[edit] Notes
- From 1964-1970, the Indianapolis 500 was shown live on closed-circuit television in theatres and other similar venues across the United States. All live closed circuit broadcasts were anchored by Charlie Brockman.
- [1]From 1965-1970, ABC televised either filmed or taped recorded highlights of the race the following Saturday on Wide World of Sports from 1965-1970. Jim McKay called most of those races while Chris Economaki was the pit reporter. Rodger Ward served as color commentator for some of the years.
- [2]From 1971 to 1985, the Indianapolis 500 was shown on a same-day delay basis. It was also blacked out in the Indianapolis market. 1986 marked the first time that the race was to be broadcast live. The beginning was delayed on consecutive days by rain and was postponed to that Saturday.
- [3]In 1997, a rain storm pushed all pre-race activities from Sunday to Monday, Memorial Day. On the 15th lap, the race was red flagged because of developing rain, which would eventually postpone the race for the day. The 500 was ultimately completed the day after. In addition, Bobby Unser (turn 2) and Danny Sullivan (turn 4) served was turn lap-by-lap announcers.
