The diocese of Sion is one of the Swiss Catholic dioceses. Diocese corresponds more or less to the district of the Was worth.

Been founded at the end of the IVe century, his seat was first to Octodure, the current Martigny. The more former mention of diocese dates back to 381 where the octodure bishop participa to the aquilée council. This Théodore, more knew under the name of holy Théodule and known for the foundation of the worship of holy Maurice, that there assista.

It is only at LIFE century that the seat was moved to Sion, probably following Lombard incursions alongside the strategic road of the Big one-Holy-Bernard.

In 975, the Frankfurt Council creates the ecclesiastical province of Tarentaise understanding the dioceses of Moûtiers, of Sion and of aoste.

In 999, the bishop of Sion devint count of the Was worth. During the whole Middle Ages, it luttera to maintain his check facing the foreign threat (the Zähringen, then the Knowledge) and facing the emancipation desire of the notable valaisans (The The Tower, then the dizains represented by Light diet).

The Was worth, at the same time the remainder of the Burgundy kingdom, is integrated in 1032 to the Holy Roman Germanic Empire. To the profit of imperial immediacy, the bishop, as a count of the Was worth, becomes empire prince. It henceforth is known under the title of prince bishop.

During the Italy Wars, the cardinal Matthieu Schiner joua an important role in the mobilization of Swiss troops against France.

While since his creation, the diocese was subordinated to the diocese subway Coming, Matthieu Schiner obtint of the pope to depend directly Rome.
