List of Final Fantasy X-2 characters
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
|
The following is a list of major and minor characters from the Square Enix role-playing video game Final Fantasy X-2. See also "List of Final Fantasy X characters."
All characters in the game belong to one of the six sentient races available in the world of Spira: the Ronso, the Hypello, the Guado, the Al Bhed, humans, and Musicians (native to Macalania Woods). Among regular humans there appears to be a small subgroup of people of short stature formed by Tobli and others like him. They are not only smaller than the majority of regular humans, but also wear a distinctive long-beaked mask accompanied by equally distinctive clothing, which may indicate them to be part of another branch of humans in Spira altogether. As of this time, however, this has yet to confirmed.
Several Final Fantasy X-2 characters fall into the category of the unsent—departed souls who have remained in the physical plane due to a powerful connection to the world of the living, either in the form of an unfinished task or a bond with a certain person or idea. A large part of the main plot deals with the Gullwings' encounters with Shuyin and Lenne, a pair of unsent lovers separated after their deaths, and the reactions they—particularly Shuyin—have had as a result of this.
[edit] Playable characters
Nicknamed "YRP" (ユリパ YuRiPa?) for their initials, these three girls make up the playable team of Final Fantasy X-2:
- Yuna (ユウナ Yūna?): Became the final high summoner following her defeat of Sin in Final Fantasy X. Born in Bevelle, Yuna was raised on Besaid Island by the local villagers after her father's death. Default dressphere: Gunner. (img)
- Rikku (リュック Ryukku?): Daughter of Cid, the leader of the Al Bhed in Final Fantasy X, and Yuna's first cousin. She served as one of Yuna's guardians on the pilgrimage to Zanarkand. Default dressphere: Thief. (img)
- Paine (パイン Pain?): Originally a recorder for the Crimson Squad training operation, now a sphere hunter with the Gullwings. Default dressphere: Warrior. (img)
[edit] Non-playable characters
[edit] Gullwings
The Gullwings (カモメ団 Kamome Dan?, lit. "Seagull Group") are a group of sphere hunters, consisting of Yuna, Rikku, Paine and several others:
- Brother (アニキ Aniki?): Rikku's older brother, and the self-proclaimed leader of the Gullwings. He is also its founder and the main pilot of the airship Celsius.[1] He has unrequited romantic love for his cousin Yuna, who is oblivious to his feelings, leaving him constantly torn between expressing this and keeping it hidden. Sometime after the Eternal Calm's arrival, Brother and Cid parted ways under ill terms, which gave Brother the opportunity to expand his horizons. Brother named his airship "the Celsius" in a direct contrast to Cid's Fahrenheit airship from Final Fantasy X, a name that was never revealed in the English versions of the game. Also, in an secret scene Buddy tells Yuna how he and Brother came upon the ship. They were exploring the cold ice waters north of Zanarkand and found her sitting on the water. Because of the cold they named it Celsius and named the team Gullwings, after the gullwing that lead them to the ship, which they ate afterwards cause they were starving. (img)
- Buddy (ダチ Dachi?, shortening of "tomodachi," Japanese for "friend"): Old friend of Brother, co-pilot of the Celsius, and co-founder of the Gullwings along with Brother. His level-headedness contrasts sharply with Brother's manic behavior. The player mostly interacts with him when choosing destinations for the airship. (img)
- Shinra (シンラ君 Shinra-kun?): A young Al Bhed who works aboard the Celsius. A technological prodigy, he is responsible for the creation of the dressphere system and many other technical innovations. He also takes every opportunity to remind the others of how much they depend on his inventions. After the events of FFX2, Shinra left the Gullwings to aid Rin in researching the Farplane's abundant energy source and the technology Vegnagun has to utilize that energy.
It has been stated in the official texts of Final Fantasy X Ultimania and Final Fantasy VII Ultimania that this Shinra's name was not just chosen as a homage to the Shinra of FFVII (see ref ) (img)
- Barkeep (マスター Masutā?, lit. "Master"): A Hypello originally picked up as a hitchhiker, he now works aboard the Celsius. (img)
[edit] Leblanc Syndicate
The Leblanc Syndicate (ルブラン一味 Ruburan Ichimi?) is a group of sphere hunters who serve as the rivals of the Gullwings. The syndicate employs its own mercenary legion to aid and guard its members on sphere hunting expeditions. Many of its members were either former Yevonites, Al Bhed deserters, and Crusaders thought to have died.
- Leblanc (ルブラン Ruburan?): The leader of the Leblanc Syndicate, she has a not-so-secret infatuation with Mevyn Nooj, which sometimes brings out her more sensitive side. Many of her subordinates owe her for helping them out.
- Ormi, or Uno (ウノー Unō?) : Professional lackey, first for Yevon, and now for Leblanc. He uses a large shield as a weapon. His Japanese name means "Right Brain."
- Logos, or Sano (サノー Sanō?) in the original Japanese: Another of Leblanc's hired helpers, he formerly worked for Yevon with Ormi. He seems to have a thing for recording naughty spheres, though he denys it. He wields a pair of twin revolvers as his weapons. His Japanese name means "Left Brain".
[edit] Youth League
The Youth League (青年同盟 Seinen Dōmei?) is a political/military organization which emerged in the wake of Sin's defeat and whose members advocate radical reform of the Spiran social, religious, and political systems. Its progressive attitude has attracted many former Crusaders and younger citizens of Spira to its ranks; although a proactive organization, its demographic makeup has earned its members a reputation as hot-headed and reckless.
- Meyvn Nooj (ヌージ Nūji?): A former Crusader known for his fearlessness in battle, and now the leader of the Youth League, Nooj suffered massive damage to the left side of his body in a battle against Sin, including the loss of his left arm and leg. These lost limbs were subsequently replaced with machina prosthetics and Nooj came to be known as "Nooj the Undying." Though highly respected and admired by his peers, Nooj had a great deal of difficulty adjusting to his mechanical limbs and was called a "Deathseeker" due to his suicidal tendencies in battle and reckless disregard for his own life. As a Crimson Squad candidate, Nooj had been close friends with Paine, Gippal, and Baralai until the day of the group's final exercise.[2][3] In the Den of Woe beneath Mushroom Rock Road, Nooj was possessed by the malicious spirit of Shuyin and was later forced to shoot his comrades, an act of apparent treachery that left deep wounds in the friendship they'd once shared.[4] In the time that followed, with Shuyin subconsciously driving him, Nooj would begin working to uncover the temples of Yevon's buried secrets in the hopes that he may locate and destroy the massive machina weapon known as "Vegnagun." Two years later, after Shuyin left Nooj for a more useful body, during the final battles of Final Fantasy X-2, Nooj and his one time friends would be at last reconciled, joining forces with the Gullwings and the Leblanc Syndicate in final battle with Shuyin and Vegnagun. (img)
- Lucil (ルチル Ruchiru?): Captain of the Djose Chocobo Knights from Final Fantasy X, she is now the commander of the Youth League forces as Nooj's right-hand woman. After Nooj pursed Baralai into the Farplane, Lucil was forced to assumed full command though she still considered Nooj as her leader. (img)
- Elma (エルマ Eruma?): Lucil's partner from Final Fantasy X (img). She is a member of the Youth League, and has been promoted to the position of captain. (img)
- Yaibal (ヤイバル Yaibaru?): A somewhat overeager recent recruit of the Youth League who is continually trying to solicit Yuna's support for the organization. He first appeared in Final Fantasy X: Another Story, a video epilogue to the International version of Final Fantasy X. (Note: Yaibal's likeness is used by several NPCs in Final Fantasy X, including the fayth of the aeon Ifrit.) (img)
- Maroda (マローダ Marōda?): Guardian and younger brother of ex-summoner Isaaru from Final Fantasy X, he is a member of the Youth League. (img)
- Dona (ドナ Dona?): Yuna's rival summoner from Final Fantasy X, she is another member of the Youth League. (img)
- Beclem (ベクレム Bekuremu?): A captain of the Youth League who is assigned to oversee the Besaid Aurochs' training after they join the League. A terse, practical-minded man, he disapproves of what he views as the people's unnecessary dwelling upon the legacy of the summoners and the old Yevon traditions.[5] It is later revealed that he once fought alongside Wakka's brother Chappu with the Crusaders.[6] (Note: Beclem's likeness is used by several NPC characters in Final Fantasy X, including the fayth of the aeon Yojimbo.) (img) (img)
[edit] New Yevon Party
The New Yevon Party (新エボン党 Shin Ebon Tō?) is a conservative group led by Praetor Baralai. Inspired by the now-defunct Yevon religion and founded by Trema, New Yevon promises to make up for their predecessor's transgressions by providing a source of support for those who feel overwhelmed by the rapid changes sweeping Spira. Their motto is "One thing at a time", believing that a slow evolution of Spira's customs is the only way to prevent complete anarchy. Following the forced resignation of the New Yevon chairman who replaced the absent Trema, New Yevon is run by a committee of younger members.[7][8] The faction is opposed by the Youth League, led by Nooj. This causes some tension later in the game, when the player must decide to give an item of historical significance to one group or the other.
- Praetor Baralai (バラライ Bararai?): Former Crimson Squad candidate along with Nooj and Gippal, and Praetor of New Yevon after the previous Preator and his father were banished from New Yevon after abusing their power, the young man named "Baralai" worked his way into his position in order to learn more about Vegnagun. Baralai and his former Crimson Squad comrades had seen visions of the massive machina during their fateful final field exercise, a tragedy which lead to the severing of their friendship and trust in one another after the spirit of Shuyin possessed Nooj and forced him to shoot his friends.[2][3][4] A sphere recording that can be obtained by the player displays a link with Final Fantasy X, revealing that Baralai went to Seymour Guado for aid and protection after his parting from his former comrades.[9] Ultimately, Baralai's malice for Nooj made him easy for Shuyin to possess once he no longer needed Nooj. But with the aid of YRP and his old comrades, Baralai was released from Shuyins hold and regain their friendship and trust in his former comrades, with the intend of joining forces to plan a better future for Spira. (img)
- Trema (トレマ Torema?): The founder of the Seekers, the first sphere hunter group in Spira, Trema later founded the New Yevon Party and led it for its first year until he mysteriously disappeared after collecting a large cache of spheres from Spira's past and refused to show anyone, even the members of New Yevon itself.[10]. Late in Final Fantasy X-2, it was revealed that Trema enter the Via Infinito dungeon under Bevelle, where he destroyed the spheres he gathered and remained there since. Due to his unique power of controlling the strongest Fiends, in was questioned if Trema was Unsent before he even entered the Via Inifito. After destroying Paragon in the bottom of the dungeon, Trema fought YRP personally before he was defeated and deaparted. (img)
- Isaaru (イサール Isāru?): Yuna's fellow summoner from Final Fantasy X, he is now a tour guide of the Zanarkand ruins, which have been turned into a tourist attraction. He eventually returned to Bevelle and uphold order there in Baralai's place. (img)
- Barthello (バルテロ Barutero?): Dona's guardian and lover, he is a member of New Yevon. Because they support opposing factions, their relationship soured, and they are not on good terms by the start of the game. Though they were on different sides, Barthello was still bent on protecting Dona as her guardian. The player's actions over the course of the game can reunite them, however. Barthello's yells overloaded the Com-Spheres Shinra left in Kilika. (img)
[edit] Machine Faction
A third organization, the Machine Faction (マキナ派 Makina Ha?), prefers to avoid involvement in Spiran politics, but its awesome military firepower inevitably makes it a relevant party in the growing conflict between the Youth League and New Yevon. The members of the exclusively Al Bhed Machine Faction are pioneers of machina research, which was formerly banned during the reign of the Yevon church. They term their new creations "machines" instead. (Note that the title of "machina" is still used in the Japanese version of the game.)
- Gippal (ギップル Gippuru?): Former Crimson Squad candidate and founder of the Machine Faction,[11] the Al Bhed known as "Gippal" once served with Nooj and Baralai during their Crimson Squad candidacy, and forged a powerful friendship with his comrades, including their recorder, Paine.[2][3] Sadly, this friendship was shattered on the day of their final candidate exercise. After watching the other Crimson Squad candidates brutally murder one another under the influence of Shuyin's despair and malice, Gippal, Baralai, and Paine were shot by Nooj who had been possessed by Shuyin himself.[4] Gippal would then dedicate himself to learning all he could about machina in the hopes that he could use this information to subdue or destroy the behemoth machina Vegnagun, which had long laid hidden beneath Bevelle. Gippal and his former comrades would later reuinite and work together to save Spira from Shuyin. It is implied by Gippal that he and Rikku were once romantically involved. Judging by Rikku's response, however, it is possible that Gippal was joking around, although Paine says that the opposite is probably true, given that Rikku is so defensive about it.[12] (img)
- Nhadala (ナーダラ Nādara?): Machine Faction official in charge of the Bikanel Desert excavation. (img)
[edit] Other characters
- Benzo (ベンゾ?): Interpreter for the Cactuar Nation. (img)
- Braska (ブラスカ Burasuka?): A deceased high summoner, Braska is also Yuna's father. Yuna was only four years old when Braska was widowed by Sin,[13] prompting him to dedicate the rest of his life to bringing the next Calm. During Final Fantasy X-2, Braska, along with his former guardians Jecht and Auron, gives Yuna advice and encouragements during the final battles with Shuyin and Vegnagun. (img)
- Wakka (ワッカ?): One of Yuna's guardians and the former captain of the Besaid Aurochs from Final Fantasy X, he currently resides in Besaid with his wife, Lulu. (img)
- Lulu (ルールー Rūrū?): One of Yuna's guardians from Final Fantasy X; now married to Wakka and carrying their child. (img)
- Vidina: Wakka and Lulu's newborn son, Vidina, is born toward the end of the game. "Vidina" means "future" in Al Bhed. He was given the name Inami, which is also Al Bhed for "future" in the Japanese version of the Al Bhed language. (img)
- Rin (リン?): An Al Bhed travel agent entrepreneur from Final Fantasy X, he is also the creator of a new game called "Sphere Break", which is now one of the primary sources of entertainment in Spira during the blitzball off-season. But, Rin has a much darker side to him in terms of Machina being the future and the Farplane energy as he revealed when Yuna pointed him as the one behind the Mihhen Highroad machina attack. (img)
- Clasko (クラスコ Kurasuko?): Formerly a member of the Crusaders' Chocobo Knights, he has now taken up Chocobo breeding and is hard at work building his own chocobo farm in the Calm Lands. (img)
- Tobli (トーブリ Tōburi?): An event organiser who uses twice as many words to say half as much, Tobli's often in need of assistance in organizing entertainment productions along the Moonflow. (img)
- Bayra: A harp-playing bird-like spirit in Macalania Woods. (img)
- Donga: A drum-playing spirit in Macalania Woods who speaks in a thick Scottish accent. (img)
- Pukutak: A small horn-playing spirit in Macalania Woods who only speaks in rhymes. (img)
- Tromell (トワメル Towameru?): A Guado who served as vizier to Maesters Jyscal and Seymour Guado, he is currently the de facto leader of the Guado race and is trying to restore their relations with the rest of Spira following Seymour's manipulation of the Yevon religion and his brutal slaughter of most of the Ronso. (img)
- O'aka XXIII: A freelance merchant from Final Fantasy X who bought the Lake Macalania travel agency from Rin. However, the nearby Macalania Temple sank to the bottom of the lake immediately afterward, taking his business with it. With few travelers now passing through the area, O'aka spends his days evading the Al Bhed loan agents to whom he is in debt. (img)
- Kimahri Ronso (キマリ=ロンゾ Kimari-Ronzo?): One of Yuna's guardians from Final Fantasy X, he is now the elder of the Ronso tribe and is working hard to unite his people. He also seeks to foster a positive relationship between the Ronso and the Guado following his people's massacre at the hands of Seymour in Final Fantasy X. (img)
- Garik: A member of the Ronso Tribe who constantly challenges Kimahri's authority and insists on making the Guado pay for their crimes. The character's name is a likely reference to Garik "Face" Loran of the Star Wars X-Wing Wraith Squadron novels, as it is a trait of the Final Fantasy games to pay homage to Star Wars characters. Every Final Fantasy game has characters named Biggs and Wedge (on X-2 they are on a Blitzball team) after the X-Wing characters on Star Wars.
- Pacce, Taro, and Hana: Formerly a guardian to his older brother, the summoner Isaaru, Pacce is now the leader of his own band of would-be sphere hunters, the Kinderguardians.
- Cid (シド Shido?): Rikku and Brother's father, as well as Yuna's uncle, he was the leader of the Al Bhed in Final Fantasy X. In Final Fantasy X-2, he is responsible for converting Zanarkand into a tourist attraction. (img)
- The Besaid Aurochs (ビサイド・オーラカ Bisaido Ōraka?): Besaid's Blitzball team. Members include Datto, Botta, Keepa, Letty and Jassu. They are now members of the Youth League, not to mention a now formidable team in blitzball. (img)
- Shelinda (シェリンダ Sherinda?): Shelinda was an acolyte of the temples in Final Fantasy X, but left the clergy as Yevon disintegrated. She is now working as a journalist in Luca. (img)
- Calli (ヒクリ Hikuri?): The little girl that Yuna and her guardians met on the Mi'ihen Highroad in Final Fantasy X who eagerly awaited the coming of Yuna's Calm,[14] she's currently obsessed with Chocobos. Depending on the player's actions, she may end up traveling on the airship along with the Gullwings. In the event that this comes to pass, she develops a crush on Brother because his hair reminds her of a Chocobo's feathers. (img)
- Lian and Ayde: Two young Ronso who left Mt. Gagazet in search of a way to fix Kimahri's broken horn. (img)
- Maechen : An elderly itinerant Spiran historian from Final Fantasy X, he is revealed as an unsent in Final Fantasy X who lived in the days before Zanarkand was destroyed and witnessed the rise of Sin and the Yevon religion firsthand. Though he eventually died of old age, he remained so engrossed in his studies that he eventually forgot that he was actually unsent. His memories of his time in Zanarkand were rekindled when he shook Yuna's hand, as Yuna's handshake was identical to that of Lenne as a consequence of her equipping the Songstress Dressphere. Also, as per the contents of the Black Mage Dressphere, it is indicated that he was also once a Black Mage. The one whose memories were recorded into the sphere refers to how marvelous it was to shake "her" hand, and in an accent similar to Maechen's. (img)
- Shuyin (シューイン Shūin?): A native of Zanarkand who lived during the age of the Machina War between Zanarkand and Bevelle. The lover of the songstress-summoner Lenne, he refused to accept her fate when she was ordered to the front lines—from which she would most certainly not return — and attempted to commandeer Bevelle's machina weapon, Vegnagun, in the hopes of using it to end the war and save Lenne. Tragically, both Shuyin and his love were gunned down in front of Vegnagun after she prevented him from using it to take many lives for her sake. Sealed within the Den of Woes, Shuyin's unsent spirit—filled with despair and self-loathing, but without the ability to fade away and be free of his suffering[15]—desires to destroy all of Spira in the hopes that his agony may be able to end and that there can never again be a war like the one that cost him and Lenne their lives. Upon first seeing him in the sphere Kimahri found on Gagazet that began her new adventure, Yuna mistook him for her lost love, Tidus, due to their striking physical resemblances to one another; the resemblance is due to Tidus possibly being the dream fashioned after the real Zanarkand Blitzball player. Unlike other Unsent, Shuyin can possess people, controlling those who are deep in malice as he is. He can also possess Fayth, using their Aeons to help him. He was eventually defeated and shortly reunited with Lenne as they faded.
- Lenne (レン Ren?): A famous singer-summoner from Zanarkand during the age of the Machina War, and Shuyin's lover. She was forced to the front lines to fight along with the other summoners in the city. Both she and Shuyin expected that the hopelessly overpowered Zanarkand would fall and that she would die in battle. Thus, Shuyin would attempt using Bevelle's machina weapon, Vegnagun, to defeat Bevelle and save her life. However, she was unwilling to allow him to take the lives of many others for her sake, and asked him to stop just as he was about to make of use the behemoth machina. He consented to her request, but the two were not shown the same mercy by their oppressors, and were promptly gunned down by Bevelle soldiers. Upon her death, her spirit was somewhow crystalized into the Songstress Dressphere, which contains her memories. Although Yuna wears a costume identical to Lenne's when wearing the songstress outfit, it is emphasized through various means that they are two separate souls and that Yuna is not Lenne's reincarnation or descendant,[16] as is often mistakenly believed among the fandom. After Shuyin was defeated, Lenne separated herself from Yuna and finally faded with Shuyin, thanking Yuna for helping her. (img)
