Like clockwork
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like Clockwork is a pop/rock project fronted by Jesse Owen Astin. The project began when Jesse started writing and recording his own songs in his basement at the age of 17. He released one EP and two full-length records through his label, Complacent Records. The first EP was a very basic collection of 7 songs entitled "The Testing EP". This EP was only available online through mp3.com, and sold very few copies during the short time it was available. Astin released his first full-length record entitled "Kill The Word" in 2002. "Kill The Word" was described as a collection of songs that had been completed, rather than a conceptual "album", containing mostly rough sketches of songs mostly acoustic-based. However a year later in 2003, Like Clockwork would release the intense concept album "A Cross In The Ground". "A Cross In The Ground" received many great reviews from e-zines, websites and other publications, giving Like Clockwork a stronger validation in the music scene. "A Cross In The Ground" was mostly given away for free via the official Like Clockwork website, and didn't get pressed until 2006, and is now availabe on cdbaby and iTunes.
Since Like Clockwork started off as a solo project in which Jesse would perform all instruments, these first two records embodied a strong electronic presence, using drum machines and other virtual instruments to paint very vivid sonic landscapes. On both records, the production style is very unique, often times orchestral, and full of hidden impulses and musical surprises.
