[edit] Pit Stop Notes
- During the first four seasons, teams could arrive at the pit stop at the same time and be "tied". This practice was ended after three teams tied for first place in a leg, each earning a prize. Teams that arrived at the pit stop tied include:
- Blake & Paige and Hope & Norm tied for 4th place in Leg 1 of Season 2.
- Blake & Paige and Shola & Doyin tied for 5th place in Leg 3 of Season 2.
- Tara & Wil and Blake & Paige left the pit stop after Leg 12 of Season 2 tied for first place, even though Blake & Paige arrivied a minute earlier. Tara & Wil were given 1-minute time credit due to a production delay to create the tie.
- Flo & Zach and John Vito & Jill tied for 4th place in Leg 5 of Season 3.
- Millie & Chuck, Steve & Josh and Amanda & Chris arrived tied for 1st in Leg 1 of Season 4, each winning a vacation to Hawaii, and ending the practice of tied teams.
- Aaron & Hayden and Kris & Jon arrived at the pit stop at the same time and in first and second places in Leg 3 of Season 6. The teams played Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine which team would step on the mat first. Aaron & Hayden won and received a seven-night cruise.
- Three teams have been eliminated at locations other than the pit stop.
- Marshall & Lance of Season 5 quit the race during a roadblock due to Marshall's knee injury. They were eliminated at the site of the roadblock.
- Lena & Kristy of Season 6 were unable to complete the roadblock in Leg 3. They were eliminated at the site of the roadblock and were told that the last team had checked in over 2 hours previous.
- Bilal and Sa'eed of Season 10 were the first team eliminated in a planned elimination point mid-leg during Leg 1.
- Two teams have reached the final three but failed to crossed the finish line.
- Joe & Bill of Season 1 fell almost 24 hours behind the leading teams due to cascading events of hours of operation and flight times. The team received a note from a cluebox in Alaska indicating that the race was over (in New York City).
- David & Jeff of Season 4 travelled to a different connecting airport (Sydney) than the other teams (Tokyo). Due the lack of availability of flights, the team fell a day behind and were notified at a route marker in Hawaii that the race was over (in Phoenix, Arizona).
