Lights Out (puzzle)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lights out, also known as Fiver, is a one player puzzle that is played on a m by n grid of squares in which every square has two states: on and off. The game usually starts off with all squares off, where the goal is to turn on every square. By selecting a square, itself and all the surrounding squares' (up, down, left, right) state is turned toggled. For example, on a 3 by 3 grid of squares with all squares off, if the center one is selected, it will turn "on" and so will 4 other squares.

[edit] Solutions to square Light's Out puzzles
Here are the minimum squares that must be pressed to achieve all on from all off (they need only to be selected once):
Select the 0's 1x1 0 2x2 00 00 3x3 0-0 -0- 0-0 4x4 -0-- ---0 0--- --0- 5x5 00--- 00-00 --000 -000- -00-0 6x6 0-00-0 -0000- 000000 000000 -0000- 0-00-0
[edit] Variations and generalizations
The game can also be played where the starting and goal positions are not all off or all on. Some variations also have it where when you select a square on the left edge, squares on the right edge are changed, too as in many games. Some of the generalizations that are drastically different are invreasing te number of states and expanding into higher dimensions.
The shape needn't even be a square as seen in this version.
[edit] Places where the theme is used
- In one of the later levels of the point-and-click game Mystery of Time and Space (known as the green wall)
- In a game called RayRay
[edit] Places to play Lights Out
Tiger Toys has made such a toy in which buttons are pressed in order to select them. The buttons will light up when their state is "on".
The game can also be played, where it is known as Fiver, here and here.
