"Wax Lion" Todd Holland and Bryan Fuller Todd Holland March 12, 2004 1AHM79 1
After being passed over for a promotion at her dead-end retail job, Jaye begins hearing voices from a defective wax lion and a brass monkey. Trips to her mother's therapist and the local bar, where she meets the cute new bartender whose wife cheated on him on their honeymoon, do nothing to assure Jaye that she is not going crazy. After a night of verbal harrassment from the Wax Lion, Jaye grudgingly agrees to do what the voices tell her. She arranges a horrible blind date between her sister and Thomas, a lovesick EPS worker. Sharon has no interest in Thomas because, as she reveals to him and Jaye, she is a lesbian, and the date ends in a trip to the hospital when Thomas has an allergic reaction to peanuts. Thomas' ex-wife visits him at the hospital and she and Sharon are immediately attracted to each other. Thomas also finds a new romantic interest in his nurse. Despite the good effects of her actions, Jaye remains unconvinced that she isn't crazy or that the voices aren't evil.

Memorable Quotations

  • "Sweetheart, when was the last time you had an orgasm?" (Darrin)
  • "Your ass is ringing." (Jaye)
  • "You're my sister." "You tell people we're not related." "It was just that one time." (Jaye & Sharon)

Trivia

  • Pickup shots for this episode were filmed six months after the original filming, and these replacement shots are rather obvious because Caroline Dhavernas's face looks thinner and tanner.
  • The actress who appears as Heidi in this episode is not Jewel Staite, who played Heidi later in the series. The production team decided that she looked enough like Jewel Staite that they didn't need to do a pickup shot.
  • The Wax Lion sings "Hello! Ma Baby," which is the theme song of Michigan J. Frog, the spokes-character of The WB.
  • The moment of Sharon struggling to buckle her seatbelt was born out of Katie Finneran, who lives in New York and rarely drives, having problems with the seatbelt.
  • Director/co-creator Todd Holland tried to correct Caroline Dhavernas' pronunciation of "larynx" on the set. He had been mispronouncing it "larn-nyx."
  • Katie Finneran coordinated the effect of getting the ink smear on her chin when she tries to perform a tracheotomy on Thomas with a pen.
  • Kari Matchett wears a brunette wig as Beth because FOX forbade the hiring of another blonde actress.
  • The remnant of Caroline Dhavernas's Canadian accent is apparent in her pronunciation of "proverbial."
  • The left sconce in Jaye's bedroom is off because at the time of the original shooting that light fixture didn't work.
  • Two of the last scenes -- the scene with Sharon and Jaye in Jaye's trailer and the scene between Jaye and Thomas in the gift shop -- were extended at FOX's request to provide more closure.
  • Jeffrey R. Smith provided the uncredited voice of the Brass Monkey.
"Pink Flamingos" Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg Todd Holland April 1, 2004 1AHM01 2
Still trying to ignore the talking inanimate animals, Jaye accidentally runs over her father with his car, breaking his leg. Feeling guilty about her father, Jaye listens to the stuffed fish that tells her to help an annoying high school classmate, Gretchen, plan her high-school reunion. In helping Gretchen with the reunion, Jaye becomes aware of her struggles with her distant husband. When a rooster hair clip tells her to "destroy Gretchen," Jaye defies the chicken and tries to help her, inadvertently causing her husband to have a car accident. Giving into the voice, Jaye "destroys Gretchen" by pouring a drink on her in front of everyone at the reunion, which leads to her having a talk with an admirer from high school in the bathroom. That conversation leads to her realizing that she doesn't love her husband and Gretchen leaves the reunion intending to divorce him and feeling more empowered. Gretchen's husband finds a romantic interest in the woman from the towing company. Meanwhile, Sharon gets stuck taking care of Darrin and his leg, and she slips him some sleeping pills so that she can have a date with Beth. Much to Sharon's surprise, Beth reveals that she isn't a lesbian -- she's bisexual. Sharon isn't quite sure how she feels how that fact. Darrin returns to the hospital for a follow-up visit where he learns that they found a blood clot in his leg that might have killed him.
