List of Shrievalties

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of the currently-existing offices of High Sheriffs in England and Wales and in Northern Ireland, along with some minor Sheriffdoms in existence.

The areas covered are the ceremonial counties of England, the preserved counties of Wales, and the administrative counties and county boroughs of Northern Ireland. [1]

High Sheriffs are appointed by The Crown, based on a provided shortlist. [2] [3] The ceremony involves the Queen 'pricking' the names of the selected candidates, a custom dated to Elizabeth I.

In the ceremonial counties that fall wholly or partially within the boundaries of the historic county palatine of Lancaster - Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside (before 1974 the administrative county of Lancashire), a different process is followed. The High Sheriffs are appointed by the Duke of Lancaster (who happens to be the Queen, but she does not act in her capacity as Queen) at a different ceremony [4]. [5] Similarly, in Cornwall, they are appointed by the Duke of Cornwall (currently Prince Charles). [6]

In Scotland the office of Sheriff has remained an actual judicial office. Sheriffs preside over sheriff courts. There is one Sheriff Principal for each of the 6 sheriffdoms in Scotland.
