List of The Verve's Urban Hymns B-sides

This list is a list of the songs recorded by British band The Verve during their Urban Hymns sessions from November 1996 until May 1997. The songs listed below never reached the album, but were released as B-sides on singles from the aforementioned album. The songs are sorted alphabetically.

This song was originally recorded in 1994 during the A Northern Soul recording sessions. The song was mainly the 1994 demo, but overdubbed with a new vocal.

[edit] Echo Bass
This was another song which originated from the Northern Soul sessions. There were very little overdubs in this piece, only of a flute and vibraphone. The song was originally 15 minutes long, however it was cut down to under seven minutes.

[edit] Lord I Guess I'll Never Know
The song was in contention for an album spot in the December of 1996. However, after the Christmas break, the band decided to relegate it to a b-side. There is a lot of backward guitar work and the lead guitar plays a tremolo almost all of the way through. The vocal is live, and unmixed.

[edit] Lucky Man (Happiness, More or Less)
The remix was done by guitarist Nick McCabe, who took out all of the intricate guitar parts making the song more "bare". The producers needed extra material for the Lucky Man singles thus this arrangement was used.

[edit] MSG (Music for Driving)
MSG was a remix of Bittersweet Symphony created by producers of the band, Chris Potter and Youth. The original drum and bass recordings were still there, but almost everything else was removed and instead synthesizer parts were added.

[edit] Never Wanna See You Cry
The song was played regularly before Christmas as the band thought it a contender for the album. However, it was never played after the break until May of the following year, when a b-side to Lucky Man was needed. The song was re-arranged and re-recorded in a day.

[edit] So Sister
So Sister is mainly an acoustic song, recorded in one take. It was overdubbed by a xylophone, a backing vocal and a tambourine.

[edit] Stamped
Stamped was another product of a jam session. The jams were often lengthy, one lasting 45 minutes. Only one overdub was used on the song, a distorted guitar.

[edit] The Crab
Another vocal and acoustic song, John Leckie overdubbed some piano and guitar.

[edit] The Longest Day
Another powerful jam, the band rejoined in the October of 1997, a long time after the official sessions had ended to record and mix a new version so that the producers could get extra material for the Lucky Man single discs.

[edit] Three Steps
Also a early contender for the album, the song was mixed from the middle of a lengthy jam held at Metropolis studios. The song received only one overdub, thus maintaining the "live" feel.
