LIRC

LIRC (Linux Infrared Remote Control) is an open source package that allows you to receive and send infrared signals with your Linux computer system. There is a Microsoft Windows equivalent of LIRC called WinLIRC.

With LIRC and an IR receiver you can control your computer with almost any remote control (e.g. your TV remote control. You may for instance control DVD playback or music with your remote control.
