List of Arabian Houses

This is a list of the major Houses, or tribes, of the Arabian Peninsula in the 20th century.

  • House of Saud, became dominant through an alliance with the Wahhabis. Now rules Saudi Arabia.
  • House of Hashim, evicted from Saudi Arabia in 1926 but moved to the north and controlled Iraq until 1958 and still controls Jordan.
  • House of Shammar one of the largest Arabian tribes. Based in the northeast, they battled the Sauds into the 1920s.
  • House of Subaie based in Hejaz and Najd traditionally they are allies of Sauds since the first Saudi State which established in the year 1750 until now.
  • House of Mutayyir close ally of the House of Shammar and met the same fate.
  • House of Harb based in the Hejaz are now only a minor power after being defeated by the Sauds and their allies.
  • House of Banu Khalid based in Al-Hasa were also defeated by the Sauds.
  • House of Al-Sheikh long a close ally of the Sauds, have risen along with them.
  • House of Sudayris traditionally the house from which the Sauds drew their wives. It has remained a close ally of the House of Saud.
  • House of Thunayyan the administrators and closest allies of the Ottoman Empire, they switched allegiances and are now close allies of the Sauds.
  • House of Rashid rulers of Ha'il, members of the House of Shammar tribe. Defeated by Ibn Saud in 1921.
  • House of Al-Falasi the Emirs of Dubai descend from this tribe.
  • House of Aal-Shihab An old and prominent shi'ite tribe which originate from Al-Hasa. Now spread out between the eastern part of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
  • House of Al-Mehairi A large and prominent arabian tribe in the UAE.
  • House of Al-Shamsi A large and prominent arabian tribe in the UAE.
