Lightfromadeadstar's sound, at its most basic, may be categorized as electronic rock. The group claims influences from pioneering electronic acts such as New Order, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails. They also draw heavily from The Cure as well as shoegaze (Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine) and trip hop (Massive Attack, Portishead).

Unlike their synth rock contemporary counterparts, The Killers, Lightfromadeadstar focuses on evoking a darker, emotional atmosphere rather than relying on danceable pop sensibilities.

[edit] History

The material currently released by Lightfromadeadstar centers around the writing and recording talents of Adrien McCarthy, the sole founding member of the group. McCarthy, having worked with various incarnations of the group since as early as 1999, put the project on hold to record the soundtrack for the film, The Love Song of Henry Milk, for which he subsequently won an award at the Sundance Film Festival. In search of musicians to complete the lineup and restart, McCarthy connected with guitarist David Ley through an ad placed on Craigslist who in turn recruited Ben Phelps for duty on drums. Both Ley and Phelps had experience playing on the New York underground rock scene: Ley as frontman for progressive hard rock outfit, Torpor, and Phelps as drummer for How the Hell She Died. Will McCutcheon, who performs IDM under the moniker of Mekagojira, joined Lightfromadeadstar to handle keyboards and samples.

Lightfromadeadstar's full length debut, The Missing, was independently released in September of 2004. The album enjoyed a sharp spike in sales when it was featured on the front page of the iTunes Music Store in March of 2005 at which point it climbed the site's Electronic Music Downloads Chart to a peak position at #3.
