Light Grenades is the sixth album by Incubus, released on November 28, 2006. It consists of 13 songs. The first single, "Anna-Molly", was released through Sony on September 20 for one day. The album sold 229,000 copies during its first week of release worldwide.

Incubus' guitarist, Mike Einziger told MTV "It sounds like 13 different bands playing 13 different songs..." He noted that several tracks sound nothing like Incubus' previous material, such as the tune "Dig", which was supposed to be an R&B song, "but we ended up making it slightly more rock, because it got to a point where I thought it didn't sound like us at all," he said. "Every time we're about to start making a new album, I tell myself, 'okay, this one's going to be cohesive,' and it never happens."

"Earth to Bella" and "Love Hurts" were performed live in front of an audience at Make Some Noise on April 29, 2006.

"A Kiss to Send Us Off" and "Anna-Molly" were performed at VH1's Decades Rock: Live Tribute to the Pretenders on August 11, 2006, which aired on VH1 Classic on October 20, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. EST. However, they were not featured in the program. The two songs were also performed at Edgefest 2006 on September 30 at Tempe Beach Park, Arizona.

A song called "Punch Drunk" was originally announced as a song recorded during the Light Grenades Sessions but it will only be available as a bonus track on the Japanese edition.

In mid October, Incubus released a music video for the first single off of Light Grenades "Anna Molly", which was directed by Jamie Thraves (Coldplay, Radiohead) Filming was done in late September. Also, the first leg of the band's 2007 North-American tour, will visit smaller venues in close to two dozen cities over two months, with two or more shows on consecutive nights in some of the largest cities. International dates are to follow.

30-second samples of each track on the album are available on the Sony Music Store.

In a recent interview with Kerrang! magazine Brandon Boyd addressed some interesting facts about Incubus' new album:

Brandon on success: "On a bad day, I'll be like, 'Yeah, we're probably not relevant any more, whatever. We had a nice run, thank you, how the hell am I going to pay the mortgage now?'," Boyd grins." Most other days though, I think if anybody likes it then it's a success. In all honesty, the realist in me knows the likelihood of us having a sixth album that did really well on a large scale is astronomically low, and I'm okay with that.

Brandon on Paper Shoes: "There's a song called "Paper Shoes" where Michael and I mic'd our bodies with ambient mics and did the percussion tracks pounding on our chests and skulls. The galloping rhythm is us pounding on our chests. It was really funny. We were trying so hard not to laugh because we were sitting there like cavemen beating our chests!"

Brandon on what inspired the album's title Light Grenades: "There's a song called that on the record and it felt like the most pertinent conceptual aspect of the album, the idea of throwing ideas at problems and the ideas explode with light and good results and intention on consciousness," Boyd muses. "So I started imagining imagery of students in different countries protesting and throwing Molotov cocktails with masks over their faces. But there's one brave student who runs up to the police line and, as opposed to throwing rocks or things that destroy, there's this concept of that one courageous, lonely student running up and throwing ideas and having them actually change things. It just seemed kind of a cool concept-the redefining of weaponry."

In Billboard magazine the album set the biggest drop from #1 in history. From #1 to #37. The previously last album that the biggest drop from #1 was Marilyn Manson's The Golden Age of Grotesque. Fell from #1 to #21 back in 2003

[edit] Singles

  • "Anna-Molly" - was briefly available online on September 20. It was slated for release on October 16, and debuted at #19 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. As of December 8, 2006, Anna Molly stands at #2 on the Modern Rock Chart, at #7 on the Mainstream Rock Chart and at #66 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • "Dig" and "Love Hurts" are rumored to be the next singles off the album due to the promotional sticker on the album, with "Dig" already confirmed as the next single by band manager Steve Rennie. Officially, the video for this new single will be fan directed. The synopsis was presented as follows:

"Here's what we are after. Incubus is looking for a great video for their upcoming single "Dig". The band has witnessed the explosion of user generated content on the web and are excited to see how fans are finding new ways to interact with their favorite artists. They've seen how many of their fans are using their own resources and imagination to create their own videos. And frankly they are bored with the idea of making videos in the typical music industry fashion. This time they are looking to do something outside the normal channels of video making. This video is "DIG" any way you want it.

"Here's how it will work. Incubus has shot performance footage to the new single, "Dig" from their new album "Light Grenades". The performance was shot on 6 cameras against green screen. Footage is posted here in hi and lo res. The director/team can download performance footage and other digital assets and then make your own video. You will be required to sign the release by checking the box below which give up all rights to the video in perpetuity. From there it’s all yours.

"In the typical industry modus operandi, we would pick a single, solicit treatments, decide on a director, then hire a company to make the video. From start to finish the process could take 2-4 weeks before a video spits out the other end. You won't get much longer than that either. The machine waits for nobody. Deadline for submissions will be January 15th.

"We don't want to see your treatment. We're not going to give you any budget. We're not going to give you anything but the song and the band performance footage if you want it. The band footage does not even need to be in the video. You will not need our approvals for anything.

"The search is going to be wide. We'll target Incubus fan sites as well as Film Schools and Film related chatboards. In a perfect world the biggest Incubus fan in the world would also be a Stephen Spielberg in waiting. But its not a requirement. This project will take not only love and passion but will obviously require some technical skills as well. It does not matter if a team or an individual working on his or her own does the video. The only thing that matters is that it be great! Good luck!"
