[edit] Francophone

After a 1990 Supreme Court decision, based on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms minority language rights provisions, Alberta set-up francophone school districts (and boards), to allow francophone communities (Public and Separate Catholic) to administer their own schools, and provide French language instruction, wherever numbers warrant.

  • Public Francophone (In areas where there is no Separate Catholic Francophone system, Catholic and Public (e.g. secular) instruction may be accommodated within the same board):
    • East Central Francophone Education Region No. 3
    • Greater North Central Francophone Education Region No. 2, based in Edmonton, serves larger area
    • Greater Southern Public Francophone Education Region No. 4, based in Calgary and serves larger area
    • Northwest Francophone Education Region No. 1
  • Separate Catholic Francophone:
    • Greater Southern Separate Catholic Francophone Education Region No. 4, based in Calgary and serves larger area

[edit] Charter

Charter schools are independent of district boards, with each having its own board, with similar powers to a district board, but limited to a single school.
