Although several English boroughs sometimes are called "royal", there are actually only three boroughs that have legal right to the title "Royal Borough": Kensington and Chelsea, Kingston upon Thames, and Windsor and Maidenhead. They all received this honorary title during or shortly after the reign of Queen Victoria to signify that they had a special standing with the royal family:
