Hexagram 33 is named 遯 (dun4), "Retiring". Other variations include "retreat" and "yielding". Its inner trigram is ☶ (艮 gen4) bound = (山) mountain, and its outer trigram is ☰ (乾 qian2) force = (天) heaven.

1 Darkening of the light. He lowers his wings. He finds difficulties and does not eat for three days. Stay on track, but beware of difficulties. The correct path is not always the easiest or most popular.
2 Hiding brightness. He is injured in the thigh. Even so, he gives aid to others and acts according to duty.
3 Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south. Explore disorder to conquer it. However do not deal too harshly with disorder which has been the standard for a long time. Change must be gradual.
4 He enters the left belly of darkness. He sees the true nature and understands that which is obtainable and that which must be avoided.
5 Brightness hiding. As a member of the royal family, Prince Chi was a virtual prisoner in the court of the evil emperor, Chou Hsin. The prince survived by concealing his disaproval of the emperor. Although he was a prisoner, he looked inward for peace and solice. The emperor was unable to harm him.
6 Not light but darkness. First he climbed to heaven then he plunged to earth. Evil will consume itself.
