Lipowitz's Alloy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lipowitz's Alloy or "Lipowitz Metal" is one of the low-melting point fusible alloys.
Commercially known as Cerrobend, its composition is given as
Sn 13.3% Bi 50% Pb 26.7% Cd 10%,
and its melting point range as 70 to 73 °C.
Because of its heavy metal composition contact with the bare skin is thought to be harmful, especially in the molten state. Vapour from cadmium-containing alloys is also known to pose a danger to humans. Cadmium poisoning carries the risk of respiratory, liver, kidney, and bone damage, loss of the sense of smell, and cancer.
