Hugh O'Neill was an Irish patriot who trained Immortals Annie Devlin and Liam O'Rourke and made them the fanatical terrorists that they came up to be. In 1990, Hugh met and fell in love with a mortal woman named Mary Margaret O'Connell. Mary Margaret was later recruited as Annie Devlin's Watcher after the death of Hugh O'Neill at the hands of an Immortal named Chang in 1993. Both O'Neill's pupils were, curiously, beheaded by Duncan MacLeod. Devlin was killed in 1996 and two years later it was O'Rourke's turn to loose his head.
