In order of population^[1], this is the list of the 56 ethnic groups in China that are officially recognised by the government of the People's Republic of China. The governments of the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, however, do not distinguish between different Chinese ethnic groups.

This is a list of Taiwanese aborigine ethnic groups. The PRC government classifies all of these groups into a single ethnic group, Gaoshan. The Republic of China government in Taiwan officially recognises 12 of these groups. Those that are officially recognise by the ROC government are marked with a "*" in the following list.
