List of Shenmue characters

The following is a list of major and minor characters from the SEGA video game Shenmue. Only two characters from Shenmue reprise their roles in the sequel, Shenmue II. One of these characters, Shenhua never actually appears in person, although she appears to Ryo in several dreams.

The only playable character in Shenmue is Ryo Hazuki. As the main protagonist, the player assumes control of him throughout as they progress through the game. The supporting cast of Shenmue act to further develop Ryos character and/or progress the narrative. In addition to the main cast, several other incidental characters also appear throughout Shenmue in a variety of locations. They might sometimes provide useful information to the player, or initiate side-quests, but they are generally present only to produce the game's realistic atmosphere.
