  • Simona Atzori, Congenital double arm amputee.
  • Doctor Atl (deceased), lost a leg due to disease.
  • William Ernest Henley, poet, lost a foot due to tubercular infection. His best-remembered poem, Invictus, is said to have been written to as an ode to his own resiliency following this loss.
  • Jackie Foster ("Jazzy Jackie") is an amputee artist who creates abstract acrylic paintings on canvas, using her residual finger nubbins as her "tools". Her paintings are stunning and lively. She lost the four fingers on one hand during a childhood accident. She is an autodidactic artist who uses paints as an extension of herself, using what could be considered a disability as an advantage.
  • Big John Wrencher is a Blues singer, (1923 - 1977), lost his arm in a car accident in 1958, a marvelous one-armed singer and harmonica player.
  • Rick Allen, born 11/1/1963, drummer from the rock group Def Leppard, lost his left arm at the shoulder due to an accident with his new Corvette on New Year's Eve, 1984

  • Eddie McGee, winner of the first season of Big Brother, lost a leg due to a childhood illness.
  • Jay J. Armes, Private Investigator, City Council, Actor (Hawaii 5-O)
  • Dagmar Berghoff, German TV-presenter. She was born missing two fingers at her left hand (cleft hand).
  • Bree Walker is a well-known television network news anchor in San Diego, New York City, and Los Angeles. Walker decided to go public with her ectrodactyly, a rare congenital deformity: her fingers and toes are very short, deformed and fused together.

  • Rick Allen, drummer for Def Leppard, lost his left arm in car crash, but continued drumming with his right arm and special machine he operates with his feet.
  • Martin Deschamps, Canadian rock singer, born with left arm and right leg missing, as well as congenital deformities of the other limbs.
  • Ella Fitzgerald (deceased), American blues singer, had both her legs amputated in 1993 due to complications from diabetes.
  • Jerry Garcia (deceased), member of The Grateful Dead, missing half of his right middle finger due to an accident when he was four years old.

  • Paul Wittgenstein, brother of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, lost his right arm in World War I but continued his career as a classical pianist.
  • Liz Pennock can tickle the ivories with the best of them. She'll soon have you singing and swaying to her boogie-woogie blues. All the more unusual because Pennock only has six fingers—three on each hand.

  • Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown (deceased), American baseball pitcher, lost parts of 2 fingers after a farming accident.
  • Shea Cowart, lost her legs below the knee due to meningococcal sepsis.
  • Hugh Daily, one-armed major league baseball pitcher.
  • Dave Dravecky, former Major League pitcher with San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres, cancerous tumor in left arm cut short his career; two years after retiring, the arm had to be amputated.
  • Sandy Dukat, American skiier, had her leg amputated above the knee at age 4.
  • Rudy Fernandez, Filipino triathlete and reality show contestant, lost right leg in a moviehouse explosion in Iloilo City, Philippines in 1978.
  • Steve Fonyo, Canadian marathon runner, lost his left leg due to cancer.
  • Terry Fox (deceased), Canadian marathon runner, lost his right leg due to cancer.

  • Deborah Compagnoni (born June 4, 1970) is an Italian former Alpine skier who won three gold medals at the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics. One day in the hotel kitchen she placed her left hand in a meat grinder, and she was staring at the white nub of bone when she heard her grandmother screaming. They rushed her down the mountain to the hospital. Today her index finger ends where the nail should begin.
