List of Apple IIGS games

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Following is a List of Apple IIGS games. While backwards compatible for running most Apple II games, the Apple IIGS had a native 16-bit mode with support for graphics, sound, and animation capabilities that far surpassed anything earlier Apple II's were capable of. Apple IIGS-specific game software had been written that took advantage of its advanced features; however, there were relatively few of these 16-bit titles in comparison to the wealth of gaming software that had been written for the classic 8-bit Apple II (it only had a 4 year run on the commercial gaming market, and was far less popular than its counterparts: the Amiga and Atari ST).

The machine was part of the 16-bit home computer gaming revolution of the mid to late '80s, competing directly with the Amiga and Atari ST. While it had vastly superior sound and music capabilities, along with exceptional graphics (comparable to the Amiga and even superior to the ST) it lacked any of the built-in co-processors and hardware sprites used for animation in those competing machines, and was further hindered by a slow microprocessor. Nevertheless, some surprisingly high quality games were produced, quite a few even outdoing the Amiga and Atari ST equvialent ports.

Games that originated on (or only produced for) the Apple IIGS are marked "[GS]".
