[edit] Hero

The Hero

The Hero

The Hero (the player gets to choose his name at the beginning) was originally a house servant, but he managed to become a royal guard with some attention from Princess Medea. When Dhoulmagus attacked the castle and placed a curse on it, he was the only one (besides King Trode and Princess Medea) to escape the battered castle, and the only one who emerged unscathed and uncursed. He is very kind-hearted and is willing to go out the way for people he just met. King Trode once called the Hero "the lucky one."

Although the player is the person that names the Hero, in the demo versions of the game, this character is named Eight in reference to this being the eighth installment in the Dragon Quest series.

Being the only main character without a voice, the Hero is the archetypal silent protagonist. Nevertheless, he is actually quite talkative, bringing other characters up to speed with the events of his travels and conversing with various townspeople. His colleagues regard him as kind, honorable, a gentleman, and an able leader.

His origin is half-human, half-Dragovian. He was born to an Argonian Prince named Eltrio (Clavius' older brother) and a Dragovian named Xia which makes Prince Charmles his cousin. Twenty years ago, Xia decided to visit the human world. There, she met Eltrio, and they fell in love at first sight. Due to the great differences between the couple, Chen Mui, the Hero's grandfather, thought it was right to break them apart, but in the end, it only brought them sadness and pain.

Chen Mui brought his daughter back to the Dragovian Sanctuary. On the way home, they saw a human body. It was Eltrio, who fought desperately to see his love again, but died before reaching the Sanctuary gates. Xia was saddened to her very soul, to the point of losing her will to live. One day, Xia realized she was pregnant with the Hero, and despite criticism from the Dragovian Elders, she decided to keep the baby. She delivered a healthy boy, but was unable to recover from the strain of childbirth and died.

Several years later, the Council of Elders decided what to do with the child. The Hero's memories would be sealed away by The Lord of the Dragovians, and he would be banished from the Sanctuary. His grandfather fought against the closed-minded decision, but they refused to reverse it.

Curse attacks and cursed equipment have no effect on the Hero, because the spell used to seal away his memories was a form of curse itself, which both sealed away his memories and protected him from all other types of curses, explaining how he escaped from the Kingdom of Trodain without harm.

In the special ending, he marries Medea inside the Savella Cathedral when his uncle King Clavius reconsiders the fact that he is the rightful groom, being Eltrio's son.

[edit] Yangus

Yangus
Yangus

A former bandit from "Pickham" (a possible pun on Peckham, an area of London), Yangus grew tired of living as a thief in his home town and decided to leave and start clean. However, due to his rough East London accent and appearance he was always considered a bandit or a thief wherever he went. He then decided to pillage people by extorting a toll from those trying to cross the Trodain-Farebury bridge; he did this until he met the Hero and King Trode. The two refused to pay him and Yangus attacked them, but he hit the bridge and fell through the hole he created. When the bridge collapsed, Yangus was clinging on for dear life, with King Trode deciding to leave him there. The Hero, however, couldn't just leave him there to die, so he pulled him up, saving Yangus' life. Yangus was so grateful that he swore to follow the Hero for the rest of his days and then nicknamed him the "Guvner" or just "Guv."

Back in Yangus' thievery days, he promised a love interest (Red) a jewel named the Venus Tear. However the challenges of the Swordman's Labyrinth proved too much for Yangus alone. He suffered several injuries on his face and body, as well as his heart. His failure had led to his separation from Red.

His catchphrase is "COR BLIMEY!" (usually when King Trode pops out of nowhere; although at one point in the game he decides that "It's getting old" and no longer says it) He tends to use words that he is unable to say properly in order to sound more intelligent such as "spefic" and "assisitation."

Yangus' rough past has made him tough and rugged in body and soul. Because of the Hero's influence, Yangus has also grown to be protective, sociable, and reliable. He will leap into battle headfirst to protect his friends.

Yangus is voiced by Ricky Grover.

A spinoff called Dragon Quest Yangus has been announced featuring Yangus' adventures as a child.

[edit] Jessica Albert

Jessica

Jessica

A short-tempered sorceress coming from the wealthy Albert family in the town of Alexandria, Jessica's line has been known to wield magic. Her older brother Alistair was famous for being a skilled swordsman and talented magic user, but died while investigating the mysterious break-in of the tower nearby.

When news came of Alistair's death, the town was devastated. The Albert family tradition was to mourn in silence. But Jessica managed to slip out of the Albert's estate to ascertain the identity of Alistair's assailant. At the top floor of the tower, Alistair's soul spoke to Jessica through the statue of Alexandra. Upon learning that it was Dhoulmagus who killed him, Jessica returned home to prepare for her journey. Her mother believed that, as a woman, Jessica's duty was to remain home, not to seek vengeance. Yet Jessica's obsession for revenge was not to be denied. Upon hearing this, her mother excommunicated her from the family. Jessica's engangement to Lorenzo of Argonia, the son of King Clavius' chancellor, was dissolved. She packed her things and then left for Port Prospect, hoping to catch up with Dhoulmagus. After resolving the Khalamari dilemma, she asked the Hero and Yangus if she could join them, since their goals were the same.

The team managed to defeat Dhoulmagus at the Dark Ruins. From his remains, Jessica picked up the sceptre of Trodain and was possessed by it. The rest of the party with the help of Dominico managed to stop her and release her from the sceptre's influence. After emerging from a coma, Jessica reveals the true evil behind the murders by Dhoulmagus. But amidst the confusion, the sceptre managed to take a hold on Dominico's dog, Sir Leopold, allowing the murderous rampage to continue.

After recovering from the sceptre's possession, Jessica admitted her dissatisfaction, saying that the death of Dhoulmagus didn't bring Alistair back. She felt extreme guilt for being so consumed with revenge. After refocusing her energies on Rhapthorne, she continued with the party to restore peace to the land.

Jessica's demeanor is about as explosive as her fiery red hair, along with her tendency to use fire magic to solve problems. Her extreme beauty is a magnet for attention, both good and bad. She tends to dress provocatively to turn the tides of battle to her hand. Deep down, she has a vulnerable and thoughtful side. She appears to be closest to the Hero and confides in him often.

Jessica has the ability to change her clothes and appearance while equipping special items.

Jessica is voiced by Emma Ferguson.

[edit] Angelo

Angelo
Angelo

Angelo (ククール Kukule?) is a Templar in Maella Abbey's templar knights. His duties are to uphold the order of the Goddess, live a sin free life, and protect the Abbot; but he is actually a playboy, a gambler, a cheat, an alcoholic, and a womanizer all rolled into one. He is mocked by other templars as a disgrace for his sinful life, and is especially berated by the commander of the templars, and half brother, Marcello. He does, however, feel a strong sense of duty to protecting Abbot Fransisco, as he is the only person shown in the game that welcomed Angelo into the abbey when he was a child.

His family was actually quite wealthy, but his father was a womanizer and a horrible gambler, and when he died, his mansion and possessions were taken to pay off the debt. Angelo had no place to go but to the Abbey, known for caring for orphans and others who had no place else to go.

During his latest stir over a brawl in Simpleton, Marcello put him on suspension of his duties and declared that he could not leave the Abbey under any circumstances. However, when Dhoulmagus came requesting an audience with Abbot, Angelo sensed a dark presence, and asked for the Hero's group to rescue the Abbot. Despite their assistance, however, the Abbot was killed. Marcello then assumed the role of new abbot and ordered Angelo to search for Dhoulmagus by joining the Hero's party.

Angelo is confident, brash, and calculating. His charm can give him sway with the ladies, except for Jessica, who can see through his acts as clearly as glass. Despite his vices, Angelo is caring and considerate. His healing abilities can save the team in many occasions.

Angelo is voiced by Blake Riston.

[edit] Munchie/Chen Mui

Chen Mui
Chen Mui

During the Hero's whole life, Munchie was by his side as his pet mouse. Despite his small and fragile appearance, he proves to be a very important asset to the party, even when he eats cheese. Each kind of cheese has a different effect on him, like making him perform elemental attacks, increase the party's stats, or even heal their wounds (although it is revealed that he can do these actions naturally, but was simply trying to get free cheese from his grandson). Also, in some parts of the game, there are puzzles can be only be solved with his help. Because of his small size, he can easily pass through little holes and reach places that are inaccessible to the rest of the group.

After the party's first victory against The Lord of the Dragovians, he reveals himself as Chen Mui, the Hero's Dragovian grandfather.

After Xia's death, Chen Mui realized that the boy was the only link to his daughter, and after the Council of Elders's decision to exile the Hero from the Dragovian Sanctuary, he begged to also leave in order to watch over him. The Lord of the Dragovians agreed, but only if he transformed himself into a mouse. He accepted that condition, and chased after the boy as quickly as he could. Chen Mui apologizes to the Hero for causing so much suffering to him and his parents. He also gives him his father's Argon ring, an item that proves the Hero's noble origin, unlocking the special ending sequence of the game, available after Rhapthorne's final defeat.

Munchie's name is actually an anagram to his real name.

[edit] King Trode

King Trode
King Trode

King Trode is the King of Trodain. His family has been guarding the magical scepter for centuries. When Dhoulmagus managed to steal it, he and his daughter were cursed by a spell, transforming the king into a troll and the princess into a horse.

King Trode's father and Argonia's King Clavius' mother loved each other, but they lived in a time when their kingdoms were hostile to each other, a situation that foiled their plans to marry. In respect to this unfulfilled love, their sons promised to marry their children in order to strengthen the ties of friendship between their countries, and thus Trode arranged his daughter's engagement with King Eltrio's son. However, Eltirio abdicated the throne for the woman he loved before he bore a son, so the duty was passed on to King Clavius and his son, Charmles. None of them knew that the Hero was Eltirio's son and therefore the rightful groom.

Despite the unkingly appearance Trode's transformation, he still orders, acts, and behaves like one. Nevertheless, his skills prove to be invaluable to the party when he creates the alchemy pot, an instrument with the power to create new items by combining other ones. Some of the most valuable items of the game can only be obtained through alchemy.

In the special ending, he has the Hero marry Medea inside the Savella Cathedral due to King Clavius' change of heart. He is happy for them and so is King Clavius that the promise has been fulfilled in the right way.

King Trode is voiced by Jon Glover.

[edit] Princess Medea

Princess Medea

Princess Medea

When Dhoulmagus stole the sceptre kept in Trodain Castle, he cursed the princess by turning her into a horse. She journeyed with her father and the Hero to try and break the curse. In her new form, she conveniently pulled the party's supply wagon. Since the heroes acknowledged her plight, no one burdened her by riding in the cart besides the King.

Princess Medea was reknown throughout the land for her loveliness and, even as a horse, she enchanted people with her exceptional beauty. Only those with keen supernatural power were able to perceive her true nature.

Eventually, the journey led to a mystical spring, from which the waters were able to disrupt the curse. By drinking from them, she was able to return to human form temporarily. She also developed the ability to communicate telepathically with the Hero, but only when both of them were asleep.

Despite the engagement to Prince Charmles of Argonia, she harbored strong feelings for the Hero, who was also her childhood friend. She eventually married the Hero after he had been accused of kidnapping her in the special ending sequence of the game. As decreed by King Clavius, the Hero is the rightful groom.

Princess Medea is voiced by Victoria Shalet.

[edit] Rhapthorne

Rhapthorne
Rhapthorne

The game's main villain. His essence was trapped in a sceptre by the seven sages with Empyrea's help. But when Dhoulmagus released the sceptre from the magical circle in Trodain, Rhapthorne possessed him. In order to free his soul and return to power, Rhapthorne makes Dhoulmagus murder each one of the sages's heirs to break the seal on the sceptre. Once Dhoulmagus took out four of the heirs, he was cornered by the heroes and defeated. After possessing Sir Leopold, Rhapthorne kills two more heirs. Finally, he possessed Marcello, who killed the last heir, and freed his physical form. However the Hero, Jessica, Angelo and Yangus fought him to the death with the aid of Empyrea in order to return the world to balance.

Rhapthorne is voiced by Jonathan Keeble.

Dhoulmagus

Dhoulmagus

[edit] Dhoulmagus

Dhoulmagus is a power-hungry jester that wanted the power of the Trodain sceptre. He stole the sceptre, cursed Medea and Trode, and covered Trodain Castle in thorns. Possessed by Rhapthorne, he killed his first four victims: His former master Rylus, the swordsman Alistair, Abbot Francisco, and Mr. Golding, the casino owner. The Hero and party defeated him after a long chase, and for a while they thought their ordeals were finally over, until they discover he wasn't the true enemy.

Dhoulmagus is voiced by Keith Wickham.

Evil Sir Leopold

Evil Sir Leopold

[edit] Sir Leopold

Dominico's pet dog. After Jessica was liberated from the sceptre's power, it took a time for the party to realize its true nature. During that time, Leopold was possessed by the sceptre, allowing Rhapthorne to continue his killing spree. The possessed Leopold killed David and Marta, but was defeated before he was able to kill the Lord High Priest.

He was finally defeated in Savella Cathedral, but before the party could put an end to Rhapthorne's ambitions, Marcello took possession of the sceptre and accused the Hero and the party of killing the Lord High Priest and sentenced them and High Priest Rolo to life imprisonment on Purgatory Island.

Marcello
Marcello

[edit] Marcello

Angelo's half brother, he was born from an affair between their father and a maid. When Angelo was born, his father cast away both Marcello and his mother from his home. After his mother died, Marcello was adopted by Abbot Francisco.

Marcello despises Angelo because he thinks if he hadn't been born, their father would never had estranged him and his mother, and he never would have suffered any of his ordeals. As Marcello is superior in the order of templars, he doesn't miss an opportunity to make Angelo's life miserable. Marcello's dream is to climb to the top in the religion's hierarchy, to prove the world that even an illegitimate child like him could become an important person by his own effort.

Later in the game, Marcello rose to become the leader of the Lord High Priest's personal guard. After the Lord High Priest fainted when the heroes defeated Sir Leopold, Marcello framed High Priest Rolo and the party for attempting to assassinate the Lord High Priest and sent them to Purgatory Island. Marcello, in turn, took possession of the sceptre but managed to repel the influence of Rhapthorne, proving himself to be the only man able to not only resist the will of Rhapthorne but to take control of the sceptre's power for himself. He killed the Lord High Priest soon after. Being the only high-ranking church official left not dead or imprisoned, Marcello was to become the new Lord High Priest, finally achieving his life's ambition. During his ceremony on the isle of Neos, Marcello decided to make a rousing speech against the ways of the Church and its favoritism towards the aristocracy, using his Templars to contain the people at the ceremony against their wills.

The party arrived in Neos during the ceremony and confronted Marcello, trying to take back the sceptre. Marcello was defeated, but because of that, Rhapthorne was finally able to possess him. The possessed Marcello flew up and destroyed the Goddess statue, unleashing the Black Citadel and Rhapthorne's physical form.

Marcello ended up hanging off of a ledge over a huge gaping hole that was once the Holy Isle of Neos. He attempts to kill himself by falling to his death, but is saved by Angelo. Angelo concluded that he and Marcello are even for Marcello's cold attitude towards him. After throwing away his Templar Captain's ring, Marcello disappeared off to parts unknown, swearing that one day Angelo would regret saving his life.

Marcello is voiced by Josh Cohen.

[edit] Supporting Cast

[edit] The Seven Sages

The seven people who helped Empyrea seal away Rhapthorne into the Godbird Sceptre...

  • Kupas: Sage of the Green Orb. A powerful magician, he became friends with an elf girl and a Gigantes after he found them unconscious. Together they founded the city of Tryan Gully, a place where monsters, humans, and elves alike all lived together in peace. Because their life spans are far greater than humans', the elf and the Gigantes are still alive to this day. Before his death, Kupas asked them to carry out his wish to never let anyone forget how Rhapthorne terrorized the world. His true heir is David. Realizing how easy it would be for Rhapthorne to target his descendants, Kupas charged his companion and his companion's descendants to hide his bloodline. Kupas conferred his magical power to his friend and family in order to protect his own descendants from discovery. Through time, that charge was forgotten. Kupas' plan to fool Rhapthorne also failed, as Rhapthorne was immediately able to recognize David as the true holder of the bloodline rather than Dominico, the descendant of whom Kupas charged to protect the true blood.
  • Golding: Sage of the Yellow Orb. He was a very able fighter and considered the mightiest of the seven sages. His heir is Mr. Golding.
  • Alexander: Sage of the Blue Orb. He was skilled in Sword fighting and Magic. Alistair inherited the swordsmanship and Jessica the magical prowess. Although they are both descended from Alexander, Alistair was chosen as holder of the bloodline.
  • Kadan: Sage of the Red Orb. A renowned scholar, his descendants are Marta and her son Marek, though Marta is the chosen holder of the bloodline.
  • Gozo: Sage of the Purple Orb. One of the greatest sorcerers who ever lived, his descendant is Rylus.
  • Regnar: Sage of the Silver Orb. He was revived from death in order to aid the other sages. He is closer to the Goddess than anyone else, and it was he who named the Godbird Empyrea. His descendant is the Lord High Priest.
  • Eagus: Sage of the Gold Orb. He was the youngest of all sages at an age of six, and foretold that Rhapthorne would return someday. He also addresses the party after they break through the barrier guarding Rhapthorne. His descendant is Abbot Francisco.

[edit] The Seven Heirs

Each of the seven heirs is a descendant to one of the Sages and inherits their powers. To escape from his confinement in the godbird sceptre, Rhapthorne commands those he possesses to kill each one of them.

  • Master Rylus: Dhoulmagus's former master. As a renowned magician, he was the first person King Trode and the team sought out for guidance. Unfortunately, he died before the beginning of the game as a result of arson on Dhoulmagus' part.
  • Alistair Albert: Jessica's older brother and Alexander's descendant. Alistair was protector of Alexandria and the East Tower. One day, the door to the Eastern Tower was found open. Patrolling up to the top floor, he was confronted by Dhoulmagus, who had immobilized him with magic. Unable to draw his sword and defend himself, Alistair was quickly slain by Dhoulmagus' hand.
  • Abbot Francisco: A descendant of Eagus and childhood friend of the Lord High Priest, he was the one who raised Marcello and Angelo after they lost their families, among many lost and displaced orphans. Abbot Francisco was murdered on the second floor of his living quarters in Maella Abbey by Dhoulmagus.
  • Mr. Golding: Golding's descendant, Mr. Golding was also an able fighter who took down a troll with his bare hands. He was the owner of the casino until he was murdered. Mr. Golding was killed by Dhoulmagus behind his upstairs couch.
  • David: Descendant of Kupas. Like all of Kupas's descendants, David was living in Tryan Gully under the care of the Elf and the Gigantes who founded the city with his ancestor long ago. David travelled from Tryan Gully all the way to Arcadia and collapsed. Dominico took him in as his servant and mistreated him, unaware of his responsibility to protect him from Rhapthorne. David was killed by Sir Leopold near his cage.
  • Marta: An old herb doctor from the Orkutsk mountains. She was killed by Sir Leopold outside her cottage.
  • The Lord High Priest: The highest authority in the world's religion. He was killed by Marcello shortly after Sir Leopold was defeated.

[edit] Other characters

  • Dominico
Dominico
Dominico

Dominico comes fom a long lineage of powerful magicians in Arcadia. Long ago, his family received the mission to protect the descendants of Kupas, one of the seven sages. Sometime in the past, his family has forgotten their duty and started to use their powers to obtain prestige and fortune. Curiously, Dominico took David, who was the same person his family swore to protect, as his personal servant, unaware of his true identity. He was always abusing and degrading David, even to the point where he was forced to address Dominico's black dog as "Sir Leopold".

When the party arrived in Arcadia in their search for Jessica, who was possessed by the sceptre, they found that she stormed Dominico's house to kill Kupas' heir. When they arrived, Jessica disappeared for the time being, telling Dominico to devise a better defense for the next time they'd meet. They devised a plan to stop her. When she reappeared, they fought her long enough for Dominico to erect a powerful barrier using the Kran Spinels. The spell knocked the sceptre from her hands and she fell unconscious, free from Rhapthorne's control. When Jessica told the rest of the party that she was being controlled and impelled to kill David instead of Dominico, the party realized the real threat was in that artifact.

Ironically, Sir Leopold, was possessed by the sceptre and killed David. When Dominico realized he failed in the mission passed down to him by his ancestors, he asked the party to destroy Sir Leopold, and told them that from then on he would dedicate himself to atone for his and his family's mistakes.

  • Alexandra

Alexandra was a world-renown stonemason, descandant to Alexander. When she married into the Albert family, she would become ancestor to Alistair and Jessica. She built the tower to the east of her family settlement and created a statue of herself, using the powerful Kran Spinels as eyes. The statue is capable of holding souls of the family. Both Alistair and Alexandra were able to communicate posthumously to the heroes through the statue. Her Kran Spinels were essential in creating a barrier that removed Rhapthorne's influence over Jessica.

  • King Clavius

He became king when his older brother Eltrio renounced his claim to the throne. With this, he was forced to fulfill the promise of peace left by his older brother. He has an extremely spoiled son in Charmles, with whom he is constantly displeased with. He originally asks Hero to help his son get the Argon Hearts in the trial (without knowing that Hero is his nephew, the son of Eltrio). In the original ending, he scolds the Prince for deception. In the special ending, he decrees that the Hero is the rightful groom since the Hero is Eltrio's son. Although he doesn't make the Hero the new prince, the pact is indeed sealed. The Hero is now heir to the throne of Trodain with peace between kingdoms.

  • Prince Charmles
Charmles
Charmles

King Clavius of Argonia's only son and the Hero's cousin. An overweight, cowardly snob of a boy, Charmles (according to him, pronounced "sharm-LEI") is enamored with himself and his own princely blood, which, he believes, entitles him to order around whomever he pleases. He is also revealed to be a terrible pervert, as evidenced by the dirty magazine in his bookshelf and by his desire to marry Medea simply because she is (in his father's words) "va va voom." People tend to accidentally (and sometimes intentionally) call him "Prince Charmless". In order to obtain the "Magic Mirror" from King Clavius, the party agreed to help his son in the Argon hunt.

The Argon hunt is a test of courage that all Argonian princes must undertake in order to be considered qualified to become the next king. The inductee has to fight an Argon Lizard and obtain a jewel called the Argon heart from its body. But because he was too cowardly to complete the task on his own, King Clavius hires the party to assist him in his task, though in truth they do all of the work, even being forced to fight multiple Argon lizards until Charmles can find a heart that is big enough to satisfy him. However, in the end, after all the work the party goes through hunting and defeating the strongest Argon Lizards in the hunting ground just to get a big enough heart, Charmles is still ungrateful and cheats again by buying a gigantic (and presumably fake) Argon heart off a sleazy peddler as soon as he gets back to Argonia. King Clavius was able to watch Charmles buy the heart from the castle battlements, witnessing Charmles deviousness and that the Argon heart he brought was not the one he "earned," but he does not let Charmles know until the ending of the game.

Charmles is engaged to Princess Medea, according to a pact sealed by their grandfathers, and unaware of the fact that the horse accompanying the party is actually her, he tries to mount her against her will, and she subsequently bucks him. He tries to hit Medea for it, but King Trode and the Hero intervenes. In both endings of the game, Charmles' wedding plans are foiled by the Hero, and he accuses the Hero of kidnapping the Princess when she does not turn up at the altar. It is soon revealed that it is the Hero who is the one Medea loves and the one she is destined to marry.

Prince Charmles is voiced by Richard Pearce.

  • Bangerz and Mash

Two rambunctious little boys from Jessica's hometown of Alexandria. They've appointed themselves as the town's guardians, and as such feel very protective of Jessica, whom they see as a big sister.

Bangerz is the more outgoing of the pair and their de-facto leader, with Mash tending to just follow Bangerz's lead. When Jessica leaves town to search for Alistair's killer at the Alexandra Tower, Bangerz accompanies the party to the tower and tells them the secret to entering the building which only residents of Alexandria know. Although he acts tough, it is clear that Bangerz is visibly worried about Jessica and begs the party to bring her back safely.

Once Rhapthorne begins his invasion of the World of Light, Jessica returns to Alexandria. In an attempt to calm Bangerz and Mash, she declares them the town's official guardians and asks them to tell everyone not to panic. As a passing word, they voice their confidence that Jessica will be able to defeat Rhapthorne and assure her that everything will be alright at home.

The boys's namesakes are taken from a British colloquialism of a dish of sausage and mash potatoes.

  • Cash and Carrie

The adopted children of Mr. Golding. After his death, Cash and Carrie closed the Baccarat Casino. They hired merceneries to defeat Dhoulmagus at the Dark Isle. After Dhoulmagus' death, they began fighting over inheritance of the casino and their father's money. The Golding family tradition was for the children to obtain the family mark in the Dragon Graveyard before taking control of the Golding family estate. During a later part of the game, the Hero and friends choose one of the pair to bodyguard on this mission. After the team defeats the guardians of the family tomb, Cash and Carrie settle their differences and both become the inheritants of Golding's casino and money.

  • Red

The greatest thief the World of Light has ever known is actually a woman. Red is a master burglar, pickpocket, and adventurer, and has traveled the world trying to satiate her unquenchable thirst for riches and treasure. As can be expected of such an avid adventurer, Red is an independent woman with a strong will and a mouth just as foul.

While originally introduced as an old burglar acquaintance of Yangus, the party later learns that Yangus and Red had a turbulent relationship in the past. They broke up over unknown circumstances, though it is believed their split came about over Yangus' decision to give up thievery and live an honest life. Even though Red and Yangus bad-mouth and insult each other on a regular basis, it is clear that they still hold deep feelings for each other, though each is too proud is admit it.

The party first encounters Red when visiting Pickham for their first time, where she contracts them to enter the Swordsman's Labyrinth and get her the Venus Tear, a rare gem. They encounter her a second time when they enter the Pirate's Cove. Red races them to Captain Crowe's treasure and though she beats them to it (primarily by cheating), she fails to defeat Crowe's ghost in battle, and is knocked unconscious. Before the party takes on Rhapthorne, they can visit her to obtain the Flail of Fury on the condition that he return it to her after he's defeated Rhapthorne. Everyone but Yangus picks up on the true meaning of the gesture, and when Angelo says it out loud, Yangus and Red visibly blush.

  • Empyrea
Empyrea
Empyrea

Also known as Ramia from Dragon Quest III, Empyrea is referred to as a god. She has the power to travel between worlds. The seven sages crafted the Godbird Scepter under her instruction. When Rhapthorne attempted to open the gate between the World of Light and the World of Darkness, Empyrea used all her power to seal the gate, losing her ability. Her shadow in the World of Light creates a portal to the World of Darkness called the "Dark Eye".

Empyrea's first encounter with the party was when they traveled to the World of Darkness in search for her advice. There they discovered that her egg was stolen by a monster called Gemon, and thus she has been forced to attack the nearby village of Empycchu.

The party agreed to infiltrate the Godbird's Eyrie where the egg was being kept hostage, but during the battle to recover it, Gemon sacrificed himself to destroy the egg. Empyrea's child, who died before birth, appeared as a spirit before the party and decided to aid in their quest, bestowing them the power to fly through the skies, allowing them to reach places of their world inaccessible by land or sea.

Empyrea plays a major role in the game's final battle. Not only does she recover the Godbird's sceptre, allowing the party to invoke the power of the seven sages' spirits to break the barrier protecting Rhapthorne, but she also carries them on her back throughout the entire fight.

Empyrea is voiced by Jessica Martin.

  • Ishmahri
Ishmahri
Ishmahri

A mysterious man who lives in another dimension known as the Moonshadow Realm. He aids the party twice during their adventures. First he grants King Pavan's wish to see his deceased wife Sasha one last time. Next he reawakens the memories of the Ancient Ocean to allow the return of a magical ship to the sea, allowing the heroes to travel through the world's oceans.

Ishmahri's source of power is music and he performs various mystical tasks by playing his harp. Ishmahri is also versed with strange telepathic and telekinetic powers, allowing him to communicate to and levitate inanimate objects, as well as himself.

The Lord of the Dragovians
The Lord of the Dragovians
  • The Lord of the Dragovians

The most powerful member of the Dragovian tribe. After the tragic events involving the Hero's parents, he started to believe that humans and Dragovians could never coexist, and thus he cast a spell in himself in order to remain forever in his dragon form. This made him lose control over his mind and begin draining the life energy from the rest of the Dragovian population.

Just when the remaining Dragovians were about to lose hope, because none of them could be able to stop their Lord, the party arrives in the Dragovian Sanctuary, and Chen Mui asks them for help.

After the party's first victory against him, the Lord of the Dragovians returns to his senses. Amazed and ashamed by the fact the same boy he and his people had estranged had saved his tribe from certain doom, he gives them the right to perform the Dragovian Trials: a series of battles against him in dragon form, where each victory allows access to one of the Dragovian treasures. Each time the Lord of the Dragovians is defeated, he morphs into an even stronger dragon for the following battle.

His six forms are the Vermillion Dragon, the Emerald Dragon, the Silver Dragon, the Gold Dragon, the Darksteel Dragon, and the Divine Dragon. In the final Dragovian Trial, the Hero must beat all six dragon forms in a row, and then he must confront the final form, the Ultimate Dragon. Even in his weakest form, the Vermillion Dragon, the Lord of the Dragovians reveals himself as an opponent even more challenging than any other in the game, including Rhapthorne himself.

As an homage to the original game, the Lord of the Dragovians bears a striking resemblance to the Dragonlord of the first Dragon Quest game, as noted when the dragon stands upon his hind legs.

  • Morrie

The owner of the Monster Arena. He speaks with an Italian accent and has the appearance of a skinny Mr. Satan/Hercule of the Dragonball series. He first met the Hero on the rooftop of his arena. Sensing something special in him he sent him to capture three "infamous monsters" in order to be allowed entrance into the arena. Once captured, Morrie allows the Hero to compete in his Monstrous Pit. Morrie has a passionate and burning personality. It is also revealed that his last name is Mozzarella through the announcer's introduction of him in Rank S and that he is good friends with Torneko and Ragnar of Dragon Quest IV.

Morrie is voiced by Brian Bowels.
