In the series pilot, Reverend Eric Camden and his family are introduced. Eric's wife, Annie is a stay-at-home mom raising their children. Matt is the oldest child who has picked up a habit of smoking and not being able to keep a job. Mary is the oldest daughter who likes to play basketball a lot and is having a craving for wanting to kiss a boy. Lucy is the middle child and is hoping to become a woman and getting her period very soon. Simon is the youngest son and is hoping to get a dog very soon, even though his parents already told him that he's too young. Ruthie is the youngest child and is a happy and adorable five-year-old. Also, Annie learns some devastating news when her parents come for a visit as her mother has leukemia.

Matt shocks his family when he reveals his secret--that he is very close friends with a teenage pregnant girl, Renee. Lucy gets a surprise with her secret crush on classmate Jimmy Moon. Also, Eric gets a surprise of his own when he discovers his shoes keep on disappearing while Matt's friend Renee finds some help from an unusual ally--Eric. Finally, Annie reveals the shocking truth to Matt about his grandmother having leukemia.

Annie continues to suffer through her mother's recent leukemia diagnosis. Annie then decides to go to Arizona to visit them and see what is going on with them. Meanwhile, Eric volunteers for a charity work, but he's unable to do it at the last minute. Matt then volunteers to do it, but his dating habits get him into trouble with the organization he is doing charity for. Also, Mary decides to call it a quits with Jeff while Lucy has her first real date with her classmate Jimmy Moon. Lastly, when Annie returns home with her parents, they decide to stay with her and the rest of the family so that they could spend some more time with them--which unfortunately will be the last for Annie's mom, Jenny.

Eric tries to counsel a young couple whose marital problems escalate during the post-funeral reception at the Camden home. Mary has second thoughts about breaking up with her boyfriend Jeff.

Eric and Annie do their best to help Morgan and his wife, Patricia, get through their marital problems while Ruthie and Lynn are having fun as five-year-olds.

Mary schemes to have the house all to herself when tricking all of her friends and family as to where she is going to be. While the family prepares for the church's Annual Halloween Carnival chaired by Annie, Eric has a bad attitude toward the whole holiday and discovers the real reason behind his hatred of Halloween while remembering a dramatic experience he had as an 11-year-old boy.

After Mary unexpectedly un-invites her family to watch her play basketball at an important game, the Camdens begin to make other plans for themselves. Lucy is angry with Mary because she invited Ashley--a popular girl in Lucy's school, to her game. Simon, Ruthie, and Happy get lost in town while pretending to be spies and following their mailman all over town. Lucy was supposed to to be babysitting them, but was instead entertaining herself and Ashley by talking on the phone with her boyfriend Jimmy Moon. Eric is faced with counseling a young boy who is once again back on his drug habit that is affecting his family.

The Camden's and the whole Glenn Oak community become gossipy and suspicious when Eric is caught going into a hotel with an attractive woman, who he is actually helping. The possibility of Eric having an extramarital affair is what the Camden children are assuming when they catch Eric escorting a woman to a hotel alone. Nevertheless, Annie struggles to give him the benefit of the doubt about his confidential church business. The whole entire Glen Oak Community buzzes with this gossip. Meanwhile, Simon endures the wrath of his classmates when his secret crush is discovered. He tries to con his way out of going to school, but learns from his family that embarrassment will be drawn away from him and on to someone else soon. Matt tries to keep things moving slow between Mary and her new boyfriend.

After Annie and Matt are carjacked, Matt fears leaving the house while Annie appears unusually normal. Eventually it hits Annie--especially after losing her wedding ring and knowing that her son could've been killed. Meanwhile, Lucy fears that her relationship with Jimmy Moon will suffer when they both decide to run for class president. In order for Mary to fit in with her basketball team friends, she thinks about getting a tattoo since the rest of the team is doing it.

Matt, Mary, and Lucy make plans to get away from the family for Thanksgiving, but when Eric's sister Julie comes to spend the holidays with them, plans are changed. Eric decides to help his little sister overcome her problem at home rather than seek professional help--whether she wants it or not. Annie is not comfortable with the situation and is only concerned that the children stay safe after an unfortunate altercation between Julie and Simon.

Simon tries to make himself invisible and tries to convince the whole family that he can be invisible.

To help preserve a woman's pride, Matt lies to his family and secretly helps old Mrs. Bink (Eileen Brennan) around her house. Eric becomes very concerned when Matt begins to miss church and is skipping school with Mary to help Mrs. Bink. Annie is calm about everything and knows that there is nothing bad happening and that there is a good reason behind all of this. Eric tries to help a homeless family by breaking things in his church so that they can work to make the money and keep them off the streets. Lucy is a little depressed over the lack of enthusiasm over her thirteenth birthday and her father won't let her have a boy/girl party. Lucy gets her wish by the end, and a little surprise when she finds out that her boyfriend's friend likes her. Happy finally delivers her puppies and the Camdens begin to sell them.

Mary tries to impress her basketball team by stealing a glass from their teen hangout "The Varsity", which is a school ritual. An upset Eric finds the glass and makes Matt return it but gets arrested when the store manager doesn't accept his apology for stealing it--which makes Mary feel guilty. Lucy has a paper due and hasn't started it, so she takes one of Mary's old papers and puts her name on it. Eventually, she starts to feel guilty and admits to cheating. Simon and Ruthie overhear their father talking about how it bothers him when people in America don't know the National Anthem. Ruthie then is afraid because she doesn't know it and asks Simon for help.

All three Camden generations dread the annual visit of Eric's parent's, "The Colonel" (John Camden) and Grandma Ruth Camden. The tension between father and son is heightened when both Eric and "The Colonel" want to adopt a homeless and orphaned 10-year-old boy, George. George had run away from the orphanage he was staying at and was hiding inside Eric's church. Eric openly voices his disdain over his parents' nurturing skills. Annie discovers the fate of her lost wedding rings when seeing them on a woman at the store.

While both couples, Annie and Eric, Patricia and Morgan Hamilton, spend a romantic Valentine's Day camping, Matt is left in charge of the rest of the family and allows chaos to rein in the Camden household. His preoccupation with his date and Mary's party allows the dog, Happy. to slip out of the house in search of her puppies. When a car hits Happy, the family holds a vigil, aided by a caring veterinarian. Simon blames Matt for the accident. Lucy is enjoying her first Valentine's Day with her boyfriend Jimmy Moon.

Ruthie and Simon come along and find it. They secretly buy ferrets and try to hide them from everyone else in the family.

24	See You In September	September 22, 1997	All of the kids go to school. However, every one of them has a terrible, first day.
25	I Love You	September 29, 1997	Simon and Ruthie keep sneaking around in Matt's letters, Matt sets up a letter for them to read, however, his father reads it instead.
26	Who Knew?	October 6, 1997	Eric finds a joint in Happy's mouth and is convinced that it came from Matt. Annie reveals that she tried marijuana before.
27	Says Who?	October 13, 1997	Simon tries to convince Ruthie that he is shrinking, however, Matt overhears and plays with Simon's mind until Simon believes he really is shrinking. Lucy invites a girl over hoping to learn the truth about her and the rumors of bulimia.
28	Breaking Up Is Hard To Do	October 20, 1997	Matt receives a Dear John letter from Heather and in turn, borrows money from all the Camden kids and buys a plane ticket to see her. Mary and Wilson split up.
29	Girls Just Want To Have Fun	November 3, 1997	Lucy goes to the mall with some friends and pretends she is older. Simon is keeping a secret his friend told him about his sister being in a gang. Eric tries to counsel the family.
30	Do Something	November 10, 1997	Annie decides that she wants to be a muffin baker, al the while teaching Mary and Lucy a lesson about how hard it is to be a mom. Matt becomes a friend to a boy with a terminal illness.
31	I Hate You	November 17, 1997	Mary,Lucy, and Ruthie learn that words can hurt people easily. Simon works on a school project and becomes friends with a Holocaust survivor and asks her to share her story because some people don't believe there ever was a Holocaust.
32	Truth Or Dare	November 24, 1997	Eric gets frustrated at not being able to fit into an old pair of pants. Mary is offended when she realizes that Matt paid someone to go out with her.
33	Lead, Follow, Or Get Out Of The Way	January 12, 1998	Lucy is failing American history, and the house is in chaos. "The Colonel" rushes in and restores the house to its original chaos.
34	Rush To Judgement	January 19, 1998	Annie and Eric find out that there is over $2500 missing from the church funds. Lucy sees Coach Koper and Mary in what she believes to be improper behavior.
35	Stuck In the Middle With You	January 26, 1998	Jimmy Moon and Rod are vying for Lucy's affections. Eric and Annie get into an argument about grave plots during a marrige counseling group.
36	Red Tape	February 2, 1998	A mysterious ad in the school newspaper gives Matt more attention than he needs. Eric becomes interested in the life of a very polite young boy, whose mother's having financial difficulties.
37	Homecoming	February 9, 1998	Mary is afriad that she will fall down on the basketball court at the big game. Ruthie is afraid she will be left behind during her school field trip to the museum.
38	It Takes A Village	February 23, 1998	Simon and Nigel are invited to the home of a girl who is famous for her "make-out parties". Keisha asks Lucy to do her a favor and ask for permission to go to a movie with her, so she can secretly meet her boyfriend. Keisha also says her boyfriend will bring along someone for her. However, that becomes a disaster when Annie shows up at the same movie.
39	Nothing Endures But Change	March 2, 1998	Lucy feels she is to blame when her friend dies in a deadly car accident. Simon tries to escape Ruthie, by moving into the attic but realizes it is too scary.
40	My Kinda Guy	April 6, 1998	A French foreign exchange student arrives unexpectantly in the Camden's house. He annoys everyone in the family and leaves a pack of cigarettes out and Simon and Ruthie smoke them.
41	Time to Leave the Nest	April 20, 1998	Matt wants to atend an out-of-state college. Simon finds a dirty little girl and brings her home. Finally they find the girl's father, who is an alcoholic, and try to counsel them.
42	Like a Harlot	April 27, 1998	Mary and Lucy accept blind dates from a set of twins in Simon's class. Eric asks Matt to take the girl with the reputation of being the "high school harlot" Ruthie learns the truth about her favorite costumed character, and thus questions whether God really exists.
43	Boyfriends..., Part 1	May 4, 1998	Simon trains Happy for a dog food commercial. Jimmy and Rod follow Eric around for a school project. Matt creates friction with Mary and Wilson, when he sees them sleeping together. Wilson sets up a blind date for Lucy. Annie receives a phone call from the doctor that Mary is pregnant. A little girl believes that happy is her dog and demands her back.
44	...And Girlfriends, Part 2	May 11, 1998	Mary flatly states that she is not pregnant. Happy goes away to live with the girl, but becomes depressed and eventually winds up back at home. "The Colonel" and Ruth arrive for the graduation, but then learn that Matt is not planning to atend. Annie's father and Ginger also show up for the graduation. Meanwhile, they have to occupy Annie and Eric, so they tell them they are getting married. Matt is class valedictorian, however he has a job lined up in Wachington D.C. that starts before his graduation. Annie and Eric reveal that the doctor mixed up the tests. Annie is pregnant. Annie's father and Ginger decide they liked the idea of being married, so they really are going to marry.

Elsewhere, Annie is shocked when she finds a pack of cigarettes in Simon's bedroom. Lastly, Ruthie's friend Peter begs her to lie and not tell his mother that he smokes.

On Valentine's Day, Rose decides to tell Simon that she does not want to get married in a church, which leaves Simon frustrated and befuddled. Meanwhile, Kevin organizes a Valentine's Day dinner at the same hotel where he and Lucy got engaged three years ago. Kevin invites Eric, Annie, Simon and Rose to join them, but neglects to tell Lucy about the arranged setting. Lucy shows up in a sexy outfit and is shocked to see that her family is there, leaving her embarrassed. Lastly, Ruthie volunteers to help an elderly neighbor who has spent her life pining away for a particular man that got away. This inevitably causes Ruthie to evaluate her obsession with Martin.

Lucy's life gets more complicated personally and professionally when both are intertwined with big news. Lucy begins to feel the presence of her late Grandma Jenny visiting her and warning her of the challenges that are coming in her life soon. At the same time, Lucy secretly goes to see a doctor to find out if she is pregnant, and decides not to attend an important church meeting where she is an attendee. Meanwhile, Annie and Ruthie decide to take a day off together to unwind. Unfortunately, mother and daughter accidentally run into one of Ruthie's teachers. Ruthie's teacher gives Annie a lecture on her parenting in this situation. Rose is still angry that Simon neglected to tell her that he slept with Sandy. Lastly, Eric unintentionally shakes things up between Rose and Simon.

Having lost her pregnancy over the summer, an emotionally unstable Lucy convinces Eric to let her deliver the Sunday sermon, but she ends up publicly blaming Kevin and everyone in her family for what happened. Meanwhile, Martin expresses his romantic intentions to Sandy, who may still have feelings for Simon, and tells her that he wants to spend more time with her and their infant son. Sandy reveals that she has recently switched majors and wants to become a minister, a prospect that upsets Lucy who feels like Sandy is intruding on her turf. Jewel makes a cameo as the Camden's neighbor whose voice lulls Savannah to sleep every night.

Kevin advises Martin to get Sandy's attention by cooking for her and expressing an interest in her studies, but Martin uses the technique to try and sleep with Sandy again, which, of course, only serves to push her further away when she discovers the truth. Still avoiding her family, Lucy tells Kevin she's out apologizing to members of the congregation for her recent strange behavior, but she's actually going to the movies and spending time with a teenage ticket seller, T-Bone who has taken a romantic interest in Lucy.
