The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett is a comic fantasy work and includes a cast of several hundred characters. Some of the best-known inhabitants of the Discworld are listed below.

The major city of the Discworld, Ankh-Morpork, is the central location of many of the novels.

[edit] Wizards and others at Unseen University

The Unseen University is the principal seat of magical learning on the Disc, mostly populated by the wizards.

  • Mustrum Ridcully, or Ridcully the Brown; the current Arch-Chancellor of the University
  • Galder Weatherwax; the 304th Arch-Chancellor of the University
  • The Librarian; transformed by a magical accident into an orangutan. Also doubles as the university's organist, where his ability to use his feet with as much dexterity as his hands combines with B. S. Johnson's particular "genius" to create an effect that is literally stunning.
  • Rincewind the Wizzard (sic); after a lifetime of running away that has taken him to the far regions of the Disc, he is now the Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography
  • Ponder Stibbons; formerly a postgraduate student in the High Energy Magic building, now the Head of Inadvisably Applied Magic
  • Windle Poons; the Disc's oldest living wizard (and then, for a brief time, the Disc's most mobile dead wizard)
  • The Bursar; at some remove from reality, subsists on dried frog pills
  • The Chair of Indefinite Studies
  • The Dean
  • The Lecturer in Recent Runes
  • The Senior Wrangler
  • Modo, the dwarfish gardener of the Unseen University.
  • Hex, the most powerful (and possibly only) computing machine on the Disc

The City Watch protect Ankh-Morpork from invaders, although usually the invaders get taken care of by sudden bankruptcy or strong drink. These days, what they mostly protect Ankh-Morpork from is itself.

  • Havelock Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork
  • Lady Sybil Vimes
  • The heads of the various guilds:
    • Mr. Boggis of the Thieves' Guild
    • Lord Downey of the Assassins' Guild
    • Mrs. Palm of the Seamstresses' Guild
    • Queen Molly of the Beggars' Guild
    • Mr. Slant of the Lawyers' Guild
    • Dr. Whiteface of the Fools' Guild

Ankh-Morpork is a hub of trade and commerce and some characters have major or recurring business roles

  • Chrysophrase, troll gangster
  • Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler, entrepreneur and seller of street food ("For you, two dollars - and that's cutting me own throat!")
  • Moist von Lipwig; one time crook sentenced to death but now in charge of the Post Office
  • Harry King; King of the Golden River, his old motto was "Taking the piss since 1961" but changed due to his wife...

The low society of the premier city on the disc

  • The Canting crew (five beggars even the Beggars' Guild will have nothing to do with):
    • Foul Ole Ron ("Buggrit, buggrit, millennium hand and shrimp, I told 'em..."), sometimes accompanied by a thinking brain dog, Gaspode.
    • Coffin Henry ("Hhrrrk-ptui!")
    • The Duck Man ("What duck?")
    • Arnold SidewaysA man with no legs, but a wheelchair of sorts and a boot on a pole, used to kick people. Not to be confused with Sidney Lopside, who is paid a stipend by the city to keep a bag over his head, as his uneven features tend to make people think they're looking at him upside-down.
    • Canting_crew#Altogether_Andrews who has eight separate personalities living in one body.
  • Leonard of Quirm, genius inventor.
  • Mrs Evadne Cake, a small medium at large. She has a tendency to answer questions people haven't asked yet, but gets a migraine if they don't ask the question she's already answered. Her daughter Ludmilla is a wolfwoman.
  • Hughnon Ridcully, High Priest of Blind Io, brother of Mustrum Ridcully.
  • William de Worde, publisher and editor of the Ankh-Morpork Times.
  • Dotsie and Sadie, the Agony Aunts. They are acknowledged generally as the unofficial security arm of the Seamstresses Guild.
  • Drumknott the apparent principal clerk to the Patrician Havelock Vetinari.
  • Willikins butler to Lady Sybil Vimes née Ramkin and Comander Vimes. Also a special constable and ex member of the Shamlegger Street Rude Boys gang.

The unreal can become more real on the Discworld through anthropomorphism

  • The four (or five) Horsemen of the Apocralypse
    • Death (the Grim Reaper; resembles a skeleton in a black robe, carrying a scythe)
    • War (and possibly also Mrs. War and their children Terror, Panic, and Clancy)
    • Famine
    • Pestilence
    • Ronnie Soak, the milkman (Real name Kaos, introduced in Thief of Time and occasionally referred to as the Fifth of Four- due to the fact he was a Horseman of the Apocralypse but left before they became famous)
  • Time (originally a lady, fell in love with then married Wen the Eternally Surprised, founder of the History Monks. Gave birth to Lobsang Ludd and then rebirthed him as Jeremy Clockson by accident. During Thief of Time, Lobsang remerged with Jeremy, met his parents and took over the job.)
  • The Auditors of Reality
  • The Hogfather
  • The Tooth Fairy (on Discworld actually a franchise, Ankh-Morpork has at least 3)

The gods play an active role with their worshippers

  • Blind Io, leader of the gods
  • The Lady. Not really a goddess, but very powerful all the same because almost everybody believes or hopes that she exists. She disappears when one says her name and sometimes appears when least expected; not in any sense the patron goddess of gamblers...
  • Fate, rival of the Lady
  • Nuggan(Deceased)
  • Om, worshipped by Omnians. Often represented by a turtle. (See Small Gods)
  • Offler, the crocodile-headed god
  • Bilious, "Oh-God" of hangovers
  • Sweevo, God of Cut Timber – prohibits the practice of "panupunitoplasty", though it seems that nobody (including Sweevo himself) knows exactly what that entails
  • Zephyrus, God of Slight Breezes
  • Anoia, minor goddess of Things That Stick In Drawers
  • Azrael, the Great Attractor, the Death of Universes, the beginning and end of time. One of the Old High Ones, the "over-gods" of the multiverses.
  • The Auditors, the servants of oblivion, the absolute embodiment of The Rules. Not actually gods.
  • Sessifet, Goddess of the Afternoon (A nude blue lady who lives in the sky. See Pyramids)
  • Flatulus, God of the Winds
  • Urika, Goddes of saunas, snow, and theatrical performances for fewer than 120 people
  • Libertina, Goddess of the sea, apple pie, certain types of ice cream, and short lengths of string
  • Patina, Goddess of wisdom. Similar to Greek mythology's Athena. Her holy bird is a penguin instead of an owl due to a sculptor's error.
  • Topaxi, God of certain mushrooms, and also of great ideas that you forgot to write down and will never remember again, and of people who tell other people that "dog" is "god" spelled backwards and think this is in some way revelatory (a little red god)
  • Bast, Goddess of things left on the doorstep or half digested under the bed (a cat goddess)

Some of the animals on the disc have their own personality too

  • Great A'Tuin, the gigantic turtle that carries the four elephants, Berilia, Tubul, Great T'Phon and Jerakeen that carry the Disc
  • Gaspode (Foul Ole Ron's Thinking Brain Dog)
  • Laddie (the Disc's first canine film star)
  • Greebo (Nanny Ogg's cat)
  • You Bastard, a camel and the greatest mathematician alive.

  • Cohen the Barbarian, leader of the Silver Horde (a group of elderly barbarians, which doesn't sound so scary until you realize that the main qualification of a barbarian is survival, and therefore an elderly barbarian must be frighteningly good at it)
  • Twoflower the imperturbable Tourist, original owner of the Luggage
  • Casanunda the dwarf - highwayman, liar, and the Disc's second-greatest lover ("I try harder.")
  • Various bogeymen, most notably Schleppel
  • The Luggage, a chest with a lot of legs and a foul attitude
  • Lu-Tze, the Sweeper, and other history monks
  • Wallace Sonky, the inventor of the Discworld version of the condom.
  • Bergholt Stuttley "Bloody Stupid" Johnson, a sort of anti-genius. His name is listed all over Ankh-Morpork, usually under "Cause of Death". Designer of Unseen University's Great Organ, equipped with nitrous, afterburner and 128 ft "Earthquake" pipe.
  • Rhys, Low King of the Dwarfs
