[edit] Cities

When giving names to the cities in Kanto, the translators chose to name the cities after colors; hence, Pewter City, Viridian City, Saffron City and so on.

[edit] Fuchsia City

Fuchsia City (セキチクシティ or Sekichiku City in Japanese) is the southernmost city on the Kanto mainland, far to the south of Celadon City, and is adjacent to the Safari Zone. Residents of Fuchsia City include Safari Zone owner Warden Slowpoke, the grandfather of Bill (the inventor of the Pokémon PC), and the local Gym Leaders Koga and Janine.

Koga is the Fuchsia City Gym Leader in Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Fire Red, and Leaf Green, as well as in the Pokémon anime and in Pokémon Adventures. He is replaced by his daughter, Janine, in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Whichever of the two is in charge of the Gym, the Gym's interior is a confusing maze of invisible walls, supplemented with mirrors and pit traps in the anime.

In the video games, Fuchsia City is also noted as the only place to catch Gyarados in the wild, and as the first place in which the player can purchase Ultra Balls, the best Poké Balls that can be bought in the games. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, it is also home of the Move Deleter, who has the ability to make Pokémon unlearn any move, including HMs.

[edit] Pallet Town

Pallet Town (マサラタウン or Masara Town in Japanese) is the hometown of the protagonists of Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, as well as Ash Ketchum, the protagonist of the Pokémon anime, and Red of Pokémon Adventures. It is also the home of Professor Oak, who gets them started with their first Pokémon, as well as Professor Oak's son (the player-named rival, Gary Oak, or Blue, depending on whether one is referring to the games, the anime, or Pokémon Adventures, respectively.)

In the video games, Pallet Town is a fairly tiny village situated south of Viridian City and north of Cinnabar Island. It has only three buildings: the protagonist's home, the Oak residence (home to Professor Oak, the rival, and the rival's sister), and Professor Oak's laboratory. Even in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, while the protagonist and rival of Pokémon Red and Blue have grown up into respected Pokémon trainers, they still live at home in Pallet Town.

In the anime, Pallet is a bit larger and more populous, with Professor Oak's laboratory situated on a hill overlooking the town. Ash Ketchum lives there, with his mother, Delia, and he returns there at the end of each saga of the anime. A number of episodes of Pokémon Chronicles are also set there.

[edit] Cerulean City

Cerulean City (ハナダシティ or Hanada City in Japanese) is the third city visited in the Kanto region by the protagonist, and the second gym match venue. Cerulean city has feautered in the Pokémon Red & Blue, Pokémon Gold & Silver and Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen games.

Cerulean city is named after the colour Cerulean, an azure blue. Its Gym Leader is Misty, a Water-type trainer, who is in charge of a swimming pool-style arena.

[edit] Viridian City

Viridian City (トキワシティ or Tokiwa City in Japanese) is the first major city the player visits in Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Yellow. When the player first arrives, the gym is locked. However, here, the player can deliver a package to Professor Oak, and when it is delivered, the player will get the Pokédex. Also, it has the first Pokémon Centers and Pokémarts found in the game. Once the player defeats the other seven trainers, they can challenge Giovanni, the gym leader.

[edit] Saffron City

Saffron City (ヤマブキシティ or Yamabuki City in Japanese) is home to "The Copycat", "Mr. Psychic", a Fighting Dojo, a gym and Silph Co.'s main office. When one first arrives, Team Rocket has taken over and the only places one can access are the Fighting Dojo, the houses and Silph Co.'s office. It is also the largest city in Kanto, and appears as a stage in Super Smash Bros.

[edit] Cinnabar Island

Cinnabar Island is home to a laboratory and an old, abandoned mansion. One can go to the laboratory to trade some Pokémon and identify the fossils found in Pewter City and Mt. Moon. There are also some trainers and diaries in the mansion, with brief information on Mewtwo's creation. Wild Pokémon also live in the mansion. To open the gym, one must retrieve a key from the mansion.

[edit] Celadon City

Celadon City (タマムシシティ or Tamamushi City in Japanese) is the second largest city in Kanto. It is home to a department store (the largest Pokémart in Kanto), a hotel (which has an invisible PC in the Game Boy games), a casino and a mansion. At the mansion, the player can get a certificate for completing their Pokédex and some tea, which gives the player access to Saffron City.

[edit] Lavender Town

Lavender Town's only key location is the Pokémon Tower, which is the only place where one can catch a Gastly. Notably, there is a ghost guarding the staircase to the top floor, which can only be defeated if the player has a Silph Scope.

[edit] Other Locations

[edit] Safari Zone

The Safari Zone is a wide-open area in Fuchsia City where the player can purchase thirty Safari Balls and play a game, giving them 500 steps to catch Pokémon. However, the player is not allowed to use any Pokémon of their own, and instead, they can throw Safari Balls, food and rocks. Rocks increase the chance of the Pokémon fleeing, but increases the chance of catching it, while food is exactly the opposite. Notably, this is the sole place where a player can catch several types of Pokémon, including Chansey, Tauros and others. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the player has 600 steps.

[edit] Viridian Woods

[edit] Celadon Game Corner

The casino in Celedon City. The player can play slot machines and earn coins to exchange for prizes such as TMs or a Pokèmon next door. In Red/Blue/Yellow/FireRed/LeafGreen, there is a Team Rocket member guarding a switch behind a poster that leads to a basement hideout for the organization.
