Lifestream is a fictional force from the Final Fantasy videogame/movie universe that inhabits and regulates life on all planets. The Lifestream is presented as a universal source of life (much like Star Wars the Force) that regulates the flow of life on planets throughout the universe. Its physical appearance shows it as millions of blue-green strings that move like in water.

[edit] History on Earth

The Lifestream has existed for eons on every planet that has life. This universal force of life monitors and regulates the flow of life on all worlds. On the planet Earth, the Lifestream along with the Planet, was worshipped by a planetspread people known as the Cetra (Ancients) who was deeply connected to the planet and the Lifestream. When the Abomination that Heaven sent, Jenova, a vile and evil creature that wanted to eradicate all life on the planet, Jenova used her telepathic powers to gain advantages over the Cetra and eventually turn almost all of them to vicious monsters. However, a small group of the Cetra fought against Jenova and managed to seal her away beneath the earth for many, many years to come.

Though the Cetra was victorious, many of them left their nomadic tribes and settled larger cities. These became the first humans who lost all of their connection to the Earth and the Lifestream. All life that ends goes back into the Lifestream bringing with it its memories, emotions and experiences. Thus Lifestream consists of countless lives of the dead.

Aerith was the last known Cetra and she died at the hands of the ex-SOLDIER Sephiroth after summoning Holy, a mighty defensive force that could counter Meteor, the ultimate destructive force that Sephiroth had summoned.

After her death, she became part of the Lifestream as all things do when they die but her Cetra heritage allowed her to "exist" within the Lifestream as a spiritual guide to Cloud Strife and their friends.

The Lifestream in itself is neither good or evil, though Sephiroth plans to use it for his evil purposes, but a force of life in all its many forms. If spending too long time within the Lifestream, as Cloud Strife did, terrible things can happen to your mind. As the thousands of lives and memories that runs through you every moment, your own personality is compromised and could be severely damaged. Sephiroth managed to keep his personality through his strong will and powers as well as the enhanced mental abilities his origin as a genetic experiment bestowed.

Omega WEAPON was designed to absorb the Lifestream into itself when the Planet sensed that its end was near. Using Chaos to return all life to the Lifestream, Omega Weapon would then ascend into space, transplanting the Lifestream to a new planet.

Sephiroth returned after his first defeat, again in a plot involving the Lifestream. When enough people died of Geostigma (a disease brought on by the presence of alien matter in the body), the Lifestream would absorb their remains, thus tainting it, and allowing Sephiroth to use the Planet as a vehicle to travel and infect other worlds.
