Rodney Copperbottom is a robot character from the animated film Robots. He is voiced by Ewan McGregor and is the main protagonist and hero of the film.

Ever since a young 'bot', Rodney dreamed of being an inventor and finally meet his childhood hero Bigweld, "the greatest robot of all"- besides his dad. His first invention, the "Wonder-bot", starts him off, his first attempt wasn't successful as it literally exploded, knowing how much his farther needed help at work he tried Wonderbot with dishs at one point his attempt looked like it succeeded until it smahed the plate against it's head. Eventually Rodney managed to fix most of the glitches and after a brief trail run at the diner that his father works at, his invention goes crazy. Wonderbot was doing a fine job until Mr.Copperbottom's boss, Mr.Gunk, comes in and scares Wonderbot enough to make him stop what he's doing, and drops some dishes which makes them break. After being harshly fired, Rodney decides to leave his home in Rivet Town to go to Robot City, and sell his idea to Bigweld, and make his father proud. However his dreams are halted when Tim wouldn't let him in, not giving up yet he used Wonderbot to fly him into Bigweld's office only to be thrown out by the crazied "replacement", Ratchet. Rodney then meets the Rusties, a group of "outmodes" (an outdated 'bot that is worn out or has broken parts), living in the ghetto.

Though at first it seemed that he was getting nowhere. After fixing Fender's neck he then saw a mob of robots who were angry because of no more spare parts and being unable to afford upgrades, but following his hero's words "see a need, fill a need", he helps out by fixing the outmodes, literalty pulling themselves together. Although Ratchet is not happy as he wants to "exterminate" outmodes in the first place.

Rodney and Fender enter a party disguised to see Mr. Bigweld in person but Ratchet announced that he couldn't attend. Rodney angered by this demanded what happened to him. In the end Cappy brought him out of the party and originally was going to take him to the train station but Rodney demanded that she take him to Bigweld so she did. When Rodney introduced Wonderbot to Bigweld he got a response that wasn't what he was looking for.

When Rodney called his farther to tell him that Bigweld not everything he had hoped for his farther said that a dream that is uncomplete could haunt you for the rest of his life. When Rodney learned Ratchet's intentions he wanted to stop Rachet from what he was doing and he was supported by Mr. Bigweld because Bigweld said that he wanted to grow to be like him.

When Bigweld got amnesia by Ratchet Rodney had to repair him while moving at fast speeds. He also rescued Bigweld from being turned into scrap metal by Ratchet and his mother and by using a dominoe trick Rodney destroyed all the new Sweepers that were going to turn outmodes into scrap metal.

Rodney Copperbottom then eventually became Bigweld's right-hand man for Bigweld industries, Bigweld's eventual successor and Cappy's boyfriend. He gave his father an instrument knowing how much his father always wanted to be a musician.

[edit] Fender

Fender is a robot character that co-stars in the Blue Sky Studios movie Robots. He is voiced by Robin Williams.

Fender first appeared in the movie Robots when he took some pictures of Rodney Copperbottom's first moments in Robot City. Then he tries to scam Rodney by saying that he must buy the photo, he says "That will be 50 bucks."

Fender is made out of a rare metal: “afraidium”, which is “yellow, and tastes like chicken”…

Fender has a "sister" named Piper, whose nerves he always seems to get on.

At one point in the movie a robot mailbox gives some mail to Rodney and then Fender asks if he got any mail and the mailbox robot said that he got something from his sister. The Mailbox puts his hand inside his mouth and the pulls it out and slaps Fender in the face! Fender says, "I recognize the handwriting!".

When Fender was taken to the Chop Shop he had lost his legs. He had put on a replacement only to find out his new legs once belonged to a female robot. With no time to find another replacement he used the new legs to escape the Chop Shop.

By the end of the movie, he becomes good friends with Rodney Copperbottom.

Name When Fender first introduced himself to Rodney, he said his name used to be "Bumper", but that it had to be changed when he entered the country.

His name is probably a spoof of the Futurama character Bender. Fender's name used to be Bumper, but to keep the movie's PG rating it was changed. [citation needed]

[edit] Cappy

Cappy is a robot character from the movie Robots. She is voiced by Halle Berry, and in international versions, she is voiced by Do.

Cappy is a young robot, living in and working in Robot City as one of Bigweld Industries' (only female) co-executives, which is presently run by the evil-twisted robot, Ratchet. Unlike Ratchet and his munipulated associates, she sypathizes with the 'out-modes' as their parts are cut off to make way for Ratchet's new plan. Upon meeting young Rodney, she quickly begins to develop feelings for him and tries to keep him and his friend's out of trouble, especially from Ratchet.

[edit] Bigweld

Bigweld is a robot character from the movie Robots. He is voiced by Mel Brooks.

Bigweld used to be considered "greatest robot of all time" ("besides Mr.Copperbottom" according to Rodney Copperbottom) and had owned a TV show where robots could come and send in ideas for inventions that would make robots' lives better. Rodney Copperbottom loved this show so much that he decided to make an invention of his own called the Wonderbot. But when Rodney gets old enough to travel all the way to Robot City just to show Bigweld Wonderbot, "some jerk" (Ratchet is in Bigwelds' place, while Bigweld has become disillusioned and has allowed Ratchet to control Bigweld Industries.) Tim, a robot jerk who is in charge of the controls of Bigweld's gate, keeps saying that he will let Rodney through the gate, but he is lying. At one point in the movie, Bigweld has amnesia. Bigweld is not what he used to be, and if one looks closely, one can see significant differences between Bigweld in person and Bigweld on his old TV show. Rodney stops Ratchet from putting Outmodes into the Chop Shop, and then Bigweld returns to his old self. He makes Rodney Copperbottom his right-hand man in Bigweld Industries and gives Mr. Copperbottom enough parts to make two of himself. He also gives Diesel a new voice box for him to use.

Bigweld has two main catch phrases that we hear in the movie:

  • "See a need, fill a need."
  • "You can shine no matter what you're made of!"

[edit] Wonderbot

Wonderbot is a speechless and alive invention with a nervous disposition in the movie Robots.

Wonderbot was designed by Rodney Copperbottom to help out with things such as cleaning dishes for Mr.Copperbottom and to help get people to places with its flying ability such as Rodney to Bigweld's company in Robot City. After a brief trial run at the diner that his father works at, his invention goes crazy after Mr. Copperbottom's boss comes in and scares him enough to make him stop what he's doing and drop some dishes which makes them break. After being harshly fired, Rodney decides to leave his home in Rivet Town to go to Robot City and sell his idea to Bigweld to make his father proud. However his dreams are halted when he is thrown out by the crazied replacement, Ratchet, and meets the Rusties, a group of "outmodes" (an outdated robot that is worn or has broken parts), living in the ghetto.

Wonderbot uses body language to communicate. It is also an extremely good dancer.

[edit] Ratchet

Phineas T. Ratchet is the villain from Robots movie, who takes over Bigweld's company, and plans to turn robots into scrap metal. He also gets some help with the guards. Ratchet is voiced by Greg Kinnear.

After reducing Bigweld to not but a retired figurehead, Ratchet rose to head of Bigweld Industries. Using his "new position", he and his conniving mother, Madam Gasket hope to put in play their plans to take over Robot City. Ratchet propagandas the idea that "outmodes" are nothing but scrap metal and that they must have upgrades. When Rodney tries to sell off his ideas, Ratchet rejects him as another lousy inventor. He has an unofficial crush on Cappy, who quitely dislikes the guy.

[edit] Mr. Copperbottom

Mr. Copperbottom is a robot character from the Dreamworks movie Robots. He is voiced by Stanley Tucci.

Known as Rodney Copperbottom's dad and Mrs. Copperbottom's husband, Herb Copperbottom first appeared at the very beginning of the movie as he was shouting "Whoo-hoo!! I'm gonna be a dad! I'm gonna be a dad!" because that was the day Mr. & Mrs.Copperbottom were having a baby (Rodney). Mr. Copperbottom had always wanted to be a musician, although he ended up working at a diner to make his dad proud (because his dad worked at a diner). Mr.Copperbottom's boss' name is Mr. Gunk who disrespects him. In the end Herb removes his dishwashing machine and smashes it on Mr. Gunk's head. His son gave him an instrument to help achieve his dream of becoming a musician.

[edit] Piper

Piper Pinwheeler is a yellow robot character from the movie Robots. She is voiced by Amanda Bynes.

Piper is Fender (the co-star in Robots)'s sister. Fender appears to get on her nerves a lot, so one time she even mailed Fender a smack in the face! She first appears when Fender is blaming something wrong on Rodney Copperbottom, and she ends up having a crush on Rodney, especially since she even called him cutesie.

[edit] Aunt Fanny

Aunt Fanny is a pink robot (voiced by Jennifer Coolidge), who is very nice to the other robots and takes care of them. Her name is based on how big her behind is - Rodney once asked why her name was Aunt Fanny, and Fender replied "Well, we couldn't call her Aunt Booty." Aunt Fanny appears to have a crush on Bigweld, and Bigweld also seems to have a crush on her. In the UK, however, her name is changed to Aunt Fan because 'Fanny' is slang for female genitalia.

[edit] Tim

Tim is a robot character from the movie Robots. He is voiced by Paul Giamatti.

Tim is a robot that is in charge of the controls of the gate of Bigweld Industries. At one point in the movie, he tricked Rodney Copperbottom into thinking he would let him in the gate, shutting it (multiple times, as he continued to lie) right before he entered.

At the Bigweld Ball, a party that goes on every year at Bigweld Industries, Rodney and Fender weren't on the list but Tim let them in anyway, because Fender and Rodney tricked him into thinkning that Rodney was a count.

At another point in the movie, at the end of the Bigweld Ball, two security robots were chasing Fender, Rodney, and Cappy and as Fender, Cappy, and Rodney ran out of Bigweld Industries as they were being chased, Rodney shouted: "Hey, Tim! I'd like to see Mr.Bigweld!", so that way Tim would close the gate before the two security robots could escape to chase Rodney, Fender, and Cappy some more.

At the end of the movie, Wonderbot flies up and kicks Tim.

In the beginning of the movie, as Rodney watches Bigweld's show, Tim is part of the dialogue in the beginning, which essentially had him mistakenly have the gate closed when it's supposed to be open for all the world to see. It is apparent in the movie that Tim resents his role on the show.

[edit] Crank

Crank Casey (known to his friends as Crank) is an orange robot character from the movie Robots. He is voiced by Drew Carey. Staying true to his name, he is constantly complaining about various problems.

He'd much prefer the easy way out, which to him involves sitting around waiting for the worst to happen, and complaining when it does.

A pessimist, Crank is one of the many robots Rodney Copperbottom meets on his journey to Robot City. He lives with Aunt Fanny as well as Fender, Piper, Lug, & some Diesel. He helps find voice/sound chips for Diesel.

[edit] Lug

Lug is a large green robot character from the movie Robots. He is voiced by Harland Williams. His main problem with scavenging for parts comes in the fact that he can never find parts in his size. Later in hte movie, he is converted into a professional wrestler robot with ninja characteristics in order to fight evil robots.

Lug is one of the many robots Rodney Copperbottom meets on his journey to Robot City. He is tooken care of Aunt Fanny as well as Fender, Piper, Crank, & Diesel. He helps find voice/sound chips for Diesel. He also looks for parts that can come in his size and he moans that he can never find parts in his size.

[edit] Diesel

Diesel is a blue robot character in the movie Robots.

Not much is known about this blue robot, except that he can't talk and needs voice/sound chips that make noises come out of his mouth. His personality changes to suit the voicebox he is currently using. He and his friends have often looked for voice boxes that he could use. They weren't successful in getting one for him in the junkyards. In a shop he tests one which sounds like and makes him make a strong reference to Darth Vader from Star Wars by saying "The force is strong with this one". In the end Diesel gets a brand new voice box from Bigweld.

[edit] Lydia Copperbottom

Mrs. Copperbottom is a robot character from the Dreamworks movie Robots.

Lydia is the mother of Rodney Copperbottom and wife of Mr. Copperbottom. She is unemployed and very kindhearted. Lydia's voice is unkoun.

[edit] Mr.Gunk

Mr.Gunk is a robot character from the Dreamworks movie Robots. He is voiced by Dan Hedaya.

Mr.Gunk is the boss of the diner that Mr.Copperbottom works at. He is very strict and bossy. In the end of the film Mr. Gunk got a washing machine smashed onto his head by Mr.Copperbottom.

[edit] Loretta

Loretta Geargrinder is a female robot character from the 20th Century Fox movie Robots. She is voiced by Natasha Lyonne.

Loretta is a good-looking, pink girl that Fender meets at a party called the Bigweld Ball. After the party both Fender and Loretta asked if they could meet each other sometime. She is also the receptionist at Bigweld Industries.

[edit] Mr.Gasket

Mr.Gasket is a robot character from the movie Robots. He is voiced by Lowell Ganz. In the UK version of the film, he is voiced by Terry Wogan

Husband of Madame Gasket and Ratchet's father, Mr. Gasket was once hung upside-down by Madame Gasket. at the end of the movie, Ratchet got hung upside-down next to Mr.Gasket and had lost his upgrades, although Mr.Gasket tried to cheer Ratchet up by saying one of Bigweld (Ratchet's rival)'s catch phrases: "You can shine no matter what you're made of!" Before he can finish Ratchet tells him to shut up.
