List of Phoenix Wright characters
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phoenix Wright (成歩堂 龍一 Naruhodō Ryūichi?) Age 24
The protagonist, known for his trademark spiky hairdo. He has only been an attorney for three months and before episode 1 has never been in court. He is bright but very inexperienced. His nickname to some of his friends is "Nick" and sometimes "porcupine head" to his enemies. Phoenix is generally cynical, although sometimes quite clumsy, but in a flashback scenario in Gyakuten Saiban 3, we see that when Phoenix was in University, he was very devoted to a woman he considered his "soulmate", even acting irrationally a number of times to defend her. Oddly enough, though he was interested in law even then, he was an art major. He is confirmed to be the first defendant in Gyakuten Saiban 4 and seems to have given up his career as a defense attorney to work at a bar playing the piano, though he tends to make more money playing poker with the customers.
Mia Fey (綾里 千尋 Ayasato Chihiro?) Age 27
A highly competent lawyer and Phoenix's boss and mentor. Her first meeting with him was as her second case acting as his defense lawyer, with him being on trial for murder. He was impressed with her constant belief in his innocence, and vowed to work hard for her sake. She tragically meets her end in the second case of the game, but even after death, she continues to provide help and guidance to Phoenix, by channeling her spirit through her sister Maya. Her mother, Misty Fey, was double-crossed by Redd White in a case many years ago. Mia became an attorney with the sole intention of one day putting White behind bars. She is extremely professional and calculating, but friendly and warm towards Phoenix. She often saves Phoenix at the eleventh hour, though on rare occasions even she gets stumped. Mia once worked for Marvin Grossberg, with him acting as her mentor.
Detective Dick Gumshoe (糸鋸圭介 Itonokogiri Keisuke?) Age 30
Dick Gumshoe is a police detective from the homicide division. Hot-headed and overzealous at times, he is often known to make wrongful arrests. He holds a deep respect for Miles Edgeworth, almost to the point of hero worship. Gumshoe also has a habit of interrupting conversations at inappropriate moments. He tends to be gullible, brash and definitely isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but he means well.
Maya Fey (綾里 真宵 Ayasato Mayoi?) Age 17
Mia's little sister, Wright's assistant, and a medium-in-training. She can channel her big sister's spirit into her body for a limited amount of time, via a method similar to possession, but can only do so in desperate situations. Otherwises, she is like any teenage girl and is fan of Tokusatsu shows and films, particularly The Steel Samurai. Maya is usually kind and sweet, though she has a tendency to overreact and has a strong love of food, often saying she has a "second stomach" for foods she likes. She seems to treat Phoenix in the same way as she did with her older sister.
Miles Edgeworth (御剣 怜侍 Mitsurugi Reiji?) Age 24
Wright's rival, he became a prosecutor at the age of twenty and has been called a "genius" by many. Cold and calculating, he will use any means necessary to get a guilty verdict, and has rumors surrounding him regarding the use of forged evidence and tampered testimonies. He, Phoenix, and Larry Butz were once friends in grade school. Edgeworth is the prosecutor in Chapters 2, 3, and 5. He is the defendant in Chapter 4.
His name and age are unknown. Curiously, he happens to preside over almost all of Phoenix's trials, as well as Mia's. He has a reputation for changing his decision on proceedings several times, earning him the nickname "The Fickle-Hearted Judge". He often needs to have evidence explained to him, sometimes has no idea what he's talking about and is often affected by other people in the court. However, he always manages to make the right decision in the end, also giving the nickname "The Mysterious Perfect Judge".
Winston Payne (亜内 武文 Auchi Takefumi?) Age 52
Known in legal circles as "The Rookie Crusher", Payne is mild-mannered, becomes easily flustered, and lacks the mercilessness of most prosecutors. Prior to the events in Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney, he was arrogant and highly condescending to "rookie" defense attorneys, but lost his confidence (as well as much of his hair) after being defeated in court by Mia Fey in the first case of Gyakuten Saiban 3, which takes place before the first game. He is the first prosecutor in every game in the series.
Manfred von Karma (狩魔 豪 Karuma Gō?) Age 65
Edgeworth's old mentor, von Karma is at least ten times more ruthless and deranged than Edgeworth himself, and will object to just about anything. The prosecutor in "Turnabout Goodbyes", von Karma has been awarded the "King of Prosecutors" award several times. In all his arrogance, he often manages to have an intimidating influence on even the judge, sometimes even known to "sustain" his own objections prematurely.
Larry Butz (矢張政志 Yahari Masashi?) Age 23
Larry has been Phoenix's friend ever since they were in elementary school. A born troublemaker ("If something smells, it's usually the Butz.") and the defendant in "The First Turnabout", as well as a witness in "Turnabout Goodbyes". Not much is known about him, however, he's generally quite emotional, and somehow manages to date models, even if they don't seem to think much of him.
Frank Sahwit (山野星雄 Yamano Hoshio?) Age 36
Frank Sahwit is the murderer of Larry's girlfriend when she caught him stealing from her home. Framing Larry, he becomes the witness in the case. Many of the statements in his testimonies contradict evidence or pre-stated information, and after a while he starts getting worried and nervous. Eventually, he gets angry and throws his toupee onto Phoenix's face while having what seems like a mental breakdown. He also has a mole on his forehead.
April May (松竹梅世 Umeyo Shōchiku?) Age 23
April May is Redd White's secretary, and is responsible for wiretapping Mia Fey in the second case, "Turnabout Sisters". She's very girlish and naive, but has a darker, more dangerous side. She rented a room in the hotel next door to the Fey Law Offices, and eyewitnesses the crime.
Marvin Grossberg (星影宇宙ノ介 Soranosuke Hoshikage?) Age 64
A stuffy, overweight defense attorney who is in charge of the Grossberg Criminal Defense law firm. He is a very famous and well-known lawyer and was once Mia Fey's mentor. He is a very busy man, therefore he is rarely seen at his office. Grossberg often talks about his youth and the past.
Grossberg was involved in the DL-6 Incident case. He sold the information of Mia's mother, Misty Fey, to the press and as a result, she was publicly called a fraud. Redd White used this information to blackmail Grossberg, to the extent of which he has been paying White for 15 years.
Redd White (小中大 Konaka Masaru?) Age 39
The CEO of Bluecorp, which is, essentially, a blackmail company. He leaked to the press the police's use of a spirit medium, Misty Fey, in the DL-6 trial, discrediting her and her spiritual powers. He paid Marvin Grossberg money for that information and when the police started looking for the person who leaked the information, he then blackmailed Grossberg for the next 15 years. Grossberg gave Redd the painting that was found in Grossberg's office as a part of his payment to Redd. Misty Fey's daughter, Mia, devoted her life to putting Redd behind bars, collecting any amount of information that could be connected to Redd, including newspaper articles detailing people who committed suicide because they couldn't stand being blackmailed anymore.
Redd's Japanese name means "Small, Medium, Large." The American version uses colors instead of sizes (Redd White of the Blue Corporation). Redd constantly makes up words (such as "splendiferious") and misuses random Spanish phrases. In Gyakuten Saiban 1, Masaru Konaka uses English words, having just returned from a trip to the United States. Bluecorp is called "KonaCulture" in the Japanese version.
Redd White's localized name may be a reference to the original Japanese game: red and white are Japan's national colors, and when blue is added ("BlueCorp") they become America's national colors. This draws a parallel with Masaru Konaka's obsession with American culture.
Ema Skye (宝月 茜 Hōzuki Akane?) Age 16
Ema is a high school junior and Phoenix's assistant during "Rise from the Ashes". She is the younger sister of Chief Prosecutor Lana Skye and has hopes of becoming a scientific investigator. Ema is enthusiastic, sometimes almost overly so. However, her scientific methods often come in handy, especially when searching for blood stains or fingerprint. Her parents passed away when she was young.
Lana Skye (宝月 巴 Hōzuki Tomoe?) Age 29
Lana Skye is the Chief Prosecutor for the district, however, she used to be a detective working alongside Damon Gant. She was transferred after the SL-9 Incident. She treats everyone coldly, including her younger sister Ema. Lana and Ema's parents passed away when Lana was a teenager, and Lana raised Ema. Lana is the defendant of Case 5 and is accused for the murder of Detective Bruce Goodman. Strangely, she admits to killing him straight off the bat. As with many of the characters in Case 5, she was deeply involved in the mysterious SL-9 Incident.
Angel Starr (市ノ谷響華 Ichinotani Kyōka?) Age 31
Angel Starr is a lunchlady at the prosecutors' office. Also a former detective, known as the "Cough-Up Queen". She worked alongside both Jake and Neil Marshall on the SL-9 Incident case. She makes frequent metaphors based on cooking or food, and hands out varying degrees of lunches to people depending on her opinion of them. She has many different boyfriends in important places, who she uses to get information from, or to get things done for her. Her mood shifts from pleasant to hateful, depending on which side of her face her bangs are covering.
Mike Meekins (原灰 ススム Susumu Harabai?) Age 22
Mike Meekins is an accident-prone police officer. He's klutzy, unreliable, and not too bright, yet loyal to a fault. His superiors hold him in low regard for fairly obvious reasons. Meekins' naive and klutzy nature comes into play in Case 5, when he's falsely accused of the second murder of Bruce Goodman. In fact, during his testimony he convinces himself that he actually did commit the murder, and "confesses," but neither the prosecution nor the defense seem to take him very seriously.
When Phoenix Wright meets him, he describes Meekins quite accurately by inwardly musing that he was "last in line when they were handing out the brains and luck."
Jake Marshall (罪門恭介 Zaimon Kyōsuke?) Age 33
Jake Marshall is a former detective who thinks he's a cowboy. His speech is full of references to the Old West and various stereotypical cowboy terminology, and he wears a cowboy hat, bandanna, and poncho over his patrolman's uniform. He loves steak. His place of origin is a mystery, although Detective Gumshoe says he's from West L.A.. He refers to Texas as if it were his home, yet at the same time, says that he only picked up the Texas-talk and cowboy attitude from seeing a special about the old west "the other day." Still, his strange mannerisms are much older than that, and also shared by his sibling: both Jake and his brother are shown two years previous in cowboy gear as they are today. His younger brother, Neil Marshall, was a top prosecutor, and was one of the victims reported in the SL-9 Incident.
Damon Gant (巌徒 海慈 Ganto Kaiji?) Age 65
Damon Gant is the Chief of Police. He is notably eccentric, both in appearance and behavior. To most, he's a kindhearted, easily amused man, although if challenged, he can show a very dark side. He wears an orange business jacket, a black dress shirt, a red cross-shaped tie, leather gloves, and pink-lens glasses. He has a habit of clapping and laughing loudly, sometimes at inappropriate moments, as well as fiddling with his hair while people are talking to him. He calls people by diminutive nicknames (e.g. Edgeworth — "Worthy", Wright — "Wrighto", the judge — "Udgey").
Gant has a penchant for swimming and commonly asks if people have been swimming recently. He mainly asks this question to people in authority, probably with the intent of either loosening them up with his charm, or frustrating those who are speaking seriously. Either way, personal deflation is one of Gant's main tactics in any discussion.
Franziska von Karma (狩魔 冥 Karuma Mei?) Age 18
One of the two characters introduced in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All. She is the daughter of Manfred von Karma who wishes to avenge the von Karma name. She is the main prosecutor of the second game. She carries a whip.
Pearl Fey (綾里 春美 Ayasato Harumi?) Age 8
The second character introduced in the second game. She is Maya's kid cousin and knows about "Psyche-Locks." She is a vegetarian.
Godot (ゴドー Godō?)
The main prosecutor of Gyakuten Saiban 3. Wears an electronic visor and seems to be addicted to coffee.
