[edit] Statement of NPP Philosophy

My fairly robust feelings of deletionism are tempered by an equally strong tendency toward feeling sympathy for the newbie. The latter applies mainly to newbie contributors/editors, but to a lesser degree applies to new pages as well.

With this in mind, I am considering a somewhat idiosyncratic approach to the New Page Patrol:

The words new page and notability should seldom be mentioned in the same breath.

I have no objection to {{db-nonsense}} and few to {{db-blank}}. Pages that assert that "My History teachr Drulz" should be deleted immediately if not sooner, and even newbies should realize that a blank or nearly-blank page may be deleted. Two or three coherent sentences that are not personal attacks is a step in the right direction, but still could potentially be tagged {{db-nonsense}} if they make nothing at all even vaguely resembling assertion of notability.

Beyond this, however, I suggest that a four-step approach be taken toward articles of questionable notability:

  1. They should be tagged with one or more of these or related templates:
{{unsourced}}
{{wikify|October 2006}}
{{cleanup|October 2006}}
  1. A brief message should be left on the originating author's (or the article's) talk page.
  2. The article should be added to the New Page Patroller's Watch List.
  3. The article should be allowed a fixed period of time to at least show signs of a developmental process leading towards maturity. A curtain of grace should be lowered over fledgling efforts, at least for that period of time,.
  4. Crucially, after that period of time has elapsed, the New Page Patroller should make some decision about whether to tag the article AfD.

#2 above is why I created asecondary account. I think each page deserves some measure of attention, and does not deserve to be lost on my watchlist. Moreover, the contribs of a dedicated second account provides an automagic system of keeping track of how long I've been herding cats watching any given page

So when does an article reach the Age of Accountability? The answer is somewhat arbitrary, but at present I have settled upon two months.

What message should be left for the originating author? [This answer subject to ongoing revision]:

Hi, I've noticed that the article xxx that you created on xx/xx/xx is rather brief, and has been tagged {{unsourced}} {{wikify|October 2006}} {{cleanup|October 2006}}. If you need some help with the article, I can point you in the direction of pages that offer guidance, and perhaps I can offer you a few tips myself. You should know that all pages in Wikipedia are eligible for deletion at any time, and failing to improve your article may make it more likely that it will be deleted. But improving it steadily adds value to Wikipedia. Feel free to leave me a message if you have questions. --~~~~
