Ligon Middle School

Ligon Middle School is a middle school located in a low-income neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina. Thus it includes a high population of underpriveleged children, the brunt of whom are African American and Hispanic in nature. [1] The school was named as a School of Excellence at the 2006 Magnet Schools of America conference.[2] In 2001, the school won the Points of Light Foundation's National Service/Learning Leader School Award.[3]
As of 2006, the school principal is Mr. Scott Richard Lyons, who has been with Ligon since 2004. Average annual attendance is 950 students, in contrast to the district average of 850 and state average of 600. [4]
Their motto is "Academics + Arts = Achievements" and the school mascot is Little Blue. [5]
