Lincoln Airport (IATA: LNK, ICAO: KLNK), formerly known as Lincoln Municipal Airport, is a public airport located four miles (6 km) northwest of the city of Lincoln in Lancaster County, Nebraska, USA. It is the second-largest airport in the state of Nebraska, serving the Lincoln metropolitan area and much of southeastern Nebraska.
The airport is located approximately four miles (6.4 km) northwest of downtown Lincoln, on land immediately north and west of Interstate 80. During World War II, the field was renamed Lincoln Army Air Field and used for mechanics and flight-crew training. It remained open until December 1945 when it was closed and transferred back to the City of Lincoln. In 1952 the site was re-opened as Lincoln Air Force Base. The main runway (18/36) is unusually large due to the fact that the base operated the B-47 Stratojet, a medium jet bomber which needed long runways to take-off and land. The diagonal runway (14/32) contains remnants of an alert apron used as a rapid launch platform for the bombers. After operating as a Strategic Air Command bomber and missile base, the U.S. Air Force closed the installation in 1966.
A portion of the airport is now home to the Nebraska Air National Guard's 155th Air Refueling Wing and several Army National Guard units, both of which are located just East of runway 36, right along side taxiway Delta. The Air National Guard's tarmac is closed to general aviation, and is guarded by Air Force Security Forces 24 hours a day.
The long landing strip is now designated as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle, though it has never been used in this way. Duncan Aviation also works out of this airport.
As of 2006, all regularly-scheduled flights from Lincoln Airport terminate within the United States.
