This is a list of famous people responsible for a death – people who became famous either before committing murder or being responsible for an accidental death, or afterward but do not specifically derive their fame for having done so. This is not intended to be a list of people who became famous for committing murder or accidentally killing someone.

- William S. Burroughs - Fatally wounded his wife while attempting to shoot a glass off her head during a drug-inspired impersonation of William Tell.
- Albert Camus - Driver in a car accident which killed his publicist Michel Gallimard, and also himself.

- Christian Brando - Son of actor Marlon Brando, convicted of the voluntary manslaughter of his half-sister Cheyenne's boyfriend on 16 May 1990 at his father's residence on Mulholland Drive.
- Matthew Broderick - American actor. In 1987, while in Northern Ireland, was the driver in an auto collision which killed the 2 people in the other car.
- Cassidy - Rapper convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a 22-year old man.
- C-Murder - Rapper signed to No Limit Records, killed 16-year-old Steve Thomas with a single gunshot to the chest during a dispute in Harvey, Louisiana in 2003.
- Arlene Francis - American actress and TV personality. She propped open a window of her 8th story apartment with a dumbbell, which slipped and fell onto a pedestrian below, killing him. 3 years later, she was driving on a rain-swept highway and collided with another car, killing the other driver.
- Rebecca Gayheart - American actress. Hit and killed a nine-year-old boy with her car in 2001, plead no contest to a misdemeanor charge of involuntary vehicular manslaughter.
- Lane Garrison - American actor. Drove his car into a tree, killing one of the three passengers with him.
- John Huston - American actor and film director. Drove into and killed a pedestrian.
- Paul Kelly - American actor. Convicted of beating to death actor Ray Raymond in a fistfight.
- Don King - American boxing promoter. Convicted of stomping to death an employee who owed him $600, in 1966.
- Jayne Mansfield - American actress. While driving to New Orleans for a talk show appearance, she killed her lawyer, other passengers, and herself in a fatal car accident.
- Michael Massee - American actor. Accidentally shot actor Brandon Lee with a prop gun while filming The Crow.
- Vince Neil - Frontman for hair metal band Mötley Crüe, was in a drunk driving accident near Redondo Beach, California in 1984, which killed his passenger, Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley, the drummer of Hanoi Rocks.
- Sid Vicious - Bass player for the British punk band Sex Pistols, is widely suspected to have stabbed his partner Nancy Spungen to death in suicide pact. Died before the case could be brought to trial.
- Varg Vikernes - Frontman for the black metal band Burzum, killed his former friend Øystein Aarseth in 1993. He is also responsible for the death of a firefighter who was attempting to extinguish a fire Vikernes had started in a church.

- Aaron Burr - Killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel.
- Laura Bush - At age 17, was responsible for a fatal automobile collision which killed her boyfriend, the 17 year old driver of the other vehicle.
- Bill Janklow - US Congressman convicted of second degree manslaughter in 2003.
- John F. Kennedy Jr. - Son of President John F. Kennedy, died along with his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her elder sister Lauren Bessette when the private plane he was piloting crashed in 1999.
- Ted Kennedy - Accidentally killed his passenger Mary Jo Kopechne while allegedly driving drunk (See: Chappaquiddick incident).
- Adlai Stevenson - Accidentally shot a 12-year-old friend while handling a loaded .22 caliber rifle on his 13th birthday.

- Jayson Williams - NBA basketball player, who accidentally killed his limo driver while showing off his gun collection.
- Leonard Little - NFL lineman, convicted of involuntary manslaughter in drunk driving accident that killed a 47-year-old woman.

- Jackson Pollock - American abstract expressionist artist, killed himself and a passenger in an automobile accident while driving drunk.
- Orville Wright - Co-inventor of the airplane, accidentally killed the passenger of one of his airplanes he was piloting and crashed.
