List of common keyboard shortcuts

The following is a list of common keyboard shortcuts in many modern desktop environments, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, GNOME, and KDE.

In the table below, "Co" means the Command key for Mac OS, and the Control key for most other platforms.

Alt-F4 Close Window Close the current window
Co-A Select All Select all items (text, objects, files, etc.)
Co-C or Ctrl-Ins Copy Copy currently selection to clipboard
Co-X or Shift-Del Cut Copy current selection to clipboard and remove from original location
Co-V or Shift-Ins Paste Insert clipboard at cursor
Co-N New Create a new document/window
Co-O Open Open an existing file
Co-P Print Print the current item
Co-W Close File Closes the current file
Co-Z Undo Undo the last action
Co-Y Redo Redo the last action
Esc Cancel Closes the current dialog window, discarding any changes
Alt-Tab Switch Window Shift focus to next window

Alt-Tab Task Switcher/Flip (Windows Vista) Switches between open programs
Win-F Find Opens the Find File dialog or window
Win-M Minimize All Minimize all open windows
Win-Shift-M Undo Minimize all Reverses a Minimize All
Ctrl-Alt-Del Task Manager Starts the Task Manager in Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP
Ctrl-Esc or Windows key Start menu Opens the Start menu
Ctrl-Shift-Esc Task Manager Starts the Task Manager on Windows 2000 and Windows XP
Win-D Show Desktop Minimize all open windows and Dialogue Boxes to show Desktop
Win-L (Windows XP/2003) Lock Desktop Lock the desktop, requiring a password to unlock (if a password has been set). Takes you to the Switch User-screen when Fast User Switching has been enabled (enabled by default in XP).
Win-Break System Properties Opens the System Properties menu
CTRL-'Scroll Wheel' Change IE Font Size Increases or Decreases the Font Size In IE
Shift-'Scroll Wheel' Forward & Back Go Forward & Back In IE

[edit] Mac OS X-specific shortcuts

Option-delete Delete word Delete one word backwards from the cursor.
Option-left/right arrow Move cursor by word. Moves the cursor forward or backward one word at a time.
Cmd- ~ Cycle through windows of current application. Useful in conjunction with Cmd-Tab.
Cmd- + Make text larger.
Cmd- - Make text smaller.
Ctrl-K emacs-style Kill Kill line from cursor to end-of-line into the kill-ring.
Ctrl-Y emacs-style Yank Yank text from the kill-ring.
Cmd-I Get Info In the Finder, get data about a file, folder or a selected group of files.

In ITunes, edit song data.

cmd-up Up one level. In the Finder, opens the containing folder.
Cmd-M Minimize Minimizes the current window into the Dock
Cmd-Option-D Show/Hide Dock Show or hide the Dock
Cmd-Shift-Q Log Out Immediately logs out of the operating system
Ctrl-F1 Enable/Disable Full Keyboard Access Turn on full keyboard access

CTRL+C Cancel Aborts the current program or operation (Unix, DOS, Win)
F3 Recall command Recalls the previous command (DOS, Win)
F7 Command history window Displays a pop up window with a history of recent commands (Win)
ESC Discard command Discards any partial command input and waits for a new command (DOS, Win)
Up/Down Arrows Command history Moves back and forward in the command history (DOS with DOSKey, Win, some Unix)
CTRL-Z EOF Signals end-of-file (DOS, Win)
CTRL-D EOF Signals end-of-file (Unix)
