Listed in order of appearance
Cecil Harvey Japanese name: Cecil Harvey (セシル・ハーヴィ Seshiru Hāvi?) |
||
Orphaned at a young age, Cecil is taken in by King Baron and raised as a Dark Knight. Eventually he is promoted to the command of Baron's airship fleet, the "Red Wings". When the King orders Cecil to rob the magical town of Mysidia of its Water Crystal, Cecil begins to question his king's morality in issuing the order. After bombing the village of Mist under the king's orders, he forms an alliance of warriors to discover the true intentions of the King. This quest eventually leads him to climb Mount Ordeals after washing ashore near Mysidia, becoming a paladin in the process. Cecil ultimately learns that he is the son of a Lunarian, KluYa, and that Golbez is his brother. Cecil initially cannot accept that fact, but just before Golbez leaves forever, he calls him his brother. Cecil marries Rosa and becomes King of Baron; Cagnazzo had killed and impersonated the previous king. |
Kain Highwind Japanese name: Cain Highwind (カイン・ハイウィンド Kain Haiwindo?) |
||
Childhood friend to both Cecil and Rosa, Kain is the leader of the Dragon Knights of Baron. He claims that being a dragoon makes him feel closer to his father, who died when Kain was very young (and may have been Ricard Highwind from FFII.) Though Kain, like Cecil, notices King Baron's unusually harsh behavior, he strangely aligns himself with the evil King and Golbez instead of joining Cecil's rebellion. Kain, in fact, becomes the right-hand-man of Golbez — the mysterious sorcerer who takes Cecil's place as captain of the Red Wings. This only happens because Golbez controls him at this point. Kain breaks free of Golbez's mind control after Tellah casts Meteor, but is seized again after Cecil claims the last Dark Crystal. When Zemus's mind control of Golbez breaks, Kain is no longer controlled. After the final battle, Kain decides to test himself before he can consider himself worthy to see Cecil again. Due to this, he decides not to attend Cecil and Rosa's wedding. |
Rosa Farrell Japanese name: Rosa Farrell (ローザ・ファレル Rōza Fareru?) |
||
Cecil's beloved, Rosa is a white mage and archer of Baron. Experienced in healing magic, Rosa is often busy attending to Baronian soldiers who were wounded in battle. She has always hoped to fight alongside Cecil, just as her mother fought alongside her father, another Dark Knight. When Rosa learns of the King's cruel intentions, she immediately leaves Baron in search of Cecil, catching the deadly desert fever in the process. Cecil cures her with the Sand Ruby, and she joins his party. During the battle of Fabul, she attempts to save Cecil from Kain, but Golbez kidnaps her and has the Earth Crystal as her ransom. Golbez tricks Cecil into bringing the Crystal, but Tellah weakens Golbez, and Golbez, seeing something in Cecil, possibly that he is his brother, retreats. Cecil saves Rosa in time, and she helps them escape after defeating the Lord of Wind, Barbariccia. She stays in the party for the rest of the game, and marries Cecil, becoming queen of Baron in the process. |
Cid Pollendina Japanese name: Cid Pollendina (シド・ポレンディーナ Shido Porendīna?) |
||
The chief engineer of Baron, Cid is very close to Cecil, Kain, and Rosa. Since the loss of his wife, Cid has especially treated Cecil like his own son. Having discovered the ancient skill of levitation, Cid is credited with inventing the airship. After discovering that Cecil has been relieved of his position in Baron's fleet, the furious Cid is locked away in the dungeon by King Baron (actually the Lord of Water, Cagnazzo). Later, however, he gives Cecil access to his special airship, the Enterprise. When the Enterprise crashes in the Underworld, Cid takes it back to the surface to outfit it with silver foil, which enables it to fly over magma. Cid rescues Cecil from the collapsing bridge to the Tower of Babel, and attempts to escape a pursuing Red Wings airship. He ultimately jumps off the ship at the crater and detonates explosives to seal the Underworld; this is thought to have killed him, but he returns to add Silver Foil and a drill to the newly acquired Falcon, and deploys the Red Wings against the Giant of Babel. |
Rydia Japanese name: Rydia (リディア Ridia?) |
||
Due to her innocence and pure heart, Rydia is one of the most powerful summoners in the entire village. When Cecil and Kain trek through the Mist Cave to reach Rydia's village, they kill the Mist Dragon that was summoned to protect the path. Because monsters are linked to their Summoners, Cecil and Kain actually kills Rydia's mother in the process. On top of this, they set the entire village ablaze with the Bomb Ring, which automatically erupted the moment they enter Mist. Rydia becomes enraged and attacks them, causing an earthquake that separates Cecil and Kain. Cecil takes the unconscious Rydia to Kaipo; when she regains her senses, she initially cannot forgive him, but agrees to join him after he defeats some soldiers who want to kill her. Rydia is swallowed by Leviathan, and grows older in the Land of Summons, due to time passing more quickly there. Having mastered summoning at the expense of white magic, she saves Cecil from Golbez's Shadow Dragon in the Dwarven Castle's Crystal room and rejoins the party. She returns to the Land of Summons in the end, and it is apparent that Edge is infatuated with her. |
Tellah Japanese name: Tella (テラ Tera?) |
||
Tellah was once the wisest Sage in Mysidia and master of all spells. After a drastic accident while casting a spell, Tellah retired to Kaipo and refrained from using magic, eventually forgetting most of his spells. After the death of his wife, Tellah became very over-protective of his only daughter Anna, and becomes furious when learning of her engagement to the "spoony bard" Edward of Damcyan. He accompanies Cecil to Damcyan to find Edward, and initially blames and scorns Edward. However, after several events, such as the fact that Anna sacrificed herself for Edward, and when Edward plays his Twin Harp to weaken the Dark Elf, Tellah's perception of Edward improves. Tellah also seeks vengeance on Golbez for killing Anna, and acquires the spell Meteor for this end. He uses Meteor at the cost of his own life, weakening Golbez, and freeing Kain. He expresses regret over being consumed by vengeance in the last moments of his life. Mysidian mages idolize Tellah, often working all their lives to obtain the wisdom he once had. |
Edward Chris von Muir Japanese name: Gilbart Chris von Muir (ギルバート・クリス・フォン・ミューア Girubāto Kurisu fon Myūa?) [1] |
||
Edward is the prince of Damcyan, soon to become the seventh king of the region. Edward grew up very mild-mannered in his royal family. Though expected to be an expert in business, Edward shows much more interest in music and became a bard. When Golbez's Red Wings attack Damcyan and kill Edward's beloved Anna, Edward joins Cecil in his opposition against King Baron and Golbez. Edward falls overboard when Leviathan attacks Cecil's ship to Baron, and is tended to in Troia. From his room, he plays the Twin Harp, sending a melody to the Dark Elf, weakening it and dispelling the magnetic field that rendered metallic weapons useless, enabling Cecil to defeat the Dark Elf. He joins the airship fleet against the Giant of Babel, and helps to rebuild Damcyan after Zeromus's defeat. |
Yang Fang Leiden Japanese name: Yang Fang Leiden (ヤン・ファン・ライデン Yan Fan Raiden?) |
||
The composed leader of the monks of Fabul, Yang is an undisputed expert in martial arts. Despite his superiority over the other Fabul monks, Yang remains dignified and does not bask in his glory. When training on Mt. Hobs, he and his fellow monks were attacked by a group of monsters. Yang emerged as the only survivor, but receives help from Cecil and Edward when protecting Fabul from Golbez's attack. He finds his way to Baron after Leviathan attacks the ship that he chartered, and attacks Cecil before regaining his memories. In the Tower of Babel's cannon room, he sacrifices himself to prevent the cannon from destroying the dwarven tanks, but resurfaces in the Sylvan cave, unconscious. He wakes up when the player strikes him with a frying pan, but cannot assist the player. He, however, gets in a tank in order to stop the Giant of Babel from destroying the world. Afterwards, he becomes king of Fabul. |
Porom Japanese name: Porom (ポロム Poromu?) |
||
Palom and Porom are two fraternal twins from the village of mages — Mysidia. Porom, the girl, is sweet, polite, and is studying white magic. Though the twins are only six years old, they are experts in their respective magic skills and are sent by the Elder of Mysidia to help Cecil on his journey to the top of Mt. Ordeals. They were as much spies as companions, which Palom almost admits as the Elder did not trust Cecil yet. They turn themselves to stone to save Cecil and his friends from being crushed in Cagnazzo's trap, which, as it was self-inflicted, cannot be undone by healing magic. The Elder, however, ends their curse, and after they assist the efforts against the Giant of Babel, the resume their studies in Mysidia, with Porom working to rein in Palom. |
Palom Japanese name: Palom (パロム Paromu?) |
||
Palom and Porom are fraternal twins from the village of mages — Mysidia. Palom, the boy, is a rowdy, immature, and rude Black Mage; . The Elder, however, ends their curse, and after they assist the efforts against the Giant of Babel, the resume their studies in Mysidia (despite Palom's occasional absenteeism). |
Edward "Edge" Geraldine Japanese name: Edward "Edge" Geraldine (エドワード・"エッジ"・ジェラルダイン Edowādo "Ejji" Jerarudain?) |
||
Edge is the royal prince of Eblan and the only heir to the throne. Though often cocky, Edge is a righteous young man who is not easily manipulated or led astray from his morals. Cecil first meets Edge in Cave Eblan, after he has been defeated in battle by the Lord of Fire, Rubicante. Because Cecil and the rest are after Rubicante as well, Edge — who becomes completely taken with Rydia — joins the party. He is forced to watch his parents, whom Lugae has turned into demons, sacrifice themselves; this anger and belief that Rubicante, who denies doing so and condemns Lugae, is responsible leads him to learn his two most powerful techniques prior to the fight with Rubicante. He helps defeat Zeromus, and takes the throne of Eblan despite concerns that he does not take it seriously enough. |
FuSoYa Japanese name: Fusuya (フースーヤ Fūsūya?) |
||
A resident of the moon, this Lunarian's true origins are unknown. It is believed that FuSoYa comes from the planet that once lay between Mars and Jupiter, that was destroyed and became the asteroid belt. The wisest character of the game, FuSoYa, who watches over the Lunarians, knows the true origins of Cecil, Golbez, the Crystals, and the destruction of the world. Once FuSoYa explains Golbez's intentions to Cecil, he joins the party to help save the world. Inside the Giant of Babel, he dispels Golbez's mind control after destroying the CPU and the resurrected Elemental Lords, and he and Golbez go off to fight Zemus. They defeat Zemus with their magic just as Cecil's group arrives. However, Zeromus, formed from Zemus's hatred, resists their magic, is unaffected by the crystal because of the darkness in Golbez's heart, and easily overpowers them and Cecil's group. However, the prayers of the world revitalize Cecil's party, and Cecil uses the Crystal with his holy power to render Zeromus vulnerable, and defeats him. FuSoYa returns to his sleep with Golbez and the rest of the Lunarians. |

Listed in alphabetical order
Barbariccia Barbariccia (バルバリシア Barubarishia?, Valvalis in the original SNES release and PlayStation re-release) is the only female member of the Four Elemental Lords. The Lord (or Lady) of Wind, Barbariccia can transform herself into an indestructible tornado. Only Dragon Knights are able to break this tornado form of Barbariccia by jumping on her - ironic, as she appears to be in love with Kain. Though Cecil and the party first defeat Barbariccia in the Tower of Zot, they later fight her in the Giant of Babel, where it is somehow possible to damage her in her tornado. In both battles, Barbariccia is able to petrify the party and reduce them to near death with tornado spells. She also appears as an optional boss in Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls (GBA) on the final level of Hellfire Chasm. |
Baigan Baigan (ベイガン Beigan?) is a knight of Baron. Though the only two known kinds of Baron's knights are Dark Knights and Dragon Knights, Baigan's affiliation in Baron's military is never made clear, but it is implied that he is captain of the guard. He is, however, a good friend of Cecil — though, like Kain, he joined Golbez and the King in their army of evil. When the party sneaks into the seemingly vacant castle through the Watery Passage, he is the first apparently friendly face to greet them. However, the twins Palom and Porom smell "something fishy", and Baigan reveals his true self, telling the party that he was given the gift of his alternate form from Golbez. He can deflect magical attacks against his body with his arms. |
Cagnazzo One of the Four Lords of the Elements, Cagnazzo (カイナッツォ Kainattso?, Kainazzo in the original SNES release) has power over water; he can defend himself by withdrawing into his shell and by raising a barrier of water, and attacks with tidal waves. Hired by Golbez and Zemus, Cagnazzo killed King Baron and impersonated him. It was in fact Cagnazzo that ordered Cecil to steal the Water Crystal from Mysidia and bomb the village of Mist, not the king. The initial battle with Cagnazzo is fought in the throne room of Baron. The heroes seem to defeat Cagnazzo, but it appears he still had the ability to cling to the world for a tiny bit longer. As the party exited the throne room, it became apparent that the small hallway between the throne room and the main area of the castle had been trapped by Cagnazzo. He locked the doors and began to force the walls shut. Palom and Porom turned themselves to stone to prevent the rest of the party from being killed. He later joins the other Lords in a final battle against Cecil and his friends in the Giant of Babel. Also appears in Dawn of Souls on the Fifth Level of Hellfire Chasm. |
Dark Elf The Dark Elf is the thief who steals the Earth Crystal from the peaceful town of Troia. Cecil is given the task of retrieving the Crystal from the Elf, but is put at a disadvantage when the Dark Elf uses his powers to create magnetic fields in the cave. Edward, however, uses his magic Twinharp to weaken the fields by making the Dark Elf go mad, allowing Cecil to triumph over the Elf. He has the power to transform into a Dark Dragon. |
Golbez Golbez, or Golbeza (ゴルベーザ Gorubēza?) in the original Japanese version, is the mysterious sorcerer who replaces Cecil as the captain of the Red Wings. Skilled in black magic and summon magic, the sorcerer is a powerful opponent who serves as the main antagonist for the majority of the game. Somehow affiliated with King Baron, Golbez has brainwashed Kain to assist him in their evil deeds. It is later revealed that Golbez is actually Cecil's brother and that he himself is also being controlled by Zemus. Golbez attempts to defeat Zemus with FuSoYa, but cannot defeat Zeromus, and gives Cecil the Crystal to render him vulnerable (the true nature of the Crystal is unknown; it may be one of the Elemental crystals or a ninth Crystal from the Lunarians, but it is never made clear). Golbez is unable to return to earth because of the crimes that Zemus committed through him, deciding to sleep with the Lunarians. Cecil bids him goodbye, calling him "brother." |
Dr. Lugae Dr. Lugae is a mad scientist working for Rubicante. It is never stated whether or not he is under the mind control of Zemus and Golbez, or if he is helping them according to his own will, although the latter is implied, given his insubordination. He is the self-proclaimed "brains behind Golbez's operation" and turned Edge's parents — the King and Queen of Eblan — into monsters even though Rubicante supposedly never gave him permission to do so. His bodyguard and masterpiece is Barnabas, a Frankenstein-like monster. Should Barnabas become damaged enough to warrant the concern of Dr. Lugae, he will mount the monster as a last stand, combining their two powers. He later seemingly transforms into a Cyborg-like creature with advanced weaponry, before being finally defeated. |
Magus Sisters The three Magus Sisters, Cindy, Mindy, and Sandy, (or Mag, Rag, and Dog in the original Japanese version) work in conjugation with Golbez and Barbariccia in the Tower of Zot. These sisters also appear as the strongest summoned monsters in Final Fantasy X. |
Rubicante Rubicante (ルビカンテ Rubikante?, Rubicant in the original SNES release and PlayStation re-release) is the leader and strongest member of the Four Lords of the Elements. With the ability to create and manipulate fire with his own hands makes him a worthy opponent; his Cloak of Flames absorbs even Ice element attacks. Working with Dr. Lugae to raise the Giant of Babel, he is the archenemy of Edge. Cecil and Edge later defeat Rubicante in the Tower of Babel and the Giant of Babel. Unlike the other Lords, he is very honorable and even heals Cecil's party before fighting them; however, this may be out of pride, so that he can defeat the greatest threat to Zemus's plans without any special advantages. He did not authorize Lugae to transform Edge's parents into monsters. Cecil must face him again within the Giant of Babel. Also appears in Dawn of Souls in the Final level of Hellfire Chasm. |
Scarmiglione Scarmiglione (スカルミリョーネ Sukarumiryōne?, Milon in the original SNES release and PlayStation re-release) is the Elemental Lord of Earth who first meets Cecil on Mt. Ordeals when the Dark Knight is on his quest to become a Paladin. Though Cecil thinks that he has defeated Scarmiglione and his zombie minions, the Earth Lord soon transforms into a hunched, zombie-like beast, attacking the group from behind and using poison gas and brute strength. Even though Cecil and his allies believe that Scarmiglione had been destroyed as he fell off a bridge at the summit of Mt. Hobs, he faces the Lord once again in the Giant of Babel. Both of his forms appear in Dawn of Souls on the fifth level of Hellfire Chasm. |
Zemus Zemus (ゼムス Zemusu?) is the mastermind behind all the evil in Final Fantasy IV; he apparently wishes for dominance over the planet(though whether he wishes for himself to dominate the planet or the lunarians is never made clear). With his mind control powers, he manipulates Golbez into doing his will. Golbez, in turn, uses his own telepathic influence over Kain. FuSoYa reveals that Zemus is the only Lunarian who refused to go into sleep until the time when Lunarians and Earthlings could live in harmony. Even though Golbez and FuSoYa vanquish him, Zemus comes back to life as Zeromus, the monstrous embodiment of his hatred and evil. Zeromus has considerable prowess in magic; his moves include Big Bang, a powerful magic attack, and Black Hole, which has the power to nullify magical benefits, as well as variety of offensive magic. Stealing the Dark Matter item in the pre battle stage will reduce the amount of damage his Big Bang attack does. A stronger version, Zeromus EG, in the Game Boy Advance version can be fought in the Lunar Ruins, at the last floor. The sprite used for Zeromus EG is Zeromus in Final Fantasy IV Easytype. |
Zeromus Zeromus (ゼロムス Zeromusu?) is the monstrous embodiment of Zemus' hatred and evil. He is the final villain in the video game. |

Anna Anna is the daughter of Tellah and is engaged to Prince Edward of Damcyan. After the death of Anna's mother, Tellah became very over-protective of Anna, in hopes of never losing her. When he learned of Anna's elopement with Edward, Tellah became very upset. In Baron's raid on Damcyan, Anna was killed by a rain of enemy arrows, using her body as a shield in order to try and save Edward's life. Edward and Anna meet again in the desert city of Kaipo, where he meets his fears. Though Tellah first took his anger out on Edward, he soon vowed to take Golbez's life no matter what. |
King Baron As both Cecil and Kain were orphaned at very young ages, King Baron took them in and raised them as his own. While he wished for both to become Dark Knights, Kain wanted to train as a Dragon Knight, like his father. Baron is killed by Cagnazzo though his spirit remained trapped in a secret second throne room of Baron Castle. When the party gains access to this area, they are able to talk to the king, and possibly gain his powers to use in battle if they can prove their worth to him. Rydia can summon Odin in battle if they defeat the King. |
Elder of Mysidia The Elder of Mysidia is the trainer of Palom, Porom, and the other mages of the town. A friend of Tellah, the Elder orders Palom and Porom to spy and Cecil when he is learning to become a Paladin. After Baron's raid on Mysidia, the Elder was unsure if he could trust the Dark Knight. However, when Cecil becomes a paladin, he becomes an ally of Cecil. Later, he along with Palom and Porom direct the prayers of the world to Cecil before the final battle. |
Fat Chocobo Fat Chocobo(Big Chocobo in Final Fantasy II (US)) is a helpful, intelligent chocobo who is much larger in size than the rest. He lives in the various Chocobo Forests across the world, as well as in the Dwarven Castle and the Lunar Whale airship. He helps Cecil and the party in a unique way. He does not provide transportation like regular chocobos, but instead, he will eat the party's unwanted items and regurgitate them at any time when they are needed. This provides extra inventory space for the party. He can be called using a Gysahl Green (Carrot in some versions of the game) in the Chocobo Forests and Dwarven Castle. He is always on-board the Lunar Whale, where the party does not need to summon him. Late in their quest, the party may acquire a Gysahl Whistle (Whistle in some versions of the game, which allows them to call Fat Chocobo from anywhere. Fat Chocobo has appeared in other Final Fantasy titles. He first appeared in Final Fantasy III, where he played the same role as in Final Fantasy IV. In Final Fantasy VII, he had a cameo role. When using the Choco/Mog summon materia, there is a one-in-six chance that the player will get a Fat Chocobo that falls on the enemies, rather than Choco and Mog crashing into them. He played a role as the king or god of chocobos in Final Fantasy IX, living in the secret Chocobo's Paradise and granting Choco (The chocobo that Zidane rides and helps) new abilities such as the power to walk over the ocean or mountains, or even the power of flight. He also plays Tetra Master, the game's featured card game. |
King Giott King Giott is the King of the Dwarves. Though Cid's Enterprise gets caught in the crossfire between the Red Wings and Giott's tanks, the dwarves soon befriend Cecil and the rest of the party. King Giott provides much of the insight on the Dark Crystals of the Underworld. |
KluYa KluYa is a Lunarian and the late father of Cecil and Golbez. KluYa is one of the very few Lunarians to show an extreme interest in humans. In fact, he even married one. By taking the Lunar Whale to Earth, KluYa introduced the concept of Devil's Road and the airship to Earthlings, even though Cid is often credited with inventing the ship. |
Kokkol Kokkol is the smith who forges Excalibur from Cecil's Ancient Sword and the Adamantite. If the player fights the Pink Puffs/Flan Princesses (1 in 64 chance encounter in a side room in the final dungeon unless the player uses a Siren), he or she can acquire a Pink Tail (1 in 64 encounters), which can be used to make Cecil's best armor. |
Luca Princess Luca is the daughter of King Giott. She is most notable for something that belongs to her: her dolls, which Golbez turns into Chucky-like monstrosities called calcobrenas that attack the party. At first Luca seems untrusting of Cecil (perhaps the doll incident has something to do with it), but like the other dwarves, she learns to accept them. Under the rule of Luca and her father, the Dwarves help assist the party in the battles in the Underworld. |
Namingway A Hummingway that has skills at naming things, Namingway appears throughout the game to give the player the option of renaming the characters. In Final Fantasy IX, Namingway reappears as card that allows the player to change the character's names. |
[edit] Trivia
