Jean Michel Jarre's first concert, held on 14th July 1979, celebrating the Bastille Day. One million spectators attended this concert, setting up a new record for Guinness Book of Records. A rare VHS and single with tracks proposed as concert tracks were released.

[edit] The Concerts in China

Jarre was invited to be the first Western Musician to perform concerts in post-Mao China. A tour with estimated 120,000 spectators was held in China, 2 times in Beijing and 3 times in Shanghai during autumn 1981. Due to the low sound quality recorded, the tracks were enhanced when a double-LP of the concert was released. In 1989, a VHS with clips from the concerts was released.

Jarre was invited by the city of Houston to celebrate the birthdays of the state, city and NASA in 1986. 1.5 million people attended the concert on April 5, 1986, breaking his own record in the process. A live album called In Concert, including tracks from both this and the Lyon venue later in the year, was released the next year, as well as a concert VHS.

The visit of Pope John Paul II to Jarre's hometown of Lyon was celebrated by this event held on October 5, 1986, gathering over 800,000 spectators. A concert VHS of the concert was released later, and many of the concert's tracks were used in the In Concert live album.

[edit] Destination Docklands

A total of 200,000 people attended the concerts held on October 8 and 9, 1988, in the Docklands region of London, to coincide with the release of Jarre's new album Revolutions. Accompanied by heavy wind, rain and fireworks, the concert also featured The Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin who joined Jarre on the tracks "London Kid" and "Fourth Rendez-Vous". A live album and a VHS were released afterwards.

This concert, celebrating the Bastille Day in 1990, was attended by 2.5 million spectators across the city of Paris and set a new Guiness Book of Records entry for Jarre. The show featured new tracks from the Waiting for Cousteau album, and a VHS cassette of the concert was released in 1992.

To celebrate the sale of 100 million Swatches, Jarre held two concerts in the Swiss village of Zermatt on September 25 and 26 1992. 200,000 people attended the concerts. The new track "Une Alarme Qui Swingue" evolved and was released as Chronologie 4.

Jarre was invited to the inaugural celebrations of the Palace of the Lost City, a hotel located within the Sun City resort in South Africa. Three concerts were held on December 1, 2 and 3 1992. Each concert was attended by 15,000 people.

Jarre held a tour of huge outdoor concerts throughout Europe in 1993 after the release of the Chronologie album, starting in Mt. Saint Michel, France and ending in Tours, France. In total 700,000 people attended the venues, and a VHS of the Barcelona concert was released. Tracks from several concerts of the tour were used for the Hong Kong album.

Jarre was invited to the opening of a new stadium in Hong Kong on March 11, 1994, attended by 40,000 people. A live album called Hong Kong was released later in the year, even though most of the tracks were taken from the Europe in Concert tour.

On July 14, 1995, Jarre held a concert in front of the Eiffel Tower, celebrating the Bastille Day, UNESCO's 50th birthday and UNESCO'S proclaimed year of tolerance. One million people attended this concert, from which a laserdisc was released.

In 1997, Jarre held an indoor tour in Europe dedicated to his continuation of the Oxygène album, Oxygène 7-13, starting in Toulon, France and ending in Orléans, France. In total, 230,000 people attended the concerts.

Jarre was invited for a concert celebrating the 850th birthday of Moscow. His largest concert up-to-date, with 3,5 million people attending, was held on September 6, 1997. A VHS was released in the USA in 1998 and a DVD was released in Brazil in 2000.

Jarre was accompanied by various artists like Apollo 440 and Tetsuya "TK" Komoro celebrating the Bastille Day of 1998 and the French victory on World Cup 1998 just days before, with 600,000 people attending the concert. A VHS concert video titled 'Paris Live "Rendez-Vous 98 Electronic Night"' was released in Japan as part of the 'TK 1998 Latest Works Tetsuya Komoro' boxset.

Jarre was invited to hold a concert celebrating the New Millennium nearby the Giza pyramids in Egypt starting on December 31, 1999 and carrying overnight to January 1, 2000. 120,000 people attended the event, from which an official DVD release was planned but cancelled due to problems at the concert, such as fog obscuring the view of projections on the side of the Pyramids. Parts of the concert were broadcast live on TV stations around the world.

On the release date of his new album, Jarre played a showcase concert at dance club Man Ray, in Paris, on January 31, 2000, attended by 300-400 people.

For the 1st day of 2001, Jarre teamed up with Tetsuya "TK" Komuro and writer Arthur C. Clarke to celebrate the beginning of the 21st Century on Okinawa, Japan, with 20,000 attending. A purported intention to release the new compositions didn't come to fruition, as the band formed by Jarre and Komuro became short-lived. Some of those themes were incorporated by Jarre in other releases and also by Pierre Palmade.

On June 19 and 20 2001, Jarre played two concerts at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to raise money for the Greek organization Elpida, with 15,000 people attending in total. A new composition, Akropolis, was later used at the Beijing & Poland concerts under new titles. The second concert was broadcast live on French radio NRJ and on French TV channel M6, for which one track had to be dropped due to time constraints, and is available for rebroadcast.

The organizers of this annual festival invited Jarre to take part in one of their events in 2002. 100 people attended the event where Jarre performed totally new tracks as well as revisiting an old track. In 2006, music from the concert was released as an online album sold exclusively through iTunes.

Jarre held a very muddy concert at the outskirts near the city of Aalborg in Denmark, on September 7, 2002, with 35,000 spectators. Danish band Safri Duo featured on the track 'Aero', which in fact was Bourges 2 from the performance earlier that year and Rendez-Vous 4. The concert was broadcast live on various TV stations around the world and a shortened one-hour version was made available for rebroadcast.

Kicking off the Year of France celebrations in China, Jarre performed two back-to-back concerts in Beijing, China, first at the Forbidden City and then at Tiananmen Square, on October 10, 2004. 15,000 selected people plus some who bought tickets attended the concerts which featured local Chinese musicians and marked the first 5.1 concert by Jarre. A DVD set called Jarre in China was released in 2005 including the full concerts and various extras. The concerts were broadcast by Chinese TV station CCTV for the whole world by HDTV satellite. A shortened one-hour version was made available for rebroadcast.

Jarre held two mini-concerts on August 6 and 7 2005 at the Sporting Monte-Carlo Casino, Monaco as part of the Casino's Summer Festival. 1,500 and 1,100 people attended the concerts.

Jarre was invited by Lech Wałęsa to hold a concert celebrating the 25th birthday of the Solidarity movement in Poland. On August 26, 2005, 170,000 people attended the paid-ticket event. It got a DVD release in December 2005 called "Solidarność Live".
