Earthly Powers - smoked up to 80 cigars, panatellas, cigarillos, cheroots and/or cigarettes per day. His preferred smoke was the Schimmelpenninck slim cigar. Died of lung cancer.
- George Burns - American comedian whose quip on happiness was, "A good cigar, a good meal, a good cigar and a good woman - or a bad woman; it depends on how much happiness you can handle."[3] He was also given a tribute by Cigar Aficionado magazine.[4].
- Fidel Castro - President of Cuba - his father introduced him to cigars when he was 15 years old. "I used to be with a cigar in my mouth all the time." [5] He quit when he was about 59.
- Winston Churchill - politician, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Was so fond of cigars, a cigar size was named after him in his honour.
- Fidel Ramos - politician, former President of the Philippines. He is frequently seen holding or smoking a cigar during cabinet meetings, political rallies, and speaking engagements.
- Madonna - Madonna was famous for smoking a cigar during the David Letterman (see here) show in 1994. Madonna still smokes cigars until this day amid her healthy lifestyle, and during her husband Guy Ritchie's filming schedules, most mornings she has been reported to always be there are 6:00 with a cigar in the mouth cooking the crew breakfast.

- Bill Clinton - politician and former U.S. President.
- Adolf Galland - WW2 german fighter ace, even installed a lighter in his cockpit.
- Bill Cosby - American comedian, attributes his fondness for cigars to his idol Groucho Marx.
- Tom DeLay - American politician who has long been known as a strong supporter of the trade embargo against Cuba. In a photo, published in 2005 by Time Magazine, DeLay is seen smoking a Cuban cigar. [6]

- Bo Derek - actress (10) who appeared on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine smoking a cigar
- Linda Evangelista - model who appeared on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine smoking a cigar
- Pim Fortuyn - Late Dutch politician, was rarely seen without a Cuban cigar
- Sigmund Freud - prototypically smokes while his patients lie on the couch. He remarked "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar", regarding the phallic symbolism of cigars. Suffered from oral cancer.
- Kinky Friedman - singer, comedian, and Texas gubernatorial candidate in 2006
- George Gershwin - American jazz/classical composer, often depicted smoking a cigar.
- Che Guevara - Argentinian revolutionary. Used to smoke cigars on meeting pauses.
- Ulysses S. Grant- 18th President of the United States and American Civil War hero. Some Historians say that he smoked 20 cigars a day. He began smoking cigars at Fort Adelson in 1862. When a reporter commented that Grant liked cigars, people began sending him cigars. He received over 20,000.
- Daryl Hannah - American movie actress
- Saddam Hussein - former President of Iraq, obsessed with smoking the Havanas that his eldest daughter Raghad Hussein personally sends him regularly. The cigars are delivered to Saddam's prison by the Red Cross.
- Samuel L Jackson - Actor.
- Rodrigo de Jerez - Probably the first European to smoke. He participated in Columbus' first voyage to the Americas. On Cuba he encountered the custom to inhale the smoke of herbs wrapped in a leaf, probably tobacco. In his native Spain his smoking was seen as a diabolical habit. According to oral tradition he was sentenced to seven years confinement by the Inquisition
- Michael Jordan - Notorious cigar smoker, often seen with a cigar in the locker room during championship celebrations.
- John F. Kennedy - President of the United States. When Kennedy imposed a trade embargo on Cuba, the night before issuing the executive order authorizing the embargo, he supposedly ordered Pierre Salinger to obtain 1,000 Cuban cigars.
- Suge Knight - Head of Death Row Records. Suge is rarely seen without a cigar in his clutch. The cigar is part of his persona
- Ernie Kovacs - legendary actor and comic, who often incorporated his cigars into the roles he played.
- Emeril Lagasse - TV chef.
- David Letterman - Late night TV host. Reportedly has cut down his trademark cigars since his 2000 heart bypass surgery.
- Rush Limbaugh - Conservative Radical Radio Talk Show Host.
- Marcello Lippi - Italian football coach, was famously seen smoking a cigar after Italy won the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
- Susan Lucci - Daytime Emmy Award-winning actress most famous for playing Erica Kane on the long-running soap opera All My Children who appeared on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine smoking a cigar
- Groucho Marx - comedian and actor with trademark moustache and stumpy cigar.
- Demi Moore - actress (Ghosts, Indecent Proposal) who appeared on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine smoking a cigar
- Pete Nice -Member of the old school hip hop group, 3rd Bass, often seen smoking in music videos smoking cigars
- P. J. O'Rourke - American political satirist, journalist, and writer. Said "Personally, I believe a rocking hammock, a good cigar, and a tall gin & tonic is the way to save the planet."
- Diamond Dallas Page- Former Professional Wrestler and Author. Known to use Cigar Smoking as part of his Ring Character. He legitimately does like to smoke them when not "in character".
- Brad Paisley - country music singer
- George Peppard- Played "Hannibal" on The A-Team. Smoked cigars on and off screen.
- Pope St. Pius X-The saintly pontiff of happy memory was known to enjoy cigars on occasion.
- Rene Rivkin - stock market guru from Australia, known for his flamboyant style, ever-present worry beads and chain cigar smoking. Was quoted as saying "I smoke Cigars, I don't like the taste but they clear a room faster than a Yoko Ono album" (Suicide)
- Pete Rose - former Major League Baseball player and manager; MLB's all-time career hits leader.
- Terri Runnels- As "Marlena" (The Manager/Valet of Goldust.) was often seen at ringside smoking a cigar. Like Diamond Dallas Page, actually does enjoy them.
- Sir Jimmy Savile - British TV personality and former professional wrestler. Buys two sizes of cigars - regular ones to smoke and larger ones "for the cameras."
- Claudia Schiffer - model who appeared on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine smoking a cigar
- Arnold Schwarzenegger - Austrian-born movie star and current Governor of California. Avid cigar smoker.
- William "Bill" Shatner - Canadian actor that famously played James T. Kirk in Star Trek in the 1960's, among other roles, and, can frequently be seen smoking cigars on the recent hit series Boston Legal alongside James Spader.

- Jessica Simpson - Pop Diva, actress, and model sometimes indulges in cigars

- Charles Spurgeon - Famous British Baptist preacher, known to many as the Prince of Preachers. Once remarked, "When I have found intense pain relieved, a weary brain soothed, and calm, refreshing sleep obtained by a cigar, I have felt grateful to God, and have blessed His name."

- Mark Twain - American author. Said he smoked whenever awake and once claimed to have smoked 24 cigars in one day. Once commented that quitting was easy; he had done it a thousand times.

- Jesse Ventura - American former wrestler, wrestling announcer, actor and politician. Once claimed that Arnold Schwarzenegger introduced him to cigars while filming the 1987 film, Predator.
- Raquel Welch - actress.
- Ron White- Comedian of Blue Collar fame typically seen with a glass of scotch in one hand and a cigar in the other.

- Bing Crosby - American actor and singer. Often photographed with pipe and frequently smoked in films.
- Aleister Crowley - British Occultist. Often photographed with a pipe; he enjoyed smoking straight perique soaked in rum.

- Clint Eastwood - Known to be a consistent user of tobacco products, especially during his earlier films.

- John Forsythe - American actor. Stopped in 1982 when ordered to by his physician.
- Stephen Fry - English comedian, author, actor, and director - was the last ever person awarded the title of Pipe Smoker of the Year before the British tobacco advertising ban.
- Vincent van Gogh - painter. Several of his self-portraits feature the pipe.\

- Norman Rockwell - painter. His paintings feature a lot of pipes as well.
- Sir Walter Raleigh--military leader,sailor in service to her majesty's navy was an strong advocate of tobacco and in particular pipe-smoking. A 17th Century print shows Sir Walter stetched out in a chair, smoking a four foot long pipe, being lit by a servant boy.

- At The Drive In - The American post-Hardcore band admitted that during the recording of their debut album Acrobatic Tenement they were under the influence of marijuana and rumours also surfaced that members Cedric Bixler Zavala's and Omar Rodriguez Lopez's heavy drug use was behind the band's break up.
- Louis Armstrong - a steady user and arrested in March 1931 for possession, according to his 1971 autobiography. Said to have been fond of 'muggles' all through his long career.
- The Beatles - symbols of sixties drug use.
- Jack Black - Actor, member of the band Tenacious D, promotes the legalization of marijuana, even referring to those who wish to keep it banned as "old fucking shrivs" in the song, "City Hall". Nominated for High Times' "Stoner of the Year" in 2003. [8]
- Dave Chappelle - Wrote and starred in the stoner film Half Baked, performed various weed-related skits on Chappelle's Show, and has openly admitted to the use of the drug in his personal life.
- Tommy Chong - famous alongside Cheech Marin as the infamous stoner duo Cheech and Chong for the "cannabis culture" films. Still smoking today.
- Bill Clinton - famous as a cannabis user for his quip during the 1992 presidential election that he tried marijuana, but "never inhaled"
- George Clinton - Leader of the legendary funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic, and a long time legalization activist
- Joe Cocker - arrested in 1976 in Australia for possession of cannabis.
- Mitch Daniels current Governor of Indiana and former head of the Office of Management and Budget for US President George W. Bush - arrested in 1971 for possession of cannabis while a student at Princeton University.
- Bob Denver - actor best known for playing the role of Gilligan on Gilligan's Island. Spent the later years of his life using cannabis and raising goldfish.[9]
- Snoop Dogg - Rapper, Known weed smoker. Often seen smoking on stage, in his car, and on various TV appearances. It was revealed that he has a room in his home specifically for weed smoking known as the Green Room. He claimed to have quit smoking in 2003, only to relapse after 4 months.
- Dr. Dre - Rapper famous for the release of the hit album The Chronic, which got its name from a slang term for cannabis. Also released the single "The Next Episode," which popularized the phrase "Hey, hey, hey, hey, smoke weed every day."
- The Game - Rapper who can be seen smoking marijuana in the studio. He has also made many referances to the drug in various songs
- Bob Dylan - famous singer/songwriter who was known to smoke marijuana. Dylan is often considered responsible for influencing the early drug use of the Beatles. Wrote the song Rainy Day Women #12 and 35, the chorus of which is a jubilant "But I would not feel so all alone/ Everybody must get stoned"
- Art Garfunkel - Busted twice in 2004 and 2005 for possession, the latter after a joint was found in his car.
- Allen Ginsberg - American Beat poet. He formed a bridge between the Beat movement of the 1950s and the hippies. Said "Pot is fun!" and "I smoke marijuana every chance I get."
- Gary Hall Jr. - American World Class and Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer. Tested positive for cannabis during the opening days of the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. He avoided a punishment because at the time THC was not on the list of banned substances. After another positive test in 1998, he received a three-month suspension from competition. During the 2000 Olympics however, he said he was clean, and would never smoke again.
- Woody Harrelson - Pro-hemp activist known for his frequent smoking habits. Smokes the drug for both recreational and meditative purposes. Narrated Grass, a film about the history of marijuana. Is a member of NORML.
- Prince Harry - member of the British Royal family. Experienced some controversy with cannabis and was persuaded to stop.
- Jimi Hendrix - Famous guitar player. Was known for smoking cannabis on stage and in his limosine.
- Mick Jagger and Keith Richards - famous 1969 bust, defended by The Times in an editorial.
- Fela Kuti - Nigerian musician, bandleader and activist, founder of Afrobeat. Swallowed a joint that police planted on him. In response, the police took him into custody and waited to examine his feces. Fela enlisted the help of his prison mates and gave the police someone else's feces. He was freed and recounted this tale in his album Expensive Shit.
- Timothy Leary - American writer and psychologist. 1960s counterculture icon and campaigner for psychedelic drug research and use.
- Ludacris - Rapper from Atlanta known for his claims to smoke a large amount of the drug. Released "Blueberry Yum Yum," an ode to a particular strain of cannabis. Its video features Ludacris touring a greenhouse in Amsterdam and smoking two "mega joints."
- Bill Maher - Comedian and satirist. Member of NORML's Advisory Board. Makes frequent allusions to his pot smoking habit on his HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher.
- Bob Marley - as a Rastafari, Bob Marley was a great defender of cannabis, which he used as a sacrament. It is mentioned in many of his songs and on the cover of Catch a Fire he is seen smoking a large spliff.
- Rosa Meriläinen - Finnish politician. In an interview she confessed to having used cannabis during her career as a representative.
- George Michael - pop icon claims to smoke too much cannabis.
- Robert Mitchum - American actor and singer. He used cannabis in the late 1940s and was the first Hollywood actor arrested for possession of cannabis[10]. Smoked cigarettes as well.
- Mo Mowlam - Popular UK politician, said (parodying Bill Clinton) that she tried it and inhaled.
- Willie Nelson - A member of NORML, they call him "America's most beloved marijuana smoker". Those that have been on his tour bus have described seeing an ashtray with several joints, live cannabis plants, and garbage bags full of the drugs. [11]
- Ed O'Brien - Guitarist in British rock band Radiohead. He has admitted to being stoned while recording tracks for their seminal 1995 album The Bends.
- Stefan Raab - A German entertainer popular for his cannabis-themed songs and music videos.
- Carl Sagan - Frequent cannabis smoker who wrote an essay on cannabis use under the pseudonym "Mr. X," which he credits as inspiring much of his intellectual work (although this was not known until after his death). His illustrious career is often considered a testament to the idea that smoking cannabis does not make people unambitious and lazy[citation needed].
- Gwen Stefani- wrote Rock Steady in Jamaica with her band No Doubt, with numerous references to cannabis in the lyrics. Also references the drug in her solo album Love, Angel, Music, Baby.
- Hunter S. Thompson - Well-known user of cannabis and other drugs. Wrote Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a drug-filled book that's very popular in cannabis culture. Pioneer of gonzo journalism.
- Peter Tosh - Rastafari musician, wrote Legalise It, famous for smoking on stage and getting beaten up by the police as a result.
- Montel Williams - Advocate for the use of medicinal cannabis, which he uses to treat multiple sclerosis.
- Sean Paul - Made a song with Busta Rhymes, called Gimme the Light, in which he sings about smoking cannabis.
- Method Man and Redman - References to smoking weed abound in their lyrics. Method is a member of the revolutionary hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan who with the exception of Ghostface, who recently stopped, all smoke marijuana as well. Red and Meth, who have both released critically-acclaimed solo records, appeared in a mid-'90s commercial for St. Ide's and later hooked up on their light-hearted duet Blackout!. Then in late 2001, they released their comedic stoner flick How High. They also stared in a short lived sitcom, Method & Red. As of 2006, Redman is co-hosting the High Times Stony Awards in October, while Meth just released a new solo album (which has cameos from Redman) aptly titled 4:21...The Day After.
- Ian Brown, singer, former frontman of The Stone Roses, stated to have regularly smoked cannabis before appearing on stage.

- Bender Bending Rodriguez, fictional Robot character in Matt Groening's Futurama.
- Chandler Bing, Friends - Seen smoking in earlier seasons, gave up smoking later on but still occasionally smokes in secret (e.g. before his wedding to Monica Geller).
- James Bond - In the novels Bond smokes Morland Specials, a mixture of Turkish and Balkan tobacco which he has specially made for him by a Mayfair tobacconist. His consumption can run to as many as sixty a day, though in the novel Thunderball he switches to an unspecified low-tar brand. In the movies, what Bond smoked depended on who was portraying him. Sean Connery's Bond smoked cigarettes while the Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan versions smoked Cigars.
- Patty and Selma Bouvier on The Simpsons - Marge's chain smoking sisters.
- Archie Bunker, All In The Family - Is often seen smoking a cigar. There is even an episode where he has a bet with Michael Stivic on whether he can go 24 hours without a cigar.
- Caterpillar from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - smokes a water pipe, capable of some tricks.
- The Cigarette Smoking Man on The X-Files - is almost always seen chain-smoking Morley cigarettes, and is usually surrounded by clouds of smoke. The irony of this character is that the actor is actually a non-smoker, smoking herbal cigarettes.
- Holden Caulfield from The Catcher In The Rye - constantly smoking cigarettes throughout the novel. Says that he has smoked a carton since he left Pencey Prep.
- Almost all the characters of The Lord of the Rings - though what substance is present within them is uncertain; pipe-weed is common throughout the tale, especially with Hobbits.
- Alistair Crane on Passions - is usually seen smoking cigars. The cigars were treated as a trademark of the character, as finding a cigar butt, or smelling the smoke would indicate that Alistair was in an area.
- John Constantine on Hellblazer - A British street magician created by Alan Moore for the Swamp Thing comic book series; later had his own series and a movie. He's almost never seen without a Silk Cut cigarette. Diagnosed with terminal lung cancer but managed to recover.
- Lt. Columbo - Peter Falk was alwas seen with a cigar during Columbo!
- Duc de Richleau and his friends Simon Aaron, Rex Van Ryn and Richard Eaton featured in many Dennis Wheatley novels, one time even went as far as using their last moments of freedom to smoke their last Hoyo de Monterrey cigars.
- Sybil Fawlty on Fawlty Towers - always smoking while on the phone. She also might be responsible for her husband Basil's frequent inability to obtain fire for his cigarettes.
- Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli - A rebellious figure from America's hit 1970s television show Happy Days. He was seldom seen without a pack of unfiltered Lucky Strike cigarettes rolled in his sleeve, while riding his "hog".
- Nick Fury - cigar-chomping leader of an elite army unit in World War II, featured in Marvel Comics.
- James Gordon on Batman - Some incarnations depict him as a cigarrette smoker, while others depict him as an avid cigar smoker. He is occasionally shown as trying to quit.
- Dale Gribble, King Of The Hill - One of Hank Hill's best friends is almost always smoking a cigarette.
- J. Jonah Jameson - cigar-chewing newspaper editor and constant foe of Spider-Man.
- Sonny Crockett - Frequently smoked cigarettes during the first seasons of Miami Vice. Abruptly stops smoking during the series.
- Captain Haddock - The belligerent companion of Hergé's popular Tintin, frequently seen smoking his pipe.
- Boss Hogg, bad guy from The Dukes of Hazzard - always smoking a cigar.
- Sherlock Holmes - detective, iconically shown smoking the pipe when not playing the violin.
- Spider Jerusalem, gonzo journalist and vigilante from the Transmetropolitan comic series. Smokes Carcinoma Angels brand cigarettes and insists on his two long-suffering assistants smoking as well.
- Cosmo Kramer, Seinfeld - Has been known to smoke both cigars and pipes. There has even been storylines involving his use of tobacco.
- Krusty the Klown on The Simpsons - A chain smoking clown that can be seen even smoking on the children's program that he hosts.
- Lucky Luke - Belgian comics character with a cigarette constantly at his lips, in a parody of abundant cigarette usage in Westerns. In 1983 the author, Morris, was praised by the World Health Organization for replacing the cigarette with a piece of straw.
- Tony Montana - the protagonist in the 1983 movie Scarface, was an avid cigar smoker.
- Maigret - French detective created by Georges Simenon, often smoking his pipe while seeking inspiration.
- Steven McCroskey - air traffic controller from Airplane!, who picked the wrong day to quit smoking (and drinking, and taking amphetamines, and sniffing glue).
- The Penguin, Batman Villain - Is often depicted smoking a cigarette on the end of a foot long holder.
- Popeye - sailor smoking a corncob pipe.
- Ricky Ricardo on I Love Lucy was often seen with a cigarette in his mouth. Desi Arnaz was a life-long smoker.
- Dylan Sanders from Charlie's Angels. Seen smoking in a high school bathroom in her introduction when she was a teenager to the song I Love Rock 'n' Roll by Joan Jett while flipping the security camera her middle finger in an act of teenage rebellion. She quits in 1996 but retains a raspy voice as a result of past smoking. She keeps her trusty American flag Zippo lighter as a good luck charm
- Col. John "Hannibal" Smith, commander of The A-Team - even when fighting, Hannibal smokes the cigars that Face has to supply him with.
- The Smokers - Waterworld. Every one and all of these pirates is a smoker. Cigarettes are amongst the most heavily sought after treasure for these people. The Deacon - their leader - often deals out smokes to keep the morale favorable towards himself.
- Solid Snake - main protagonist from the Metal Gear video game series, perpetually carrying a pack of cigarettes. Snake continues to smoke, despite other characters reminding him of the dangers. He can also use cigarette smoke to reveal laser tripwires in some games. Similarly, Big Boss smokes cigars in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and uses them to burn off leeches that have attached to his body.
- Lieutenant Starbuck and Kara Thrace from the 1970s and 2000s versions of Battlestar Galactica respectively.
- Patsy Stone, Absolutely Fabulous - chain smoking tart who wakes up with her previous cigarette still in her mouth. When she doesn't smoke she's probably on some heavier stuff.
- Wolverine - the cigar-chomping mutant from the X-Men comic books, movies, and cartoons.
- Sam Spade - private eye from Dashiell Hammett's novel The Maltese Falcon is constantly said to be rolling cigarettes.
- Sanji - Cook from the Pirate anime One Piece. Sanji is almost constantly smoking a cigarette.
- Dean Learner - fictional producer and co-star of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Leaner is seen smoking cuban cigars several times in the series - has smoked cigars since he was 12, according to one interview.
- Turtle - A popular character from HBO's Entourage. In almost every episode, he, along with the rest of Vince and the gang can be seen smoking marijuana in more than one scene.
- Faith Lehane Faith the Vampire Slayer from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel 'The dark slayer' seems to have picked up her smoking habit from her two-year stay in a Californian women's prison. Like Spike the vampire, the other smoker in this Fox universe, she smokes 'Morleys' like the 'cigarette smoking man' in The X-Files.
- Spike Spiegel, as well as Faye Valentine and Jet Black of Cowboy Bebop, regularly seen smoking cigarettes. Despite consistent lack of money, the trio always seem to have a huge supply of cigarettes.
