List of Gungrave Episodes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gungrave anime is made up of 26 episodes. The plot progresses continuously through all the episodes, giving it the qualities of a serial. However, although the series isn't 'episodic', most episodes do have their own self-contained stories i.e. in the second episode Harry, Brandon and Jason set out to help their gang-member, Kenny. But this only leads to a new problematic that must be overcome in the next episode. This takes place throughout the series (apart from of course the final episode).
The majority of the episode titles are one word long, using a words that 'sums up' the idea of the episode. The exceptions are when a single word is insufficient to explain the episode's plot. These include "Young Dogs", "Big Daddy", "5 Years Later", and "Last Bullet". Another exception is the first and last episodes. Their title cards use Japanese kanji to spell out "Destroyer in the Dusk" and "Dusk of the Destroyer".
[edit] 黄昏の破壊者 (Destroyer in the Dusk)
"Were we wrong? Did we make the wrong decision after all? I can’t seem to remember when things started to take a turn for the worse. In the end it turned out like this. Still…"
On a snowy night on a bridge Beyond the Grave is awakened as he takes in hand his twin handguns, the Cerberus, to take on the Orgmen - zombie-like creatures that threaten the two people that have just revived him, Dr. T and Mika. When the group escape and hide out in a desolate part of the city, the truth is revealed; Grave was once Brandon Heat, a Sweeper for the criminal organization Millennion that is now hunting Mika. Their leader 'Bloody' Harry MacDowell has also killed Mika's mother.
After the disturbance caused by Grave, a meeting takes place at Millennion Head-Quarters amongst the Millennion leadership - including 'Bloody' Harry. They discuss who could have possibly destroyed so many of their Prototype Orgmen and clues only point to an event from 15 years ago...
As Beyond the Grave wanders off Mika follows, and Grave struggles with his memories. When they arrive at a small cemetery, the two are ambushed by Millenion agents and some four-legged spider-like Orgmen which Grave easily defeats. After being shot in the back to protect Mika, Grave confronts an Orgman that expands in muscle mass ten-fold. When Dr. T arrives, and provides reenforcement in the form of a giant metal coffin, and Grave destroys the Orgman in a shower of bullets from his new weapon.
Back at Millennion HQ, Harry is informed of the outcome of this attack and is given the last captured image from the giant Orgman and recognizes Grave as Brandon Heat. After the revelation that Brandon has returned Harry threatens to destroy him all over again.
[edit] Young Dogs
"A city of destruction. A place where you live with death everyday. There’s no future there, no hope, and yet I was fine. Back then I had no problem with that."
Whilst a young Brandon Heat is doing chin-ups on a girder, fellow gang member Kenny returns to the hideout with an expensive looking jewel pendant. Gang leader Harry MacDowell, reminds him that something that expensive is obviously stolen and he'd never get anyone to buy it off him. Kenny becomes distraught, not helped by Jolice, the groups cook, mocking him. Brandon then offers to buy the pendant to give to his sweet heart, Maria, until Harry talks him out of it and tries to get his money back. Nathan crashes in claiming that rival gang leader, Deed, is getting his boys together - so the whole group set of to confront Deed's gang, with Kenny boasting with his "gun".
Elsewhere, Maria has just got out of school and meets with a friend, until her Uncle Jester pulls up in his pick-up truck to take her home to make sure that she doesn't run into trouble with "guys like that", gesturing towards Brandon and the gang fighting Deed's mob. At the fight, Brandon, Harry and the others have beaten up most of Deed's group. Deed then pulls out a gun. Brandon confronts Deed on his own and takes him out, and the rest of Deed's his gang flee. After the fight, whilst talking, the subject moves to Deed's older brother, Mad Dog Ladd, and the conflicting stories as to his whereabouts.
When Nathan and Brandon return to their den, after paying off Descartes, the local crime boss, they find Maria waiting there. Meanwhile outside Deeds hideout, a car pulls up and a tall shadowy figure emerges. The man then reveals himself to be Deed’s brother - the infamous “Mad Dog” Ladd. Later on he agrees to helping him, even though he thinks otherwise. Maria and Brandon have left the den to talk. She tells him that she can help him live an honest life, but it seems Brandon’s friends mean much more to him. As police sirens scream in the streets, Brandon takes her home.
Just then a black car stops outside Maria’s house, and out steps a black suited man with orange sunglasses and white hair and beard who rings the doorbell. Jester replies thinking it’s Maria but is surprised to find this familiar man who reveals he has come to deliver a message from Big Daddy. Elsewhere Kenny is walking through the streets and finds Scott, the local informant. As Kenny threatens him for setting him up with that pendant, Scott warns him that “Milandsa’s” guys are after him, and a car appears chasing Kenny who is caught. Back at Jester’s house the man in black leaves and Jester sees Maria returning home with Brandon. Not approving, he takes Maria back inside. At their den, Brandon looks at the pendant, thinking about Maria. Nathan then barges in, proclaiming that Kenny’s been caught by Milanda. After fretting about what to do, Brandon suggests returning the stolen jewellery and the three set off, leaving Jolice behind.
As it begines to rain, they arrive at Milanda’s place finding Kenny on the floor with men around him pointing guns at him. Harry, Brandon and Nathen then barge in, having beaten the guard. As Harry returns the necklace, and others his “services”, Milanda leaves, but not before telling her men to deal with them - and the four are beaten in the streets. After complaining about it, they worry about Brandon who hasn’t said anything thing, who then sits up giving his friends the thumbs-up. At the den, Jolice is preparing dinner, the door opens and, as he anticipates his buddies, finds Ladd at the door. Expecting the whole group would be there, he makes the most of his visit. “Mad Dog” then raises his pistol and fires.
The gang return home, but only to find their companion dead on the floor.
[edit] Rain
"All of a sudden he was gone, leaving nothing but a vague memory. Now it's raining on places where there is no freedom. Raining endlessly, as if it will was our lives away."
After discovering their friend’s murder, Harry and the gang assume that whoever did it was after ‘’them’’ instead of Jolace and decide to run away, taking refuge in the sewer. The next morning, police are investigating the murder at gangs old den, which Jesters drives past, watching in disbelief. Meanwhile, Deed starts bragging about the state his rivals are in, but his brother Ladd Carabel reminds him how hopeless he was against them in the first. Ladd then puts a handgun on the table and tells his younger brother to deal with them himself, leaving to take care of his own business.
Later, Harry meets ‘Scott the Snitch’ in an alley, and follows him into a corridor in an apartment building. Scott informs him that ‘Mad Dog’ Ladd has returned, and he’s a member of the mafia - not to mention that he’s after Harry and the others. Then Deed’s guys step out of the surrounding rooms and chase Harry as he makes his escape. Elsewhere, an agent talks to the man in black with the orange glasses. It is revealed that he is looking for Ladd and orders his operative to continue the search. When Harry returns to the groups new hide-away in the sewer he is badly beaten and tells them how Scott has betrayed them, and that Deed’s brother, Ladd is back in town.
Later in the evening, Ladd enters a research facility, killing the guard on duty and all the scientists in the lab - all but one, a Dr. Tokioka. Ladd requests that the remaining doctor come with him, after ignoring previous invitations to his organisation, a group called Lightning. The doctor admits defeat, and is put in the back of a car which drives off. On that rainy night, whilst everyone’s asleep, a restless Brandon gets up to leave, but is stopped by Harry who has woken up. After philosophising on their present situation, a weak Harry fails to stay awake, and Brandon leaves. As he runs through the street, Deed’s henchmen spot him and follow him so they can tell their boss. Back at the research laboratory, the white-haired man in black sees the state left by Ladd, and tells his agent to report it to Big Daddy.
Meanwhile, at Jester’s house, Jester sees Brandon on the street corner outside when closing the curtain. He then retrieves a handgun hidden in a shoebox and steps outside, prompting Brandon to follow him. He then lectures Brandon about the life he’s chosen and how he must take responsibility for it, making it clear that he doesn’t want Maria to be involved with such a lifestyle. He gives him some money and tells him to leave town, and to forget about Maria, stating that he can only cause her unhappiness. In a flashback, a younger Jester fires his gun and is distraught about killing a crying baby’s mother – that baby being Maria, who he adopted. After the flashback, Jester hands his gun towards Brandon telling him to take it and “survive”, for his ‘’and’’ Maria’s sake. Just then, a car pulls up in front of them and out steps Deed.
Deed has got out the gun that his brother gave him and points it at Brandon. Just as he’s about to shoot, Jest fires ‘’his’’ gun and a gunshot rings out along with a crash of thunder. Having shot Deed’s gun out of his hand, he tells him to leave and fires three more warning shots at his feet leaving Deed no option but to retreat. As he turns to Brandon, he states he was putting his past “to good use.” With that Jester is shot in the back and collapses in the young man’s arms leaving a terrified Brandon staring at the blood on his hands. There, ‘Mad Dog’ Ladd reveals himself. As Jester says his final words Brandon is left in disbelief, ignoring the words of Ladd who kicks him across the street. Just then, Harry, Nathan and Kenny arrive saving Brandon from further torture. As Harry apologizes, Deed relentlessly shoots Brandon in the arm. In defence Nathan takes Kenny’s gun. When he goes to fire, nothing happens. He realises that Kenny’s gun was just a toy resulting in Ladd shooting him dead. Kenny leans over with buddy and says how all along he tried to warn him that the gun was a fake, and for wasting his time Ladd subsequently shoots at and kills Kenny.
With just Harry and Brandon left, the man in black comes to their rescue. Ladd recognises him as Bear Walken, a top Sweeper for the Millennion Organisation. The Millnenion Executive closes the eyes of his old friend, Jester. A gunfight breaks out between Bear Walken and Ladd Carabel, with Bear proving his skill and quickly taking out his foe. He throws his gun towards Harry and Brandon who are watching in fear, so that they might take revenge for their comrades’ deaths. Ladd attempts to grab the gun, Bear finishes him off with a 2-shot derringer-style handgun. He then leaves to see to Maria, commenting on the two remaining petty thugs as helpless brats. As the rain and thunder worsen, Harry lays he’s sight on the thrown gun lying on the ground.
At Deeds hideout, Harry, with Brandon and Bear’s gun, scorns him as he becomes hysterical. Harry MacDowell then states that he will not take, but give him death. As Brandon turns to him in shock, his best friend has already pulled the trigger.
